A trek to Lo Manthang, Mustang, Nepal via Nar and the Teri La: 6-28/10/18. After a bus ride from Kathmandu to Jagat we followed the busy Annapurna Circuit for 2 days to Koto. We turned turned off into the less frequented Nar Phu area, staying two nights in the village of Nar. Crossing the 5595m Teri La into Mustang, we stopped at Tangge before finally reaching the walled city of Lo Manthang on the 14th day of walking. To return we took 4x4 cars for two days down to Jomsom, then the scenic mountain flights back to Kathmandu via Pokhara.
Views of the Himalayan mountains, including some of the 8000m peaks, stunning panoramas across the multi-coloured rock formations of Mustang, old mountain villages, and glimpses of the flora and fauna along the way.
The trip was booked through KE Adventure Travel in the UK, using Thamserku as the ground agents in Nepal.

Amazing photography and beautiful places. I was born and raised in Nepal but I never knew this amazing region called Upper Mustang/ Lo Manthang existed until recently and that it was a part our beautiful country. The road accessibility has really put this place on the map. It has promoted domestic tourism, and improved the livelihood of those that live there. It has also allowed people to appreciate how beautiful our country really is. This place no doubt is on the top of my list of places to visit, the next time I make a trip to Nepal.

My heartiest congratulations toMr.Stephen and his team mate for taking us with them through various ravains and terrains streaching over ridges and valleys on to Nur and Terri La to the villages of upper Himalayan people. I bow to those who dare to live there at such a remote corner. I thank the photographer for his fantastic photography of murvellous landscape of Great Himalayas .Now on 77, I still posses an urge to follow their foot steps to the heaven on Earth .

Your trekks and cinematography are superb. Real fan. Notwithstanding, your super British mumble accent makes me wondering that I'm totally lost. I get a word or two. Perhaps makes more subtitles remarks are they to spread your thoughts and remarks for people with different kinds of English. Just waiting for another adventure. I'm from Brasil, Rio de Janeiro City /Copacabana. I recommend in South America as the top trek possible The Roirama Mountain - the Avatar floating rocks inspiration,although it's a mountanner journey, not for trekkers. Peru, Bolívia and Colômbia maybe it's your thing. Pumapunku it's the holy grail for unleash unprecedented awesome facts about the history of human civilization.

Thanks for the suggestions on places to go. I've been to Peru in 2004 (Salcantay and Machu Picchu then Ausangate circuit) and Roraima from Venezuela side in 2008. This was before I started doing video and the still photos were on an earlier digital camera and not as good quality as these days. If you are interested you can see the photos from all my trips (recent ones where there was also video and earlier ones when I took only stills) on my web site - with lots of commentary in text form!: www.stephenslater.me.uk Currently planning where to go this year, so will bear your suggestions in mind.

Well done trekking at up to and over 5000 meters takes a lot of effort. This brought back fond memories I did the first trek into Mustang from Pohkera in 1991 walking all the way no roads. You did a really committed route and lost the Thorong La traffic. I was in Narphu in 1996 and again in 1999 it was really remote then. I trekked on my own with porters but bad weather prevented getting over the high passes. A road all the way to Lo Manthang, thats progress I suppose but back then we had the villagers out just staring at us, it did feel very remote and special. Thanks it brought back some great memories.

I applaud you all for trekking through rough terrain, not an easy task for sure. Takes alot of stamina and endurance to get through hours of walking, I'm sure my legs would have felt like rubber bands at the end of the day.😂 talk about a cardio workout I bet in a months time of doing this I'd be fit as a fiddle lol. Bravo on all your videos! Yes, I watched them all!😆 just curious how much a one month stay trekking different sites would cost for one person including transportation, food n lodge? Also what type of camera are you using? Thank you Stephan, I throughly enjoyed the sights n sounds. Mother nature never disapoints. Namaste 🗻🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️✌🙏👏

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed my videos. To see current prices for doing treks yourself, I suggest you look at the web sites of trekking companies - I generally use KE Adventure, Exodus or Explore. I'm using a Sony A77 camera with a single Tamron 16-300mm zoom lens. I like the electronic viewfinder with interchangeable lenses, but then on trek it's a trade off of quality against weight. And the GPS geotagging is useful to know where I was and check which peaks I can see from there on Google maps.

I thought that was a female voice, but I think a post video audio would have better content and sound, which was horrible. I could only make out about 30% of what was said. I believe it had more to do with the poor quality microphone than the wind. Anyway, I was amazed at the stamina of the older hikers, I hope the fellow that had to drop out is OK. At least that is what I thought happened, again, the audio was bad. The Mustang area appeared volcanic in origin and reminded me of the geology in Death Valley, Ca. USA. Beautiful video presentation and I appreciated keying on the high peaks of the Himalayas. I was disappointed seeing how filthy Kathmandu was, the people seem to use the river as a toilet for plastic and anything else they throw away. Eventually, that crap makes it to the ocean. I had the impression the culture respected nature, nature was pristine, the humans are making every effort to destroy it.

@stephen.t.slater 4 года назад
I apologise for showing a limited and negative view of Kathmandu. I acknowledge that there are many more beautiful things to see including the old areas around Durbar Square, the many Hindu temples, Buddhist stupas etc. This was my ninth trip to Nepal starting and ending in Kathmandu, and between these I had been several times on the guided tours of Durbar Squar, to watch the cremations at Pashupatinath, to make circuits around Boudhnath, to climb the steps to the "Monkey" temple and look out across the rooftops, to explore the shops in Thamel and so on. I have shown these in some of my other videos. On this occasion, I just felt I wanted to do something a bit dfferent and discover something new, so I though I'd take a walk along the river and see what I saw. So what is in this video is my personal experience of what I found on this particular trip. And while the river was used as a ribbush tip, I also saw and remember all the people going about their daily lives in different ways along the river, the birds and flowers still thriving there, and how the structure of the streets branched away from the river and its bridges. Please tell me what I can go and see in Kathmandu that is different on my tenth visit.

I must say, very beautiful videography, journey, destination, and local people. I would like to ask, did you hire any helper to carry your stuff along the journey or you booked a trekking package, or do you recommend any good guide? how safe to travel alone and the best time to visit this heaven?
@stephen.t.slater
@stephen.t.slater 3 года назад
The shots in the video of the mule train and the porters hauling huge piles of gear - those were the helpers hired to carry our stuff. It was a package booked with KE Adventure. There are some easier trails in Nepal that I believe a few people do alone, where there are lots of other people about if you need help. For this one, even travelling in a group experienced at remote high-altitude treks, how would we have organised the rescue helicopter or found a way round when the route was blocked by the landslide etc travelling alone? Nepal trekking is best in the autumn for clearer views or in the spring for more intermittent views but with all the rhododendron bushes in bloom. In summer it is too hot low down with monsoon rains, while in winter the routes can be blocked by deep snow.

It's the leeward side. The Annapurna range blocks all the moisture on the southern slope and this circuit, Kagbeni valley and Lo Manthang area (Mustang) lie in the rain shadow on the northern face. There is occasional snow that will fill up the place in winters, which then only lasts till about late May. Same with Spiti valley and Ladakh valley. Good snowfall only in the winters. But yes, climate change has drastically reduced snowfall and snow days.
