The coolest part of how they designed the overworld in EoW is that the Gorons, Sea Zora, Deku Scrubs, and Gerudo all live outside the ALttP portion of the map, which retroactively would explain why they weren't present in ALttP. Such a cool detail.
Also makes the River Zora seen in LttP out to be more like tourists visiting the area. In LttP we meet them in the area that'd be just north of Conde's house on EoW's map (and they don't really have any buildings or anything, they're just sorta hanging out in that area). Their actual home is seen in EoW as a whole other river system in a new region east of there. Or... Actually, I suppose the river source area north of Conde's house is new territory too. Looking at the maps closer it kinda looks as if the river in LttP's time flowed through the area that is where Conde and Dampe's houses are now are located in EoW. It looks like where LttP had the waterfall that hid a Great Fairy fountain, the river feeding that waterfall tore a chasm through that section of the mountain, so now the river goes north a bit through where that Great Fairy used to be before you reach EoW's waterfall that's fed by the waters from Mt Hebra. Hmmm... The part just west of Conde's house with the bits of land jutting out on each side of the chasm... Is that supposed to represent where LttP had a bridge between the western and eastern sides of its mountain range? So Conde's house would actually be right in the middle of that eastern side of LttP's mountains then. I'd still place Dampe's house in the path of what used to be river in LttP though.
Seems to me like those ruins are specifically where the elder's house was located. The EoW ranch would be roughly where the couple buildings and a maze/race minigame were located just south of LttP Kakariko. And the remainder of LttP Kakariko would have been in that space north of EoW ranch / east of EoW Kakariko and obviously also west, southwest, and south of the ruins we're talking about. Oh, and actually as I wrote this I just looked at the maps again and noticed that in about the same spot as the fortune teller's house north of LttP Kakariko, that's where EoW has the carrot farm. Straight shot following the road east from there to the church and graveyard on both maps. Hm, looking even closer at it right now though... The elder's house was on a ledge up above the rest of the village, and the fortune teller was north from there on the same elevation as the elder's house. But these EoW ruins are at the same level as the majority of this area and the carrot farm is on the higher elevation. So that's a discrepancy from what I was just saying. But the little section of terrain raised to form narrow channels west of the ruins and the little depression south of the ruins are straying from the way this area looked in LttP too. Wait, there's a slice of the LttP map in this area that seems kinda erased from existence in the EoW map, actually. West of the castle and north of the enchanted glade on LttP's map there's... it was a blacksmith in the dark world, what was the light world version? Anyway, on the LttP map that house and some trees are nestled between the castle moat and a long narrow pond on Kakariko's east border. EoW has no such pond, just the moat. We've basically got that depression in the former Kakariko area in the spot that lines up with this LttP blacksmith or whatever. There's a pond missing from north of the road in between the fortune teller / carrot farm location and the church, as well.
Kakariko seems to relocate a lot throughout the various games while other landmarks are mostly consistent (though not always). Could mean that the inhabitants of Kakariko are somewhat nomadic and its people will frequently move their homes around and settle elsewhere, which would check out with Kakariko being associated with the Sheikah.
@@pockoclock228 The ruins of the Desert Palace and _ALttP_ Kakariko Village showcase that _EoW_ take place centuries after _A Link Between Worlds_ and _Triforce Heroes_ but centuries before _The Legend of Zelda_ mentioned in the _Zelda II: The Adventures of Link_ manual.
I think my favourite reference is the ruins where Kakariko Village used to be. Seeing how its slowly moved and the ruins of what is presumably the old one sadden me, but it was a nice nod to what once was.
It makes sense because in a link between worlds, the desert palace isn’t ruins and there are the ruins of old Kakariko as well. Also, it could explain that the gerudo were in the desert the whole time, but just the entrance to where they specifically inhabited was inaccessible for a great period of time.
Starting to think EOW takes place during the Decline Era of the Downfall Timeline. No one recognizes Ganon, and barely a few people know Link. And the TriForce is called " The Great Power ", and the map is basically an extended version of ALTTP. I might be wrong, but it would make sense.
I think EOW takes place after the Decline Era, after Zelda 2 Adventure of Link, which would explain why no one remembers Ganon, he has been dead since the events of the first Zelda game, and contrary to OncleS.A.M's belief, there are people in this game who know Link, but they don't know that Hyrule's history has had heroes that go by the same name. And Hyrule seems to be rebuilding itself, from inside Hyrule Castle instead of outside it.
