The real gems of one country are usually pretty much out of the spotlight. And we must say Italy is no exception.
That's why I wanted to dedicate this video to what once used to be the absolute symbol of the typical, Italian day-to-day life --- IL MERCATO 🇮🇹
This brought back sooo many memories, and I couldn't wait to share them all with you 👯
So if you're planning to come to Italy, don't forget to take some time to stroll around your closest marketplace -I promise it will be 100% worth it!

I can't mention your name to my friends because they complain that you are all I talk about. I adore all of your videos, especially the ones on Italian cuisine and Italy! Best wishes all the way from India!😊

Thanks a lot for watching 💗 I'm not on IG, but I recently created a TikTok account! It's just old shorts from YT right now, still need to figure out how it works 🙈 I'll link that on my next video anyway!

In my town (in the U.K.) we used to have a weekly market up to the early 1990’s. Mixture of fresh food, clothes, CD’s, records, books, Butchers’ Van, smoking goods, etc. It got closed when the new shopping centre (Mall) was opened as it was seen as a bit ‘old fashioned’. Strangely enough about 5 years ago it returned but bigger and split into two. Some days it was the same as the old market but once a month there’s a ‘posher’ version with things like artisan jewellery, wooden goods, international food, rugs and throws etc (so more ‘luxury’ type goods). So after going out of fashion for about 25 years markets seem to have made a come back but with a ‘fancier twist’. Think it’s the success of the Christmas Markets in recent years that has bought it back, as it’s sort of like a non-Christmas version of the Christmas Market once a month.

That's interesting! I mean, I'm sure for local markets is still twice as hard to be as appealing as other shopping areas, and they usually need to come up with something special (like adding that "fancy touch") to draw attention to themselves... but hearing your story bodes well 🎀 Maybe once a month will go back to be once a week, and they'll emerge from that Christmas-Market model 🤞🏻 Hopefully!

Did COVID restrictions of the past possibly negatively affect those businesses? To the degree they were unable to return? Or did said restrictions cause a change in how locals shop?

Now that I'm thinking about it, COVID must have certainly taken its toll on them. On top of everything, when restrictions were in place those local mercati could be authorized only as long as they put barricades to "border" the paths within the stalls (to allow security to manage the flow of people)... maybe that too discouraged the overall experience and made it less worth it, even for locals 😕
