I think Maestro Knox is setting a precedent with his art, specially in the Viola repertoire. But this is much more, we can see how far is this (Mto Knox and Mto Power) in deep sense of art. They are using material from our current situation (empty hall represented the fact, that in most parts of the world, you cannot go to a concert, etc), to express something with a lot of complexity. Also in the Viola Repertoire, it was coming the idea of a “post-ideal Viola player”. People who can really show a lot of characters and a lot of timbral wealth (almost like a string quartet). And of course, we can see that Knox is using all from his already know material (harmonic, rhythm, bow technique, etc). So he got his own language, like a greatest artist. Bravissimo!!!
Marvellous performance ! I'm managed to survive third wave of Covid - 19attacked Tokyo while listening to masterpieces and reading various literatures of the world ,
Astonishing - beautifully crafted piece, brilliantly played. I was truly moved by this, and many other works played in lockdown by musicians of all denominations. Why quibble with the setting, Mr Nachmanovitch?
Beautiful piece by Garth and beautiful playing by Lawrence Power. Contrasting with the pompous way in which the video is presented - royal festival hall opened up for one person, at a time when innumerable fine musicians are playing performances simply, from home, including Yo-Yo Ma, Igor Levit, actors like Patrick Stewart, in solidarity with all those who are in confinement due to the cover-19 pandemic. Art is power, not because it is a high-class thing in an elegant hall, but because it opens the human spirit.
To be fair, I think the setting (a stage set for a quartet that only one person can occupy) is all part of the performance and the very composition. Great stuff.
