And that's why bags of landscaping bark are so expensive at Lowes , Home Depot or your local nurseries. By the time it got to that mountain it had already been moved 2 or 3 times? I know it would make more work, but if it could be stacked in rows instead of a giant mountain , so it could be turned over maybe once a year, it would speed up the aerobic and anaerobic decomposition time. Most of that mountain would already be back to topsoil and ready to sell in the 20 years it was being stockpiled. I don't want to tell Wade his business, but I would like to see him be able to make some money off of his waste.

I agree with some of the comments. As you get back farther in the pile, the HOT dirt would be prime for screening. You even mentioned they were going to use the stuff where they are dumping as a topsoil. That would be a great source of exra income for them. just my humble opinion

I don't know what screened topsoil makes in USA but for cost of transport etc I would say profit margins would not be high would make more sense to do what they already

Enough with the gardner "if you could only; flip, mix, mulch, bag, sack, stack and sell at lowes" comments about the freakin bark. This is Dirt Perfect not Bark Perfect. Good discussion on productivity at 12:45. This is what the operation should be focused on,.. moving dirt,... er bark,... perfectly at optimum efficiency. 😉

Tell Let’s Dig18 he will have another screening job in a few years. You hauled a big chunk out of there. Does Logger Wade haul to his own sawmill or to others too? It looks like you could put side boards on Tiny. Does it have pockets or does it just look that way. You guys were already efficient though.

I’m super glad you broke down about smaller equipment and efficiency. In my neck of the woods ( west Texas ) I do mechanical grubbing with a Skid steer. Our old farmers think you need a 200 series track hoe(to grub) and a D 6 to rake ( both 130-150 per hour), I run 75 per hour and usually come in 12 to 1800 less than the big boys doing the same job. I grub a little bit slower but I can rake a 6 mph. With the equipment nowadays power is there I have an old d4, and my skid steer weighs the same and has almost double the horse power but a multitude of attachments. Bigger isn’t always better.

The right tool for the job! People can argue what it is. But, when it goes smoothly and there are no breakdowns you’ve optimized productivity. If you’ve been in a well designed and operated production environment, you know when you have the right tools. For that operation, loading trucks was production. Waiting on trucks would be downtime if you weren’t doing necessary prep to the worksite while waiting. (Theory of Constraints... the trucks were the bottleneck... but we’re a useful one.) Looked to me that you had just the right Men, Machines, Methods & Materials for the job. I enjoyed watching the process mix!

That's a lot of bark to move, just for fun try to figure out how many buckets it works out to. Mike not to question your math but .8 gph is pretty good are you sure you're not out 1 decimal point. Just for a comparison my pickup gets aprox 20 mpg now if I drove for an hr at 60 I would use 3 gallons in that hr. That would be 2.2 gallons more an hr then the 140, if these new machine's are that fuel efficient we are getting ripped off with the new trucks.

Before you said it was really hot on top of that pile, I was thinking the same thing. I was watching all that steam rise. Actually, I think that it would have degraded faster if they would turn it. It gives all the bacteria, etc, more air in the middle of the pile and they can work better. Of course, they are not in the business of making dirt, so what they are doing now makes more sense. I didn't realize that those machines used that little gas. I can burn 5-6 gallons an hour in my 3/4 ton pickup. So, 3/4 gallon/hour would be really sweet in my truck. Thanks for the always excellent content. I really appreciate your time and effort.

On a question for you, how big is the fuel tank on the 140? With my big interest being long range boats, .8 gallons per hour at 8 knots ( 10 miles per hours roughly ) tank size is a massive factor. a 2000 mile trip between fuelling points at .8 gallons per hour would need 2,500 gallon tank. ( and take 200 hours to complete )