@@LightStreak567 this could be an interesting way of seeing it, but Hyrule's landscape significantly changed during/aftet the decline era. Here its textbook an extended version of alttp and albw. Unless Hyrule's landscape doesnt matter, then I could agree. Also I said " almost no one " knows Link. Lol
@@LightStreak567 it's more likely EoW happens after ALBW, just before Zelda 1 and 2, since the geography still matches ALTTP/ALBW era's Hyrule, just with more ruins, suggesting some time has happened, meanwhile Hyrule during Zelda 1/2 became a tiny kingdom surrounded by wilderness after the heavy decline of the nation
@@Teknanam And you could always approximate some potential overlap between what LttP and the original game covered as well. .... Okay, looking again it actually might take a few big assumptions to make that connection, and I must have completely glossed over those when I got this idea into my head. If at some point between LttP and LoZ the castle gets destroyed and becomes a lake with remnants forming two islands, you could have the centrally located lake that's in LoZ. You'd also have to assume that the connection from the castle moat/river towards LttP's lake gets disrupted and redirected to the south. The desert east of LoZ's lake would be... the area that's north of LttP's East Palace (the area around the witch's hut)? And that'd make LoZ's Dungeon 3 be in about the same location as the East Palace? LttP's lake would be... offscreen? Or it would be the small pond that's on LoZ's map southeast of the LoZ lake area? The LoZ lost woods area would kinda roughly be LttP's sacred grove and the area just south of Kakariko, and all of LttP's Kakariko would have become LoZ's graveyard. And going with that, LttP's desert would be offscreen south of LoZ's lost woods, and this would cut LttP's lake off of the map as well. Instead of the water at the south and east edges of LoZ's map being a shoreline like I've always thought, they would have to be an new river feeding the lake and the northern shore of the lake. LttP's forest would be offscreen in LoZ, even though it ought to be north of the graveyard with the map breakdown I'm making right now. The LoZ map just focuses on the mountain range instead.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. I saw your twitter post so had to come check this video out instantly! THEYRE SO ALIKE! Its so neat to see how time has changed all the dungeons and made most of them inaccessible. Ruins are so cool to me. Always makes me wanna explore them! Thanks again for taking the time to do this! So cool
Good morning, found you through the Twitter post, this is some amazing work and it's so awesome to see many inspiriations from Link to the Past. Looking forward to future videos. Have a nice day!
Really disappointed they didn't have any sort of reference to Link's house from ALttP and ALBW. Even just having a ruined, abandoned house there with maybe a guard outside mentioning that it once belonged to a "legendary hero" would've been a nice easter egg.
This is a wonderful video. The funniest thing to me is that before the release of the game, people were vehement it wasn't the same Hyrule/world and that some of the similarities were just easter eggs. 😂
@@LetsPlayNintendoITA2023 Depends which Version of the ALTTP you play. In Japan Mount Hebra existed in the light world while Death mountain was in the Dark World.
I believe this game takes place between post Awakening/Oracles and pre Zelda 1. And while it has nothing to do with my belief, I like how the fully upgraded Sword of Might is reminiscent of the White Sword from the first game.
Could you imagine if they made a full on remake of A Link to the Past, using this version of Hyrule, having many more dungeons, and other additions like side quests?
Well since the Desert Palace and the Eastern Palace are in ruins, and Link's House isn't present where it should be, I think it's safer to assume that this game is also Post -ALBW. Hell, people have forgotten about Ganon and the Triforce. That implies to me that we are further in the future. Not to mention, it looks like Old Kakariko Village is in ruins, and they moved to the base of Eldin Volcano. Although I guess for me, my biggest woe then is that there aren't any ruins for the Tower of Hera on Hebra Mountain (Old Death Mountain). I think that would've been really cool. That and maybe an abandoned Zora Cove from where it used to be in ALBW.
@@user-sn1hi7my7x It probably is, and in hindsight makes more sense, but that's not the name I get when I look it up, or from the last time I booted up the game.
Thank you for this. I knew I seen some! LTTP has a special place in my heart and I just gushed and cried seeing the references to the game. Heck even the Zora make an appearance and I just squealed in delight.
I definitely think the tree stump model they use in this game was also meant for a hopefully upcoming Oracle of Seasons remake. Its near enough identical in shape!
Thank you for this! Since Echoes of wisdom's world is quite different overall, I often wasn't sure how certain places compare to ALttP. But here the similarities become really obvious 😊
There should have been an underground area or well, or at least a dig-uppable treasure, in that first place where you fall through to meet your uncle in LTTP. It's so crap there's nothing there in EoW!
I know the map is expended in Echoes of Wisdom but I truly wish the A Link to the Past part of the map wasn't reduced in scope this much, the road to Eastern Palace is so small, same for the desert part with the ruins of Desert Palace
@@GR8NE55The commenter was talking about the house that belonged to Link from A Link to the Past, the location of which is just an empty field in EoW.
