They are still trying to rebuild from seven months ago when a wildfire ravaged the island killing more than 100 people and destroying 2,200 structures.
I find this so ironic. Maui needs tourism ($.7 of each $1 from tourism), yet there is a vocal demographic who wants to keep tourists OUT. Not long ago the cry was *don’t come to Maui.* People listened. Now it’s “Please come and spend your money!” But the first message still resonates. Heck, see comments on any Maui fire video. So who wins when an economy loses 70% of the income?
It's always been so interesting to me the love/hate (more hate) relationship Maui residents have with tourists. I've been going to Maui for the last 20 years and I've never felt welcome by the locals. But it's probably because I invade all of their local hangouts as my in-laws are from Haliimaile. 🤣🤣 But as annoying as tourists can be, I've never really heard any appreciation for them. Sad really.
we were on maui in jan, loved it Maui, many parts of the island to discover, loved the drive to up country and wonderful/exciting Helicopter ride, making plans to go bad back next year.
