Bluefin Tuna fishing Cape Cod on a commercial harpoon boat.
Ali and Rush head to Cape Cod to ride along and experience what it takes to harpoon a giant bluefin tuna from a stick boat. Only the right conditions will get the job done, and until it all lines up, Ali and Rush deviate from the course for a lobster roll and some striped bass fishing.

I do all my fishing on the cape. Loved this video but I have one point of criticism. Ali said that the only two species that come to mind are the bluefin tuna and the striped bass. Our offshore fishery is just as good as Southern California, if not better. We catch bigeye tuna, yellowfin, wahoo, blue marlin, and Mahi at the canyons and even catch Mahi and yellowfin inshore depending on the year.

The Monomoy rips are a blast. I fished down there a few summers back and 4 out of 5 boats that we were around all ran aground out there. The fifth boat being us, we got lucky. Wasn’t too hyped about almost jumping into that water with white sharks to get the boat off the shoals.

When I was a kid, I THINK about 1966 or so there were huge bluefin tuna under the dock in P-town because there were pods of killer whales all over, some guy harpooned one and it over 600 pounds. All the tuna traps between North Truro and P-Town were full and people were harpooning them from 13 foot Boston Whalers. Massive dead tuna with huge bites out of them were laying on the beach in Wellfleet, pretty epic.

If in the north east you should also check out a few other fish. Haddock, tautog and black sea bass. They may not be what is considered sport fish but they are damn good eating fish. Massive amounts of people go out for tautog and black bass every year. Stay away from the party boats and try to get out to Block Island on a smaller boat, the fish are all over the place though so you should do ok no matter where you go with an experienced captain
@LocalKnowledge

@@LocalKnowledge They sure are fun and damn tasty. They can be caught abundantly off the Cape but the biggest I've ever caught have been of RI. Double digit weight Tog are a hoot but stay smaller for eating fish. The large ones are females(breeders) anyways so it's best to let them go. Save several and if you have a cook or place to then they are great anyway. Baked, blackened(pan). fry them(fish n chips) and/or they are awesome in creamy fish chowder. Be Well and tight lines PS Check your dates when you go and if off Block Island then work in some 'slob' Stripers

I respect American fisherman because I never saw an overhaul of Blue fin tuna in a warehouse at one time like I saw in videos of Japan. I think we all should Think of it as a Special Treat and not everyday meal if it’s a fish that’s supply in ocean is diminishing and we can’t replenish with more stock.
@kcheong00
@kcheong00 6 лет назад
Problem is Japan is buying Tuna from all around the world. Which is am actually quite sad about because they won't be around at the rate we are going In Australia, we don't see any of those large blue fins in the markets. They are all exported because in Japan they pay higher prices. Shame because i love fatty tuna but its almost impossible to get unless you get terrible cuts/low quality or find a boat that will take you out to catch tuna. ($1500 + for the charter and no guarantee of catching one) We only get the smaller tuna because the giants fetch such high prices

I think it was 1964 but the Bluefin where in Cape Cod Bay thick, and they were huge. There were 700 pound tuna under the dock in Provincetown and there were dozens of Orca and Great Whites out there, there were 500 pound tuna washed up on the beach in North Truro and Welfleet with huge bites out of them. They were harpooning them from 13 foot Boston Whalers and tossing barrels out to wear the fish down and the Tuna Traps were packed full at low tide, was pretty spectacular.

We 100% Need to change our California Fish&Game laws to meet the size limit for bluefin for sake of giving them a spawning chance. Guys in SD are just hacking at them... I know we brought it down from 5 to 2 fish per person but the size limits need to be much bigger at least for the sake of reproduction the Blues barely start breeding around 400-450lbs... What do you guys think, I want your opinions on it. &Tightlines ALWAYS!!! Keep up the Vids my bros! Liked and Sub'D!

Hey Ando, thank you for watching the show. To answer your question, we believe in being good stewards of the ocean. The current bluefin regulations are based on a sound understanding of the reproduction and population dynamics based off research conducted by NOAA fisheries. We follow the regulations installed by these management organizations and practice catch & release when we've caught enough to feed our families. We have faith that the NOAA scientists and their organization will protect this amazing species that we have all enjoyed in our backyard the past four years. We always find going straight to the source is the best place to start when learning about the species we catch and the reasoning behind their regulations. swfsc.noaa.gov/textblock.aspx?Division=FRD&ParentMenuID=189&id=23120

First fish didn't die immediately from electrical zap . I'm sure many tuna have gotten hit from misplaced shots , wounding them ,but they got away , UNTILL a shark smelled them . I like fishing, but I'd rather get hooked then speared in some body part . Not many tuna spear fishermen use electrocution to kill fish. Granted it is more humane but you use it to save quality of meat. That's fine. Just don't like harpoons , especially when they wound a tuna that swims of. It's dead but not yet.