Wasn't really Link's house. It was his dad's house. His dad was a soldier that died that night. Guess they thought the child was too. I mean the king and guards didn't even know who Link was. They just called him, "hero in a green tunic."
It was awesome to see familiar sites!! My only complaint is that they didnt added the Ritos to the Hebra region, they added the one random guy and thats it, leaving Hebra without even a town of its own. Felt very empty compared to the other regions.
Seeing the dungeons in ruins, that's neat. This game definitely feels more connected to older titles than BotW/TotK did. Really makes me want another version of the Oracle games, just not in this art style.. but being able to explore recognisable yet different landmasses in the 2D games is really fun.
Honestly, I’m okay with the Oracle games being in this art style, if it saves them development time, and I think it would. Although I confess that I really love this art style. What I really want to see them do if they remake the Oracle games, though, is put them in a single title. No more awkward code system for NG+, you can just travel back and forth between Labrynna and Holundrum.
@@idixal1836 I just find it hard to take this art style... 'seriously' isn't the right word, I like the look of it, but it's hard for me to feel like the story events have stakes or are actually important when the characters look like dolls with emoji faces. It suited LA because it was a dream, but the Oracle games I'd prefer something closer to the original if at all possible. I wanna feel like I'm playing a modern version of the story of those games, not just an interactive diorama of it. Definitely they should have both games on one title, though.
@@SilentVinyl Like I said, I don't mind the artstyle, I just can't see it telling a story as well as the emotiveness of older games like Wind Waker or Skyward Sword with cutscenes. I watch the opening with Link and what could've been a cool anime cutscene with him beating Ganon just looks... gentle. I can deal with it for a new game but the Oracles are my favourite Zelda games and I really don't want them to use this art style for it. It'd be like an old school Pokemon fan watching the first series remade with janky 3D CGI. I'd love something closer to a 2.5D look, or even just Mina the Hollower
Hebra mountain also has a few similarities with Hebra mountain/Death mountain from ALTTP/Triforce of the gods 1 with only some major differences near the top
I thought it was cool when I realized the desert temple from link to the past was in this game, but ruined. I wondered if there was any other Easter eggs. But eventually I realized the map is the same, and that's way less cool. At least it extends further to the left and right.
I think this is a cool way to have an homage to LttP's classic map, in contrast to just copy-pasting everything and have the same dungeons. ...Which sounds like I'm bashing Link Between Worlds - I'm not, I freaking love that game - but doing it AGAIN would have been a bit much.
From a friend, I heard that ALBW's Hyrule is closer to EoW than ALTTP's. You could basically crop an entire square on the EoW map and get a near 1:1 map from ALTTP/ALBW after all.
Nintendo love ALTTP, they release the game during 90's, we got a GBA Port during the 2000's, we got a sequel during the 2010's (ALBW) and now during the 2020's we got EoW, see you during the 2030's for another 2D Zelda reusing the ALTTP World with the story take place after EoW !
i honestly hope this leads to a remake of a link to the past with this engine. we dont make games like we used to and a link to the past was definitely one of those games.
You missed Hebra in EoW being what Death Mountain turned into. Eldin Volcano in EoW is most likely Mt Crenel from MC. The eastern end of Hebra also heavily resembles Veil Falls from MC, along with Jabul Waters and Seesyde village being in the same location that Lake Hylia was in in MC, complete with both locations having a forest to the south of them
This was a super cool video but I'm also curious as to who did your channels profile picture! It's so rare to find artists that are good at the WW style!
I just finished the game last night so this was cool to see. I noticed the map was the same but missed so many things like the decayed ruins that were present in a Link to the Past. I think we can safely say where this goes in the timeline.
Fun Fact: The Hebra Mountains actually existed in a LTTP in the Japanese Version. Its dark world counterpart was called Death Mountain. I guess the localizers changed the name due to the name Hebra being too close to the word Hebrew.
Thanks, I’m glad someone covered this! I spent a while looking for Tower of Hera after finding the other two light world dungeons, but I guess the layout with Death Mountain is too different. I’m curious if there is anything I’m missing there though.
They love "remastered" ALLTP. They release the game during the 90's, they release a GBA port during the 2000's, they release a sequel in 3DS (Between World) during the 2010's and now we got Echoes of Wisdom during the 2020's, I'm sure we got another 2D Zelda Project reusing the ALLTP world during the 2030's !
