The California Spiny Lobster season has just begun, and we go freediving to catch these delicious invertebrates. After catching a few of these tasty crayfish, I show you how I like to prepare them for grilling on the Traeger pellet grill.

Great vid, Chris. Good to get information from someone so attuned to nature. I, also being a man of nature, shall tonight raise an amber-colored single malt from Scotland that I shall dispatch most humanely saluting you and your family.

Hahaha good stuff Nick. As always thanks for your kind support of the channel. My wife is a marine biologist specializing in pelagic invertebrates, so I get to learn all kinds of interesting facts about the lobsters and other inverts. Maybe one day I can get her on the channel to talk about he natural history of the lobsters... they have a fascinating lifecycle. They actually have 11 pelagic larval forms before they become the benthic final form. Such a trip.

@@chrisblevinsfishing Again, good stuff, Chris. Regards to your wife and son. I think getting her on your channel for this discussion would be great. I'll be looking for it.

I hit La Jolla again today on my inflatable and hooked into my first yellow!! Fought her for a good 5 mins and had it all the way up to see color and shape and there were 2 seals right next to me so I had to try and horse it quick before they stole it and unfortunately it happened to be on my lightest setup with 25lb mono and snapped like 10 feet away... and then it just sat there for like 3 seconds completely exhausted😩..... still VERY gutted about it lol gotta get back out there!!!! As always really appreciate all the motivation you and your videos provide man!! And I will 100% definitely be cookin some bugs like this! Thanks for sharing

You are a ninja for grabbing those at night without a tank. The grilling and food section was awesome too! I do all my lobstering with the hoops off the PA14. I recently bought a scotty #1050 downrigger off amazon and plan on getting it going. lobster season got in the way but should be fun to target some hali's once it's mounted.

Right on Lee, ya the freediving is a bit challenging bit worth it when it pays off. I want to get that down rigger too, possibly to run an underwater go pro off it. Cheers!

Another great vid Chris. How long were those bugs in your traeger? It looked like daytime when they went in and night when they came out.

Hey Mark, any recommendations on what gloves to use for handling spiny lobster? I hear getting stuck by one of those spines can be pretty painful and that they get infected quite easily too so I'm trying to play it as safe as possible. Great content as always!

wow how croooool. did you know lobsters can feel their meat blistering before they die :'D Awesome video brother! You doing any hooping this year?
@isaiahvarga8720
@isaiahvarga8720 3 года назад
I've never seen anyone clean them that way, I just twist the tails off and toss the carapace in the trash with all the guts in it. Then I just devein the lobster and cook just the tail, that way looks a lot harder, great video.

Chris, Great video as usual. I went hoop netting with my wife last night and only got two lobsters. We decided to warp it up after only one pull due to rough ocean conditions which was much worse than the forecast. Do you do any hoop netting?
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
Hi Fishing Couple! Thank you! No I havent done hoop netting, I use to do a lot of spear fishing so I already have good freediving gear. Buying all the nets and stuff for hooping is a big investment, so I just stick to the techniques I already know. Freediving at night can be a little spooky, especially considering October is peak season for great white shark activity down here in SoCal. Cheers!

I don't pay any attention to any talk of "feelings" when it comes to shellfish preparation. ....cook em up eat em up.

How long can you keep them alive for after being caught? Also, are they just in the ice chest with no water, or do you throw some salt water in there?

What piers are good to catch lobsters in San Diego? I’m new to lobster fishing this year.

Any pier where it's legal to fish will likely be good for lobsters! Good luck Cesar, and thanks for watching.

Thanks amigo! I'm gonna switch tactics and maybe I will do a halibut tutorial at some point. We don't use the same tactics as you guys up north... but I have wondered if the downrigger, flasher, brined anchovy techniques would get more bites. Typically I only get BIG halibut and they are basically bycatch while yellowtail fishing dropper loops on live mackerel. Thinking about buying a downrigger one day. Cheers!

I didn’t see a single ad in this video, did RU-vid demonetize you for this video because of the lobster dispatching in boiling pan portion of the video? Anyways nice video to see for sure.
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
Tamalpias that’s weird... no I don’t think so I’m still seeing ads on it. Do you have adblocker? Btw sorry for having ads... probably pretty annoying for people but making a couple bucks helps me keep the channel going. Cheers!
@tamalpias
@tamalpias 3 года назад
@@chrisblevinsfishing the reason why i mentioned i don't see any ads is because i usually watch them to help support youtubers like yourself recoup some of the expenses so no i don't see the ads as an annoyance nor do i have ad blocker. The bay area youtubers i follow usually dispatch their catch off camera to prevent complaints that can demonitize the videos hence i wasn't sure if dropping lobsters into the pot caused me not to see any ads on this video. i watched it twice and didn't see a single ad so just letting you know.

@@tamalpias Dang that sucks... usually if I get a disgruntled viewer they will leave a comment or at least a dislike. Hope that doesn't happen in my YT videos, I bleed them out in a bunch of videos haha😬 I checked it and it is monetized and showing ads for me and other friends. Good looking out though thanks for letting me know. I think those bay area guys have WAY more subs and views than me so probably the bleeding hearts aren't finding me yet hahaha. Even SeaWorld is advertising on it, go figure.

I'm gonna be that guy and offer you the advice to dispatch the lobster before dropping them in the boiling water. If you drive a large knife through the underside between the legs, it kills them pretty much instantly, and then you drop him in then. It won't hurt you to add in that extra step so I'd suggest that you do that. Also, I'm gonna have to say that spiny lobster meat spoils very slowly. It can be dead for awhile and still be good. crab meat spoils withing a couple hrs at room temp, but lobster can go at least twice as long, so you don't have to throw the lobster out if you accidentally left it sitting.

They don’t feel pain like humans do but still have pain receptors, it’s not the way you think it is but you have a point
@ocrun6765

More humane way to end the lobster's day is to cut down axis before you boil him. Puerto Nuevo style. You have to do it anyhow later to grill butterfly. Boiling is longer torture for them. Plus you can grill starting from cold meat and get more wood smoke flavor. I'm sure the lobsters themselves give thumbs up for the Kerrygold. That's essential.
