The MTR5B is a Steve Weber design produced by LNR Precision in the USA. It’s a 5 band QRP CW only transceiver designed for SOTA and portable light weight operating.

Your irises will contract anyway when you focus to read the display as part of your 'accommodation reflex', so that's not the reason why the bright blue border makes the display hard to read. Blue is shortwave light, which scatters in the eye much more than longer wavelength green and red, and that has the effect of reducing contrast, making it hard to read. One effective solution is to use a green, amber or even red back-light. But yeah, the black tape will work fine too.

Kanga no longer carries the MTR5b radios. That's a pity. I would love to see the guide they produced if you still have a copy. I might have located an unbuilt kit. Great video, by the way! :)

The original build manual is still available from LNR Precision. Go to www.lnrprecision.com/manuals/ and select ‘MTR5B original detail manual’. I think Kanga has had problems getting stock from LNR and as I look (December 2020) LNR have no stock of any of the MTRs :o(

"Do not use more than 12 volts." You mean, such as almost any "12v" source, such as a vehicle, battery pack, almost anything. That's a very poor design flaw; utterly horrific. "12v" ham gear needs to run from a vehicle, small lead acid battery. A reasonable upper limit might be at least 15 volts.

You’ll be pleased to know that LNR Precisions only current offering in the Mountain Topper range (MTR4B v2) supports 5.5 - 13V. Still no good on a running car alternator or standard shack PSU but more tolerant of 3S LiPo battery packs and good for a simple PP3 9V battery.
