Bit of a random thing for this channel. Was busy building a workbench when this happened just down the road. House was trashed. Christmas eve, too.

To avoid confusion, and for info only: 'Officer' (as written on the side of at least one fire truck,) is the name of a suburb to the SW of Melbourne, Australia.
@フィリップフィリップ-e6d
Why do some of the firefighters have orange uniforms and others have yellow one?
@heli-crewhgs5285
@heli-crewhgs5285 7 лет назад
フィリップ フィリップ The firefighters in the yellow gear are with the domestic, general purpose fire truck. Those in the brighter orange, lighter weight gear are with the lightly-equipped bushfire truck. They are not equipped with breathing apparatus and therefore, are unable to enter a burning structure.

Bright orange turnout gear is known as wildfire or bushfire ppe, yellow/greenish turnout gear is structural ppe, red hats are Captains.

Before any fire fighter jumps on the truck to go to an incident we put our 'turn out gear' on. The CFA issues it's fire fighters with 2 different types for different uses. Wildfire PPC: This is what we wear to any 'grass and scrub' fires where we need to be able to work in a hot environment for a long time and we need clothes that will protect us from fire and also light and breathable. We have our jacket, boots, gloves, over pants, helmet, goggles and P2 mask. This protects us from falling objects, burns, lacerations and minor heat. Structural PPC: Our structural PPC is a lot different to our wildfire PPC, due to the conditions we need to be totally protected when we are fighting fires generally very closely to ourselves. Nomex green and PBI gold are the two different types as you can see in the video, Nomex green is slightly lighter then the PBI gold but still offers the same amount of protection. The equipment is similar to the wildfire but it's much heavier. We have specialty made gloves, over pants, jacket, structure helmets with visors and boots.

@@heli-crewhgs5285 you're full of shit. The yellow gear is rural gear but is worn by newer members who haven't achieved structural qualifications. All it means is that they can only undertake external fire fighting duties at structural fires. The truck they arrived on DOES carry breathing aparatus.

1. The heavy pump has 2 hose reels sticking out like dogs balls whilst you fluff around wasting time running out canvas hose that will leak water inside the house therefore increasing overall damage!!! really?? 2. The guys in Officer's pump need to wait for the truck to stop before jumping out!! 3. Why is an urban Lieutenant responding to a structure fire in wildfire gear? Why are any of them in wildfire gear unless they don't have their respond to urban fire modules! It is easy to play armchair expert, but that was sloppy!
@harryhighpants5789

1. The reel is too heavy!! Seriously?? Maybe hit the gym, the reel is instant water, I had no trouble pulling 90mt off. Canvas is just old old old school habit - and slower to get the water on, clean up, restowe. 2. Safety, safety, safety - do you really want to argue that's acceptable?? Maybe ask the chief? 3. Poor answer mate - you are obviously admitting not enough trained in structural by finding silly excuses. There was barely enough crew there in structural gear to run stage 1 BA - i.e 2 in/2 out let alone the rest of the functions if a scene is managed correctly. As for the Lt, how many sets would you have out at cleaning at once?? And don't shit me about "responded from the tanker" - it responded to a structure fire mate - you need to do better than that - or is the standing order now that if you respond on a tanker you must be in wildfire gear????? I think not! I'm comfy in my chair ;-)

1. you weren't there, there are a whole stack of potential reasons you mightn't be aware of 2. door was open but nobody jumped out of anything before it was stopped... watch it again 3. it took em two minutes to get there from when the 000 call was placed. considering the house was already trashed throughout how do think it would have gone down if Harry Highpants was there to point out they were in wildfire gear and to go and get changed? easy to criticise but I didn't see you there with a bucket or a hose. how much did you donate to the family who lost everything on christmas eve?
@harryhighpants5789
@harryhighpants5789 7 лет назад
Rather than me watch it again, as I don't think the mistakes will change, you should re-read your comments - you are typifying the sloppiness of excited little volunteers, not clear thinking firefighters. You're obviously a wally - so I won't try and reason with the unreasonable. You don't even make a clear point about the house being trashed - you seem to advocate incorrect PPC on a fireground. Try to stop embarrassing the "Professional" firefighters who have to sadly wear the same uniform as you!

Harry, the Heavy Pumper appears to be the staff truck from Pakenham. Their decision to use canvas is perfectly appropriate as you get higher flow rates compared to the live reel. 230L/min doesn't impact a large fire as much as 475L/min, so the staff Incident Controller has directed a canvas line to be used. You are right about the doors being opened on the move, won't defend that. As for the PPC, you are correct IF the crew had come from station AND all had structure gear available. If they didn't have the gear, or had been at another job (after all it was peak summer), they may not have had the option to grab structural gear. You are correct that structure gear should be worn to a house fire, but you don't know the training, equipment available or preceding events to make a harsh call of a 2 min video. I've seen numerous examples of staff ending up at wild fires in structure gear, I've seen numerous examples of staff looking like twits in the first 2 min of a major job. It happens to us all at times. In this case, the staff crew got the canvas on in 1 min, vol BA crew look kitted up in less than 90sec, water supply secured within 2 min. These are the things that really matter and they happened fast.

I'm not sure about your understanding of pumps and hydraulics mate. A HP reel should be run at 250lpm (2500 - 3000kpa) and has a very good impact on fire at high pressure with less water damage due to lesser volume. This is not technically a "large fire". 475lpm should not really be put through 38mm canvas as that's the kind of volume you are looking for in a 65 or 50mm attack line. Your methods will result in excess water damage and will not help with scene preservation for investigation. As for my knowledge of training and equipment - I have 22yrs spanning both Vic services including as a Lt in busy D13 urban brigade - and there is that little old saying about perception being reality. As for staff turning up to a wildfire in structural clothing, as you said, you don't know what they were doing prior and it is better to be overdressed initially then get it sorted soon after! It's all about safety mate. But thanks for some objective feedback rather than the earlier emotional rantings, it makes for better discussion.

Man that there's people in there they're already dead can't believe how long it takes him to get suited up they should already had their air tanks on and everything by the time they got there I used to drive a forest service truck and it had the passenger seat had to cut out for your tank so you can be sued it up