Certainly is easy to imagine, although obviously some major tweaks would be needed where things have changed in EoW compared to the same spots in LttP. Adding and removing various buildings. Reverting some changes in the geography. Then they have to decide whether to wall off the Goron area, Gerudo area, River Zora area, Seesyde Village, Sea Zora area, Deku Scrub area, and Suthorn Village again or whether to reimagine a bigger scope for LttP's story that involves all of them as well. And what would that reimagined LttP look like? Do we still get three pendants -> get the Master Sword -> get the eight maiden gems -> fight Ganon? (Main game's flow unchanged, just add new stuff through side quests.) Or do we get an extended storyline with something like 3 pendants -> 1st twist event -> 4 of some new macguffin -> 2nd twist event -> 8 maiden gems -> Ganon where maybe 1 of the pendants, 2 of the midgame macguffins, and 3 of the maiden gems are from dungeons in the new areas while everything else gets used for revamped versions of LttP's dungeons? (A mix of old and new where old fans of LttP won't always know for sure what's coming up next.) And actually, the starting point they'd have with the EoW map just gives them the light world map. To remake LttP they'd have to consider how all of it changes for the dark world map as well. What does that look like if they keep access to EoW's new areas?
I haven't played Echoes of Wisdom yet. But after watching this video, I really hope Nintendo will release an update or DLC, and convert Echoes of Wisdom into an A Link to the Past Remake. That would be awesome!
@@SilentVinyl Yes it would be so easy to do any of this without ruining the lore. Just make it a "Sleep" battle at the sword master. Buy the DLC, go to him and relieve older titles with a new spin.
So, where do you guys think this story is placed in the timeline? It's definitely the Fallen Hero, and it's definitely placed after ALTTP, which is the first game in the timeline (different placements, ruins, Link's House is gone).
I think Echoes still is after a Link to the past, Link Between Worlds etc. Some things that were taller are worn down a bits including the desert ruin.
Ok, so Echoes of Wisdom takes place after A Link to The Past, but what about the other games if the Fallen Hero timeline? Especially A Link Between Worlds?
Looking over both maps in that area I get the impression that the waterfall where a Great Fairy fountain was hidden in LttP dug a channel through the mountain extending that part of the river at the lower elevation to the north a bit, and while that was happening the waterfalls just to the east of the fairy's waterfall dried up and that eastern branch of the river dried up. (It's all flowing through where the fairy fountain used to be. None of it's flowing through that same area where we found the Zora in LttP.) Dampe's house seems to me to be built in the dried up river bed. Actually it looks like some terrain changed and blocked that riverbed up a bit as well, creating that dead end next to Dampe's house. Conde's house seems to be built in the middle of that eastern section of LttP's mountains, that area that was across a wood bridge from the first section of the mountains.
Random question but what’s the song in your channel intro? The melody is so familiar but I can’t place it and it’s killin me EDIT: I figured it out! It’s the ending of Pollyanna from MOTHER/Earthbound Beginnings!
I wonder if they initially intended this to be a LttP remake initially, but then decided to make something completely new, using the same base map with more areas. They did the right thing by using this map. It even makes us wonder whether EoW should be placed prior to or after LttP.
@@GreatGonzalez Very true! I'm not sure if that one ended up being a sequel or not, but looking at the maps, LBW looks like a bit of a regurgitation of LttP, replacing the Dark World/Sacred Realm with Lorule.
I wouldn't be surprised if Grezzo had worked on assets and layouts for a lttp remake around the same time as the LA remake. The echo mechanic started off as an expansion of the dungeon creator feature from the LA remake, before they decided it would be more fun to use echoes as part of gameplay rather than just collectible tools for dungeon editing.
Man, EoW’s map is VERY reminiscent of ALttP’s. I suppose not everything’s in the same compact locations though. Edit with fun fact: A Link Between Worlds has the exact same map as ALttP.
Dampe's house is more in line with where LttP has a stretch of river leading to the Zora. The witch's house would've been located in the spot where EoW has an enemy camp in the way on the path to Dampe's house. The witch was north of that building near the Eastern Palace where we meet Sahasrahla (a location that's also an enemy camp in EoW).
@geminisfl but story wise, the royal family doesn't know who Link is in echoes, even though they do in a link between worlds. The River Zora seem like they haven't been corrupted by Gannon, since they are friendly in Echoes. There are also a lot of NPC outside of the castle who act like they have never heard of princess zelda before in echoes. Maybe I'm off here.
@@jackb936I get the impression that this is a long time (like multiple generations) after Link Between Worlds, so it’s a different link and Zelda. So Hyrule was in peace for a while until the rifts started appearing again. As for people not recognizing zelda, I think the easiest explanation is that they just don’t pay attention to Hylian politics.
