When I get on my Zoom calls I give a toy to my 4 year old and 5 month old to keep them busy while I do my work. Same reason why Modi is asking you to light up lamps, ring bells etc. Most of the urban society has nothing to do during a lockdown and such activities help cut boredom and builds a spirit of community from your balconies. It is a reminder that your are not alone in this crisis and essential for mental health. Keeping people engaged is important for any leader - in family, business or politics. Bored populace are like my bored children - will only disrupt work. The government is not doing this as a replacement for anything - hospitals are functioning, roads are protected and supplies are provided so that you don’t die hungry. It costs you nothing and no one forced you to anything. If you don’t want, just continue with your busy activities that you do on a Sunday morning. If you think it is primarily about symbolism, it is. This symbolism is how we can achieve coordination among billions of people. Refer to "Sapiens" for more discussion on symbolisms.

I would like you to talk more about the Nizamuddin markaz controvercy. It has affected me emotionally yet again. There are many unrelated videos and photos which are being circulated by andh bhakts which makes me feel really agitated thstbto what level they can go down even in this difficult time. Here's how I feel about the entire controversy: copying here from my fb post: I love my country and my fellow Indians a lot. Nobody is perfect and Indians aren't any exception. We have our strength and our flaws too. I do criticise and crib about the unreasonable and irresponsible behaviour of them many a times. And most of us do the same. I do get embarrassed by the way they behave at food counters at big international science conferences like the one that happened at BHU a few years ago. I do get embarrassed when they don't respect the queue especially when the queue is at a foreign airport. I do get angry and agitated by many serious offence they commit putting them in the "chalta hai" category. Having said that, my joy knows no bounds when I see them in large numbers at an airport after a long stay in a foreign country. It feels so good to be back among "your own people" whatever that means and how-much-ever politically incorrect it may sound. I feel the same when it comes to the community I belong to. I do constantly criticize, crib and fight with them (hoping for a change) about the things and behaviour I detest. If you see my extended family whatsApp group messages you will often find me in disagreement with them over many issues. This doesn't mean they are wrong and I am right always. It is just a difference in the outlook. They ain't bad ppl as a community. But like any other communities we too have our shortcomings. My father is a regular tabligh jamaat person. I do argue with him often about a lot of things we don't agree upon related to this. Having said all this, they are my own people and it is natural to feel bad for them just as I would have felt bad if Indians were targeted in a foreign country. There is no doubt that the guilty should be punished. If they have intentionally done what they are accused of, then it definitely qualifies to be a crime. And I do feel ashamed, embarrassed of my own people when they are wrong, to say the least. But it's not fair to generalise this and target the entire community the way the media and a good fraction of the public is handling the issue these days.

You can see people defending anything that Modi/BJP says/does to whatever extent they can under the convenience that anyone not "respecting" or abiding with the government is antinational, but these people were completely alright with all the Sardar and Pappu jokes cracked during the UPA. Dude. My dad started a whatsapp forward and I legit want to rat him out to the cops. Something along the lines of - everyone should turn off all electrical appliances when people hold out candles after turning off their lights. His explanation was there is a chance that when all people switch on their lights after 9 minutes it will cause a huge electrical surge that will kill all electrical equipment. Facepalm. Soo embarrassed!!

The reason is very simple: See this is a trick question. It's not about light anymore as corona has entered places where it shouldn't have been entering and light can't reach there. So here comes the masterstroke. The time is also carefully chosen as 9pm because that's the only time frame without any inauspicious period. As we know the virus came from wild animals (the Forest) and therefore we need something that replicates that. When a billion people light candles together the temperature of the atmosphere will rise killing the virus. A study by Dr. Sitaram of Harvard University has shown that exposure to fire for 9minutes can kill the virus. This is truly a masterstroke by dear Modiji." To make matters worse, I received this from a doctor. 😝😂

Reasons why Modiji asked us to light candles and lamps on the 9th: 1. Symbolism: representation of the economy burning. 2. Appeasement politics: lighting candles and fire is generally done by Zoroastrians and Christians (both covered under CAA) to appease them. 3. Early Diwali: Diwali is the festival of lights which usually gives a false sense of well being, which he thought the people need. 4. Burn/blind the VIRUS: there are rumours going on that the virus does not survive in higher temperatures, by lighting diya he thought the temperatures would rise that NASAs satellites would detect and hail him as a international hero. he thought that the light would let the virus to go blind and crash into each other to self immolate. 5. Intergalactic support: He thought that lighting up would send an intergalactic signal and the Extra terrastrials would find out our planet was in trouble and beam down to help us with their ancient alien medicines and vaccines. 6. Mass conversion: It was to convert the non believers to convert without their knowledge. Light diyas and get converted to Hinduism, your foreskin would magically grow back(though I cant confirm this theory as I am already Hindu, more inputs needed) 7. Cause early monsoons: Probable theory was that when everyone lightsup at the same time the water content in the air would evaporate and form rain clouds and it would rain heavily in india to wash away the virus and cure the masses magically. 8. Just to troll people: He just wanted to see how much can he actually push people to do stupid shit before they actually call out his shenanigans and ask for actual solutions.
