From 2023, the Local Hero Concert is a new activity of the Stichting 18 September in Eindhoven, paying tribute to the Local Hero through music.
Today is the premiere and it will feature:
• Concert Local Hero.
• 100th birthday of our friend and liberator Joe Cattini
Making music with pleasure, in a friendly orchestra, with a good atmosphere: that’s ‘St Cecilia’.
We play mainly contemporary music, pop, rock, musical, as well as beautiful larger orchestral works.
Performances include: New Year’s concert in ‘De Wilgenhof’, Lampegat Carnival Mass in the Catharinachurch, Sunday afternoon concert at the Van Doornekiosk, Square concert on Jennerlaan, performances on King’s Day, Torchwood on the Stadhuisplein, all in Eindhoven.
The icing on the cake for us is ‘Stratum in Concert’, a grand concert with full orchestra, various singers, dancers and soloists in the Park Theatre, again on 25 November in the main hall of the Park Theatre in Eindhoven.

A march composed by Randy Beck
Jupiter Hymne, Gustav Holst
English composer Gustav Holst (l874 - 1934) had astrology as a great hobby. He was fascinated by everything to do with the universe. He used the symbolic meaning from ancient mythology as the basis for his seven-movement suite “The Planets”. Each movement of this seven-movement orchestral suite is named after a planet in the solar system. The Stratum Music Corps plays the fourth movement from this: Jupiter - The Bringer of Jollity.

New York Ouverture, Kees Vlak
New York is an impressive and vibrant metropolis, a melting pot of all kinds of peoples and religions, a city of immigrants. Names like Chinatown, Little Italy, Harlem and Greenwich Village testify to this. It is also known for its unique skyline of skyscrapers along the Hudson River. When Kees Vlak composed his overture, he drew inspiration from the music of great American composers such as Copland, Gershwin and Bernstein. You can hear recognisable motifs of these composers resound in New York Overture.
Klezmer Carnival, Philp Sparke
Klezmer music was brought to the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and ghettos of Eastern Europe by itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ‘klezmorim’ since the early Middle Ages, where they performed at celebrations, especially weddings. Since the 16th century, lyrics were added to klezmer music, by the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremonies at weddings), and by traditions of Yiddish theatre. The term klezmer gradually became more synonymous with instrumental music, in which the violin and clarinet in particular play the leading role.
Speaker Eric Nettekoven
Veteran
Aladin, composer Alain Menken, arrangement Paul Jennings
A medley featuring some of the most beautiful tunes from the oriental adventure Aladin and the Wonder Lamp: “Arabian Nights”, “Friend Like Me”, “Prince Ali” and “A Whole New World”.
Sound of Silence (version v Disturbed)
“The Sound of Silence” is a 1965 song by Simon & Garfunkel.
The song was written by Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel once summed up the meaning of this song as, “the inability of people to communicate with each other, not so much internationally, but especially emotionally.”
In 2015, American heavy-metal band Disturbed made a cover of the song. Exciting for lead singer David Draiman, but when Paul Simon bothered to compliment him on the cover via email, he knew it was right.
Ouverturer Rockopera Tommy/Top 2000
“Tommy” is the very first musical work explicitly labelled as a “rock opera”.
It is a work by British rock band The Who, written by songwriter-guitarist Pete Townshend. In the Netherlands, the song is best known as the recognition tune of the Top 2000 in The Netherlands.
Speaker Mayor J.R.V.A. (Jeroen) Dijsselbloem
Mayor of Eindhoven
Happy Birtday Song
Birthday song for our friend and liberator Joe Cattini
Kempenpoort, Wim Laseroms
Wim Laseroms is a composer from Brabant. Probably every orchestra has one or more of his songs in its repertoire.
A nice performance with this song was at Van Pierre bookshop where author Wim Daniëls presented his new book “De Tambour-maître”.
From the balustrade we played “Kempenpoort” with a mini instrumentation of one instrument per section, led by our tambour-maître Frans van de Meerendonk. Extremely surprising how well that turned out with “’t Harmonieke van St. Cecilia”
