@@2xRainb0w sorry 2019 not 18. I remember going on a hike and I brought my headphones and all I could do was play two way mirror and is it really you on replay so I was able to check my photos and find that day lol.
Coming from someone who never got into Deftones, I think the album is almost perfect. Definitely AOTY for me. Despite all the comparisons made to other bands, you can’t deny how impressive it is. It’s a lot more easier to appreciate if you listen without pause. What really makes this album is how much of a “journey” it is to listen from beginning to end with all the amazing transitions. It really sinks you in and immerses you in it
All I'll say about Deftones... If you liked this, "Koi No Yokan" is a great album that shares a lot of the sounds you hear in this album... Maybe a bit less aggressive, but I'd go as far as saying that that exact album i named potentially inspired Loathes mellow/melodic sound.
@@Ennui. what’s funny is that the album cover to this almost seems inspired by Koi No Yokan with the sprites and stuff, and if you watch the “Broken Vision Rythym” video by Loathe, at one point they make the EXACT look of the Koi No Yokan album. Feel like i’ve been the only one to notice it lol
@@Ennui. sorry, not the song “Broken Vision Rythym”, i meant “Agressive Evolution”. @ the :54 second mark, you’ll see exactly what i mean ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mGcb28aqJjo.html
@@Ennui. haha thanks, and right!? I remember seeing that and thinking “what’re the fuckin chances”, because both of these album are in my ALL-TIME albums so for both to interwine like that was insane to me lol
I liked this album a lot upon my first listen, but as I began to understand it more I fell completely in love. Stylistically the album is all over the place, but I think that's a vehicle to help the concept and the general sonic journey of the album develop. From my understanding it seems like a downward spiral, but from a plethora of different perspectives that eventually converge. In the beginning, there are a healthy mesh of melodic and heavy moments, but such moments aren't as oppressive or noisy as they are on the latter half of the record. Red Room is sonically around where I think the album stops developing the "world" it's built and focuses on the downward progression. Screaming and Is It Really You? create the illusion of recovery and seem to serve as a deceiving gradual upward progression after the severe mental drop of Red Room. Then instability comes back. Gored and Heavy Is The Head bring you back to the Red Room mentality, but from a place of insanity rather one of anger or shock. Then A Sad Cartoon comes, and it's similar to Is It Really You? or Two-Way Mirror stylistically but implies a completely different feeling. It's bittersweet. It's the acceptance of something horrible. And though there's beauty in that clarity, there's dread too. And that's where I Let It In comes in at the end, the title track. Whatever "it" is, it's loomed in the distance and affected the inhabitants of the album's world in different ways... but it's also had its gradual effect on everyone involved. By the end, it took everything, from everyone. It's like a continuation of the clarity from A Sad Cartoon, but less bittersweet and more overthought and ruminated. It's had time to sink in and become isolating bleakness and grief. I see, you are; there's no meaning anymore.
I guess I need to dig into the lyrics to see what the progression looks like. But musically I'm not sold so much on the journey of the album even if you explain it well. Either way though, it's hard to balance these disparate sonics on the same album so while I may have done it a bit differently, there's always going to be pros and cons to any track order I think.
@@FriedTheo To be honest I've listened to the album an unhealthy amount of times, so I could also be projecting a bit of my own meaning onto it lol. I think the smooth transitions between songs definitely helped with the night and day stylistic switches, but it is still a valid criticism. I'm excited to see how they mesh these styles together more fluidly!
@@paulbladder2 Yea I agree. It could also be that we're witnessing the apotheosis of their sound. It could just be that this is just the right amount of raw to make it good. We shall see!
I can totally understand how you guys felt about the album as a whole, for the first few listens it’s incredibly emotionally exhausting almost to the point of un-enjoyment. It happened to me around my 6th or 7th listen I shut my phone off, laid on the floor and stared blankly at my ceiling while listening and I understood and appreciated it more. This album is truly a journey for me, emotionally exhausting? Yes, however it’s that way in the best way. My album of 2020 for sure. I cannot wait for my next listen and I can’t wait till they release more albums. Great review guys!!!
This is my AOTY, been listening to them since the cold sun days. Their themes and sound is pushing boundaries and this is the band I use for newer metal listeners as a gateway like two way mirror but the thing is they encompass everything so they give a sound that everyone can like and pick out but. The album run from beginning to end is a journey especially when your high, lol. But their older stuff is also good like east of Eden and it’s yours, I look forward to seeing what these guys do in the future because they are so new and they are already shaking the scene up. Cheers from California, USA.
