Join me as I drive through the Trossachs to reach the secluded waters of Loch Drunkie. I explore the loch with my canoe and then cook a shore lunch on my twig stove.

Also meant to say; particularly liked the shots at 34 minutes. Just loved that wee passage of the canoe passing and scenery in the background.

I was a wee bit limited with camera angles for distant shots. The rain was the problem. Once I've set the camera up and headed off, I can no longer monitor the lens for contamination by water droplets. I captured loads of footage but most of it had rain drops on the lens, which distort the view. The shots you like were filmed with the camera positioned under a tree, so some shelter from raindrops.

Thanks Graham. Yes, a lovely place. It can be quite busy in the summertime but peaceful on gloomy days, hence my decision to paddle on a wet day. ATB, Dave

Great wee film, Dave. Loch Drunkie looks like a cracking spot. I don't know it so will need to explore some time. We do need to look at getting you on to some proper coffee brewing though!

Hello Martin, yes indeed, my coffee (and cooking) skills are somewhat limited :) The quality of food and drink is much better when Mo's along! I'm looking forward to the coffee festival. I'll pay more attention this year and am on the look out for suitable gadgets to take on my outdoor adventures. Loch Drunkie is a nice wee secluded loch in Trossachs and I can recommend a visit.

Nice video. My twig stove is very similar to yours. I modified mine by adding a heat reflector plate below grid with a wee air gap. Result is stove burns hotter, cleaner and much less heat goes down into ground or rock.

Thanks Torstein. Good tip for improving the stove. I've been looking at the titanium twig-stoves. They look amazing but are super expensive. Normally I don't worry too much about weight but I have a trip in mind where weight (and fuel source) will be a big factor. I probably won't be able to find a local supplier of gas so the twig stove will be my only method of cooking. The fuel source will be pine twigs and cones. The problem is getting the stove to burn hot enough at altitude. I'll try out your modification. I wonder if heavy-duty tin foil would work as a heat reflector?

I advise against titanium as it looses its strength when heated above 430C. Better reinvesting in same type of stove which you and I both own. Cheapest just now on eBay for less than £8 inclusive of postage.

I suspect a suitably shaped sheet of vermiculite wrapped in tinfoil might work. Will test tomorrow and report back.

Tested round sheet of vermiculite wrapped in tinfoil under stove. Worked well better than my heat shield riveted under griddle pot. Very light but a wee bit fragile and adds bulk. Allows placing stove anywhere and no damage to plants.

Does it have parking and a loo near by

Hi Mark, Loch Drunkie is accessible down the forest drive, which requires a ‘parking’ ticket for access. Note, the gates are closed overnight. You will find the access hours on-line if you search ‘three lochs forest drive’ (or something like that). You can purchase the ticket from the machine at the entrance. There are lots of places to pull over along the forest drive and usually plenty of space close Loch Drunkie. There are no toilets. ATB, Dave
