+somebody else I agree. If your going to mess around with heavy machines, part of the cost is a forklift rental to make things easier and safer. You can get them for the whole weekend and normally only pay for one day.

Indeedy Adam. Factory I work at owns a couple that live in the shipping/receiving dept but the heavy duty, non-electric one regularly ventures out to the department I'm in to bring us new lots of the parts for the air brake chamber sub-assemblies we assemble. We simply would not be as safely run and efficient an operation as we would be without them.

+oxtoolco Thanks for the comments Tom. I remember one of your videos mentioning the Steel on Steel no deal, and it's stuck with me since. Kevin had originally mentioned getting some machine skates to use and I suggested some plywood between them and the shaper if he used them. I've dealt with the same types of problems, or seen them. I'm looking forward to getting this machine cleaned up nicely and getting some practice on it.

I didn't get any history on it. Kevin said when the current owner bought the shop back in the 80's the shaper was already in there.

Cummins with a manual, on a hill, with cross traffic, sometimes ya just gotta let 'er buck!

You called it! That hill next to shop was steep. When I pulled up there to load band saw the first time the truck and trailer were straight up and down hill, had both emergency brake and truck in gear and it still rolled! Had to put truck at an angle and block the wheels and I was still concerned when Kevin and the other guy were up there trying to lock the head down!

...He juuuuuuuust about wiped out that underside storage box, too... o!O

I don't think my old goat would have brought my 24K lb drill up onto the road off of that hill. I would have had to have got a run from the bottom and had people shut down the road and hope for the best!! Glad I won't be doing that again!!

Funny you say that, every time I throw something on the trailer that's over it's tagged weight I kind of think to myself; "this is nothing compared to what Brian did! If he made it, so can I"!

That’s beyond ‘I squashed my finger’ weight. Never dealt with anything that heavy personally. Looking at that gearbox shaft it’s an everyday occurrence in the world of the heavy duty machinist. Can’t wait to see it being delivered and then in use on an SNS!! Cheers Adam

Did you see how far it moved when he first backed away from the building!? Could have used a single strap holding it back.

I'm pretty certain he did that on purpose. He had a smaller bite than he really wanted and made a small "adjustment" with the "brake" pedal.

+MrPirax If your truck and trailer weighs over a certain amount you have to have a CDL license.

As most people don't realize that with a machine shop, generally speaking, the tooling cost more than the machine :)

I personally love the nostalgia factor and the creativity that goes along with using one. I am sure there are as many CAD users saying the same things about drawing boards and pencils as EDM and CNC users are saying about manual machines. I think it is about time for someone to make a video of how to use the bathroom without taking your cell phone with you. Now Apple is making the Apple Wrist Watch . Coming soon is the human Chip implant that does the thinking without any effort at all. Me personally I love soaking my brain in all the knowledge the You Tube Machinist community provides me. I actually love seeing the use of steam powered machines and the old L.S Starrett 64 indicators. I also love seeing a really high tech CNC machine operating but I get bored pretty fast watching those things. I watched a guy make a file by hand with a chisel to show it was done hundreds of years ago.. Now I loved that video.

The head doesn't always 'get' what the heart wants and vice versa, but I reckon the heart is where true happiness lies. That's my 5 cents worth on it anyway.