I've been listening to Loathe since 2017. I've been a metalhead for 12 years. Loathe are an amazing band. I listened to this album almost every day since it's release. Dsng I didn't know someone did a full album reaction to this.
i remember I was at Japan when they released this album, I was drunk after dinner and was exactly at that famous cross walk at shinjuku when i head the song "Two Way Mirror", jesus the feels it gave me at that time, it was so dreamy, its like your in a music video
Really dig this format of a full album listen through with discussion between tracks, especially for one of my favourite albums, would love to see more of this sort of video
@@FriedTheo My personal favourites from 2019/2020 have been Thornhill - Darkpool, Good Tiger - Raised in a Doomsday Cult, Palm Reader - Sleepless, Invent Animate - Greyview to name a few. I think Erra will be releasing a new album this year as well which I'm really hyped for!
I like most of those. Palm reader was definitely one of my faves from last year! Anyway, no pressure, but join the Discord server if you want to chat with myself and others about music. I've discovered a lot from the community. Https://Discord.gg/nnAQ7rp
That was a great analysis! This album really grew on me - I am such a fan of their first album and really needed to listen to this one 3-4 times before it sunk in, now I can say this year it is my AOTY. I would have rated it 6.5-7 on my first listen but after a couple more, a 9.
i had a very similar reaction to you the first time i listened to it. but by the 3rd listen, i came to the conclusion that it's one of the best albums i've heard in like...a LONG time. easy 10/10 it's disjointed nature is it's cohesion. it's a masterful example of production, songwriting and flow. In it's abrasiveness, there lies subtlety.
For Is It Really You? I broke down the chords between this song and Pink Maggit. Both are superficially similar in chord progressions. They share 1 or 2 notes but both are set in different keys. I'd say they both heavily use suspended chords, that's why they're similar in sound. Not trying to disagree with your opinions, you guys just got me curious as to whether they were similar in composition. Great stream. Cheers
my favorite album of 2020!! i feel like the album takes a while to get to the point, but at the same time you're never bored when listening, I love listening to it all the way through and find it sooo easy to just play in the background, or to listen to intensely and before i know it im on the closing track.
AOTY for me. It was Currents up until about a day ago with Loathe in second but they’ve just edged it out for me. This album is everything I love in music and more. Incredible and one of the best bands out right now. I hope they get a huge following soon as they deserve it so much. Plus, their live shows look NUTTY. I need to see them live after covid so bad.
My wish for my birthday would be that you two review the album called, - "Odyssey to the West", by a band named "Slice the Cake". Please, at least check it out.
Absolutely Ohms was... Incredibly underwhelming for me. I'm a huge Deftones fan, but Ohms was.. hard to listen to But this album right here.. oh my god. It's just phenomenal back to front.
When you guys were comparing "Is This Really You?" to Pink Maggit, I thought it sounded wayyyy more like Minerva off Deftones' self-titled album lol. From chord progression to vocals.
Glad i run into this channel, liked ur review and i'd recommend u to check other Loathe's album The Cold Sun as well as Sleep Token's Sundowning and greetings from Russia!

personally this album took me a bit. the shoegaze influence was actually somewhat uncomfortable to listen to at times since the distortion was so prominent in the mix. some riffs felt like they didn't hit, and overall I was disappointed, but everyone was telling me it was good so I gave it another shot. it wasn't until my second listen that I really started to enjoy the cleaner tracks, and finally after listening to a few more tracks like new faces in the dark and gored, I began to appreciate the heaviness. this isn't the first band that has taken a few more listens to like (mastodon was definitely the first) but it probably won't be the last. the album is now one of my favorites
I compare the here and there rhythm of this album to that of a symphonic orchestra where you have ebbs and flows with highs and lows that are meant to invoke a range of emotions. It is a syncopated cacophony of sound haha
anyone have recommendations on bands that sounds similar to just the part with clean vocals on Aggressive Evolution, like remotely similar vibe and tone. love Loathe/this album, great vid
@@JR-rk3hs fucking love White Pony. Korea and Change always get me in the mood for more metal. Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes are great for more clean stuff (mostly the second half of Diamond Eyes).
I'm still into it, I was actually speaking to Marcos about it recently. He is generally listening to a lot less heavy music though so not sure he has an opinion on its longevity. I do think it has lost some of its appeal over time. But I'm not sure I can articulate why!
I have only given it one or 2 more listens. I don't think my opinion on the whole has changed, but I do find myself enjoying it a little more overall. Currently listening to the new Palm Reader album, can highly recommend that if you liked this one.
@Roberto Clemente, I can't remember the exact context in which I said that, but I think I meant that this album jumps around a lot more, stylistically. It wasn't intended as a criticism - the early Deftones albums are some of my favourite music.
@@defyecon1753 dont worry. Even if it was criticism, it would be your opinion, wether I like it or not. My comment was not intended as a personnal atk on either of you! All good! :)
I love this album sooo much!! The track screaming should be called breathing because that’s exactly what that track does. It lets the rest of the album breathe. And I agree, they should’ve moved it up the track list to like track 3 instead of 8.
