In this video we will look at some of things you probably didn’t know about some of the filming locations in the series, including Nora and Compo's homes, Sid's Café, and the Library.
= Where is Compo's bedroom window?
= Who is "N. R. Beall"?
= What location featured in about 40 episodes, where the Trio crashed their three-man bike, Ogden Butterclough’s car nosedived into a ditch, and Clegg’s gas barbeque set fire to Howard’s bench?
The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.

Brilliant Leigh thank you. The cafe was real and open when I was there in 2000, I had lovely tea and scones with jam and cream. Best wishes Leigh and thank you again. Gérard.

Thanks Gérard. Believe it or not, no one I asked could agree on the date the real cafe opened!

Lots of different sources, sometimes - as in a later video - one of the BBC people I follow on twitter will just randomly mention something relevant!

Thanks Peter! From memory we went to Holmfirth about 15 times over the period of about a year, for 2-3 days each time! Although we're usually rushing about to get filming done, not much time to enjoy the surroundings!

Surprised you didn't mention the front step to the 'Cafe'. To begin with it was a flat entrance from the square but a step seemed to evolve. I always found that interesting! Keep these insights into 'Summer Wine' coming. It's a great concept! Cheers

Just lovely. Look forward to all of your posts. Wonder if you have looked into the stunt doubles? Also wonder if you have looked into the wardrobe mistress? Know that sounds strange but have noticed how pressed the garments are and seemingly beautifully maintained the garments are. Thank you again. Blessings.

Thank you. There are subjects I would have like to have covered and people I would have liked to have spoken to. Sadly many tv professionals are only contactable via agents, and their details are often not publicly available. Also, many of them are now old, infirm or even deceased.

Great video Leigh about last of the summer wine houses i had a feeling that the right turning after Clegg house was not a turning to a road

@@upstagedbyadog If you ask me (which of course you aren’t, I know), you should make these videos as long as they need to be. They’re pure to catnip to someone like me, so there’s no danger of their outstaying their welcome (as far as I’m concerned, anyway).
@upstagedbyadog
@upstagedbyadog Год назад
@@pjbabmail Thanks PJ! I rarely watch videos on YT that are longer than about 20 minutes, and if you think about it a 30 min slot on commercial tv is only 22 mins of programme. Also, I know (the statistics confirm this) the non-character videos are not as popular and people watch less of the video. I'm trying to hit a happy medium - no I don't mean I'm trying to punch a smiling clairvoyant! 😉😉

Hi just watched when Morton come back from the shops i remember you said it not a road on right outside Glenda and Barry house and Toby I had feeling to no road on right of Barry and Glenda and Toby houses
@upstagedbyadog
@upstagedbyadog 6 месяцев назад
Yes, it's a dead end to the right looking at the house, not even a pedestrian walkway to the main road, either! So Moreton couldn't even walk or bike from that direction!

Have just discovered your videos and thoroughly enjoy them.I am particularly interested in filming locations and over the last 10 years I have tried to visit them. We have visited the more obvious ones like the cafe, Nora and Compo’s houses and Wesley’s house (and shed !) I have been on the narrow road with a view down to the Meal Hill bridge and lake. As you will know this road has featured in many scenes. However there are places we have yet to find...such as Barry’s house. I would love to visit the Meal Hill bridge and lake. Can you visit this or is it part of a private estate. Do you know if there are any websites which give details of film locations ? Thank you again for these videos. My wife and I , without fail, reserve the hour between 9 and 10 pm to watch two episodes every single night. I can honestly say that we know almost every word of every episode. It is a lovely escape from today’s world of strife.

Hi Michal, pleased you have enjoyed my video series, hope you've seen all 26 (or so) episodes. Meal Hill House is on a private estate, but you can get a good view of it from Scar Hole Lane. Most of the locations are on the www.summerwine.net/ website, click on Summer Wine Locations. Some of the locations I have used might not be on the map, but often you will find several locations very near to each other! (edit: typo)

I've watched the whole series now about 5 times and the thing that fascinates me and also shows the passage of time is the shop at the end of Nora and Compo's street. I'm assuming it is a real business as the Shop frontage changes over the decades. Just wondering if anyone else notices this or am I weird!!
@upstagedbyadog
@upstagedbyadog Год назад
If you mean the shop across the road, it was originally a motor vehicle parts shop, part of GW Castle garages. Then it became a ladies clothing shop and eventually I think, a golfing shop. The shop in the same building as Nora and Compo's I think was a book shop but the windows were normally hidden behind "fake" doors, to make it look like part of the garage. Nowadays its a "sustainable and ethical" gift shop.

This is Intake Lane / Scar End Lane / Scaly Gate / Hirst Lane (going clockwise as in the video) near to Jackson Bridge (White Horse pub) and New Mill (Christ Church) and Meal Hill House (three arched bridge).

I didn't see the sense in obscuring street names.
@upstagedbyadog
@upstagedbyadog 11 месяцев назад
Hi Nick. I think in some cases it would help deter people from turning up at the door of a home used in the show, if the street name is different, especially for locations that had not been used before. But some of the street names were in roads in the countryside, and not near anyone's home, so I share your puzzlement!
