Charter boat captain Mike Goodwine says normally bad red tide doesn't come past the Skyway into Tampa Bay, and he believes what happened at Piney Point a few months ago has everything to do with it.
I agree that Piney Point is certainly to blame for the contribution. They need to be held accountable and to fund the efforts of cleanup, and prevention going forward!
@@drewvandeman3529 adding that mineral into salt water is what caused the algae to bloom progressively. Along with other toxin’s, pulling the oxygen out. Also, the oil leak in the pan handle (which is now a dead zone) is spreading will eventually affect us.
@C S yea, just like he called a state of emergency for Elsa, that wasn’t even a tropical storm. The only smart he has is going in his pocket. Now I am headed to a drive through to pick up my open alcohol drink. 😂🤣
@Captain Blacktooth algae bloom which toxic waste causes it to bloom so yes! it is Piney points problem and cause!!!!!! Captain of what? your bathtub?!?!?!
@Captain Blacktooth Please enlighten us instead of using your know it all knowledge, meaning without actual facts, in case you didn't know. Also, please use your own words and don't copy off someone else's(internet) page. You have 4 hours, begin.
@Captain Blacktooth this is why we are taught biology in school. The piney point released contaminated water containing nitrogen and phosphorus. In excess these nutrients can lead to the overgrowth of algae, which can block sunlight from penetrating the water and reach beneficial plants; plants that normally take up nutrients and send it on up the food chain as you hopefully know. Toxic algae blooms and fish kills result from this nutrient dump, that our governor let happen and said would be safe. The opposite has happened is just fueling the destruction of the beautiful Floridian gulf coast, as well ass the entire gulf of mexico. You are right about red tide occuring on it's own but we cannot fuel it, or be ignorant of science for your own comfort.
It is NOW time to indict those companies/factories who are accounted for the majority of the pollution. No more slaps in the wrists!! You pollute our waters, YOU GO TO JAIL. Period!
This man speaks the truth. I’m a life long resident and have made the same observations. This red tide is affecting the inner areas of the bay where it normally doesn’t reach and where our young gamefish are trying to grow. Piney point dumped so much nutrient pollution into the bay that it severely worsened the red tide.
WHY THE HECK DID THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, BACK IN APRIL, DECIDE DUMPING THE CONTAMINATED WATER WAS A WISE COURSE OF ACTION? WHO IS IN CHARGE? THIS A STATE AGENCY?
Imagine how bad it would have been if the pond had collapsed. They were in between a rock and hard place with regards to making sure the ponds banks didn't collapse. There does need to be a review of how the citrus grooves in florida get their fertilizer. Just remember it could have been million times worse.
It was the department of environmental protection that advised the governor. He's not an environmental specialist. He took the word of the professionals in their field.
Deathsantis pumped it into the water! If he won’t take any recommendations from the CDC, with regards to millions of people’s health, you think he’s going to listen to the EPA? Bahahahaha! But I take no solace in the fact that he’ll have a looooooooong Political career thanks to the Millions of Morons in the Country.
People don't want to risk their jobs but that can risk the livelihoods of the people in the community and the life of the ecological system in Florida. I guess that's OK for them guys...
@C S 100% correct isn't it a shame it really is its just like Peter when they asked him weren't you with that guy Jesus " nope never saw him before in my life"
@@wavelength7503 excellently point! I’m a fisherman, so those industries polluting the water should be held accountable and pay fines to clean up our waterways!
Rainbow trout do not live in Fl. The southern most rainbow trout on the east coast of the US are in northern Georgia in cool mountain streams. The reporter made a mistake. The dead fish was a spotted sea trout. AKA speckled trout. A member of the drum family.
Money. Your governor thought it better to screw commercial fishermen and the local economy than to make the Piney Point people pay for the disaster they caused. It's called "Good Republican Leadership."
Yes it's definitely related too piney point but what about all the sewage treatment plants that overfill this time of year and all the immaculate green over fertilized lawns. We just need a cat 5 to come through and thin the herd.
Lol, well y'all are thinning the herd for the rest of us, I swear Florida is a magnet, drawing the worst we have to offer, from the lazy fake rich lawn lovers moving for the sun but never leaving the AC, the credit spenders, the hey y'all watch this crowd, to the crazy cranks that believe all that biblical alien stuff. Every bottom feeder and show boat of every type. Let's keep quiet about it sinking, and the water rising, perhaps we can alter the storm track maps too. Set up a macro to advertise flash sales, free brand name accessories, free drinks, or boat parade hashtags whenever there's a tropical storm..
Wow, what a shame for all the marine life that died. People in Florida, I hope you do try to pass some environmental laws that would prevent corporations from dumping toxic stuff into the waters. The waters do not just belong to them, they belong to all others also.
Blame the ones dumping the crap into the water. Government is always the problem. Solution: get government out of the way and let us fix the problem. Private sector is the way to go. We can regulate them without beurocrats.
Don’t forget all the Democrat governors that welcomed phosphate mining to the state, every governor since 1966 is responsible. Every homeowner with lush green lawns, every greedy developer that cut down mangroves and built sea walls, every municipality that didn’t maintain their leaking sewer lines, etc... are responsible. RIP Tampa Bay
Keep voting these Republicans in! This disaster has been happening for the past 30 years under Republican control! How about we vote people in who care about the environment? Why only vote party line? But I think I already know that answer......🙄
Everyone needs to look at their own contribution to red tide. Do you or your landscapers use fertilizers? Millions of bags are uses along the Florida coasts each year. Sandy soil doesn't hold onto it very long compared to the soils found in the farm belt. The path to the ocean is very short.
