It's neat and simple until you're trying to do this with 500 other people in a line while getting shot at by other people at fairly close range, and you're all dirty and there's acrid smoke in the air and people are dying and screaming and it's just awful.

@@koriko88 It wasn't at fairly close range though, it was at 100-200 yards. Every few minutes one bullet out of 100 would hit. Battles took FOREVER. The thing you see in movies where one close-range volley kills the entire first rank didn't happen 99.9% of the time, same with bayonet charges.

Muskets are smoothboard. Rifle are rifled and what makes modern day guns accurate. The word carbine originate from Italy, where a special unit in the military existed that had the word carbine in it. Carbine are just shortened muskets Flintlock refers to the firing mechanism, where a flint and a hard surface like the cover of the pan ignites the gunpowder with friction. Pistol, specially made shortened smoothboard muskets. Blunderbuss is a special musket that fires a handful of balls at the target. This is often used by the navy. Basically it is a musket shotgun.

Did you know that there was a war because of those paper container? Not because of the paper but something in those paper cartridge. I completely forgot the details but apparently they used fat on those papers possibly for sealing it, idk. And a war broke down after the muslims found out that they've been sold a version of those cartridges that uses pig fat. Imagine that. EDIT* So i looked into it and i think it was the indian rebellion of 1857. I would like to correct myself - So, apparently its not really just the muslims but hindus as well. And they also used the fat NOT for sealing the paper but to keep it dry. Point is, those paper have either beef or pig fat in them and it triggered a rebellion because the practice was to bite them. pork being seen as unclean by the muslims and beef fat which came from err ...cows. which are sacred to the hindus. Now, some say its just a rumor. Some say it's the final stick that triggered the entire rebellion. But the idea that a conflict could start from something so simple is crazy. dont you think?

I saw some interesting questions about the possibility of heat/embers in the barrel possibly igniting the powder prematurely. I don't know for sure, but I think this is the reason he loads the pan first, then the muzzle. Since its possible embers/heat might ignite in the barrel, thus potentially blowing your fingers off, by loading the pan first, you ensure they would ignite when at least your hand isn't directly in front of the barrel. This would be especially a problem if instead of a wrapped bullet, you used a powder horn like this guy -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-insxddY6ZmE.html
@cykeok3525
@cykeok3525 2 года назад
It all fortunately works toward the same end, but the reason why the powder is poured into the flash pan first when using a paper cartridge is because.. it pretty much has to. After you open the paper cartridge, you have to fill the pan before you upright the weapon to pour powder down the muzzle, because right after that you'd ram the ball and wadding down. If you hadn't filled the pan as the first step, once the whole cartridge has already gone down the barrel, you would have to fill the pan with powder from another source (such as a hip pouch or flask), which defeats the speed advantage of a paper cartridge in the first place. As you mentioned, I suppose it also neatly confers the advantage of ensuring there's more than enough time for any embers to burn out during the time it would take to tear the cartridge open, fill the pan, close the frizzen, and reposition the weapon upright which would all be done before any powder goes down the muzzle. Finally, only after all that, the rest of the cartridge including the ball goes in (which is the point when a misfire would become dangerous).

Do muskets have a big kick/recoil when you fire?
@billmelater6470
@billmelater6470 2 года назад
Depends on projectile weight and powder charge. Now, my .54 round ball rifles with an 80gr charge, not nothing, but not much either. Now, a .715-.75 round ball off of a ~100gr charge like from a Bess? Going to kick a bit more.

The average rate of fire was 3-4 shots per minute. If they were quick enough, they could do 5. Remember, they weren't there to have a pretty little tea party with the enemy. The objective was to spit as much lead as possible into the enemy, so if you volley fired, you'd want your whole battalion to be firing 3-4 shots a minute, in unison, so that you could kill more of the enemy and make them panic.

Imagine shooting at your enemies and missing, and you have to take a million years to reload, and all of your enemies are locked and loaded. Wars back then must have been very tedious.

Our term for unfit for military service, meaning "4F".... It's derived from back in the flintlock era, meaning the person was missing four or more front teeth. Hence, could not bite off the top of the paper for the cartridge round, therefore would prove problematic in formation while re-loading. 4F.