I don’t know my salt water fish but I thought specs or speckled trout was saltwater fish and rainbow trout were a cold river / stream fish and stocked ponds and lakes
I think rainbow trout can also be saltwater fish. They spend part of their lives in freshwater and then move to saltwater where they are called Steelhead. Not all rainbow trout do this though. some only stay in lakes or rivers and remain as freshwater fish.
Let's be honest Florida has never really cared about the environment or public safety. It's all about the money in Florida. Look who they have as a governor and who they voted for as president. How many wetlands were ruined all in the name of progress? They build on everything. Pretty sad.
I agree piney point caused this, Ron desantis Should be sued as the state representative currently period. I understand what occured at piney point started before his time but he has been in the position and approved the dumping into the bay.
Is this Florida,Where they always want less rules - less government. Now they want laws? Also remember companies are now citizens- What would happen to you if you dumped into the bay- Jail? Piney Point will maybe pay a few thousand. The CEO will not miss $1. Next year the company will get your tax dollars, maybe a low interest loan. YES less rules & laws. Companies need more freedom. Also remember the last president wanted to eliminate the EPA. YES less laws. Companies will always do the right thing. But for who
Just left hospital tonight I fish I swim I was diagnosed with aquired community pnemonia hospital says looks like red tide symptoms ,,. Becareful everyone . I'm so sick
They have been doing this for years and those politicians look the other way……when will the community rise up and do something to stop this monstrosity once and for all !
How in the hell were they even allowed to dump that water? The state would have been all on their ass!! They should have been forced to pay to have it hauled off and cleaned!!
A few months ago you see "Enviromental Crisis" all over the news about piney point. Now this, and none of the media say piney points name. We all know what's up.
I am so thankful we moved to ALASKA 47 yrs ago, no red tide in 45/50 deg water, problem is we bought waterfront in so st pete for winters, at least we dont Have to go to it. As a kid Florida was great but today its becoming a cesspool, with really bad leaders
Yep, Florida was a beautiful place growing up as a kid! A total mess now! They been dumping in the Bay for years! Spraying the rivers! Causing fish kills everywhere! Killing everything! Everyone needs to OPEN THEIR EYES,,,,and do remember our taxes are paying for it! THEY WORK FOR US?
Where are the fines for all this? If I get caught peeing off my boat into tampa bay I would probably go to jail. These folks destroyed the bay and nothing is happening
At 2:50 NO not rainbow trout. Speckled trout. Rainbow trout is a freshwater species that likes cold water streams and is not found anywhere near Tampa Bay and in fact would be unusual to find in the wild, anywhere in Florida. Speckled Trout is a saltwater species found in inshore and inland waters and is commonly seen in brackish water but not freshwater streams. They don't even look alike.
Maybe that reporter was in a hurry identification of dead fish is a not always easy got the dolphin right though this is a terrible shame a real eye opener l hope no quick fix omg
Good job Mr. Mike and Mr. William. Thank you guys for calling these people out. Definitely recommend you guys as charters (Blackneck adventures and Badfish charters) I'll see y'all at the cockroach boat ramp
I guess we're lucky that the whole containment Pond did not fail and it all went in the bay like I said before you think the State of Florida would take care of it's Goose that Lays the golden egg
When tourism and the recreational fishing & boating industry collapses in Florida it might get someone’s attention. This, coupled by the loss of property tax revenue from abandoned coastline residences will be the implosion point. Good luck. After five generations of living in Florida, we are out.
The sad thing is. This has been going on for decades. Piney Point is a drop in the bucket compared to what Cargill is doing in the Alafia river. Politicians mostly turn and look the other way, both parties, because the fix isn't easy and no one wants to put thier names on it if the fix doesn't work. Phosphate industries helped central Florida grow from nothing to where we are now, but it's time for them to relocate the refineries and stuff out to the middle of the state away from environmentally sensitive areas.
I'm sorry but did anyone notice that she looked right at a Speckled trout and called it a Rainbow trout. Rainbow trout or trout in general don't even live in Florida. The speckled trout is actually a drum.
You can put all the laws in the books and all the rules and regulation BUT if you have the money, you can bypass everything....... That's the American way.
Good coverage in this report. Usually red tide is reported as though the main issue was the smell for people with waterside homes. As though it was a garbage issue. How long can fish populations survive these yearly disasters? And while Piney Point has made this year’s die off worse, how is this proven? And who do you sue, if the phosphate mining company that created the pond no longer exists? I don’t know the answers. But I want answers.
Hopefully they answer for this , I remember EVERYONE telling them not to do this to find an alternative and they didn’t care and took the easy way out . Now our freshwater rivers and heavy rain arnt enough anymore to keep the red tide at Bach
Pump it into the bay? It is nitrogen rich, wouldn't it be possible to truck it to a veggie farm, or cow pasture? I do understand how much more trouble and expense that would be but, dang.
"The Department of Environmental Protection released 200 million gallons of nitrogen rich water into Tampa Bay..." This is where our tax dollars are going? What is going on? Plant and harvest beneficial seaweed, make reefs for fish, stop polluting, grow mussels! That's what I say. People are shocked when things like this happen, but we need to put in work if we want nature to help us out. It's only fair. Imagine what Florida could be with more reefs, fish and nice water.
So..... Why is it that I can only keep one redfish per day? To protect them? Because losing them to red tide and rot is better than my dinner table. Stupid FWC.
i live on the east coast in indian river county we have some issue's here as well but not as bad as your area so i feel for you guy's over there please expose piney pointy as much as you can i know i will
It may not be absolutely linked, but that's what happens when you get rid of regulations. And people wonder why they're so strict on the West Coast in regards to the environment.
