There are a lot of surprisingly good comic-book to tv adaptations coming out at the moment. But some... are not so good. Patreon: / studioersatz Twitter: / phd_pataphysics
For me, the dissonance in the Netflix show, was with the characters' reactions to finding out wild and supernatural things existed. Our dad is dead, let's go get ice cream. We live in a new place that is a bad ass mansion, let's not explore immediately or thoroughly. Magic exists, let's only use it for cookie cutter teenage hijinks. Demons are after us, we should probably still go to school and worry about who's kissing who. I think you nailed it. It felt like a CW adaptation of an R-rated comic. Excellent premise, juvenile execution.
I disagree, as a dark fantasy, this has potential. Like “the boys” it’s a dark fantasy done right. Netflix watered it down and ruined Season 3. There are so many more keys they could’ve had fun with, but….! This show was darker in theme not the teen drama with this in Locke and key. The graphic novel was way grittier than what is depicted. If done right this live action could be better but unfortunately Netflix has dry writing and made it lighter than what the story truly could be
Netflix ending of Season 3 made no sense. Gideon is forced back through the portal he created in Locke House from only a few keys he had so far acquired. Sending him back to his original habitat, that can't destroy him. It didn't destroy Ellie-Dodge when she was thrown through the Black Door portal. Later, the Locke family accommodates Gideon's demonic quest to obtain all the keys by throwing them through the same portal he went through. That's a major plot reversal. Keeping Gideon from getting the keys was the entire plot until then. So what if the portal in Locke House closes. Gideon now has all the keys and can use them to open a new portal merging the two worlds, which in the process destroys our world. So who wins? Gideon! But you wouldn't know it from the "Everything is wonderful now" wrap-up.
Thank GOD there was someone else who knew how bad this recreation was, you should review the free audio book that they released for the comic, I would honestly of preferred if someone just used it and the comic panels on some videos, maybe with a tiny bit of animation for moving stuff but still that would Be so nice
I was not aware it was a comic and I tried it out on Netflix. I was surprisingly drawn to its concept, even though it presented itself as a PG-13 teen fantasy sitcom. I finished the next 2 seasons out of obligation and was reasonably satisfied. I am astonished how dark, adult and amazing this story looks and now after watching this, I feel bad for enjoying the adaptation.
It GENUINELY upsets me that Netflix butchered the comic series it's one thing to make a faithful but not good adaptation but they barely even follow the books
Being a mega fan of the comics, I just couldn’t get into the show. I pushed myself through the first season with a hint of false hope that I’ll adjust to the more family-friendly approach but I just couldn’t. I didn’t even bother with season 2 or 3 cause I figured nothing was going to be different. Everything about the show is fair in terms of acting, casting, editing and design etc etc. but just the core structure and how they envisioned this show is just a joke when compared to the comics. I feel like changing the core structure instead of things like character arcs, personalities, and plot points is way more detrimental than the other way around. Take The Sandman for example. That show retained its core structure and characters while shaking up certain details like plot points, designs and amping up the characters’ personalities. That’s the definition of a good adaptation.
Watched the first season and only read the first issue. The show is interesting but the characters do and think the stupidest things, the only character that has some common sense is Bode. I understand that they are doing the "kids a smarter than you think" archetype, but that's no excuse for dumb decisions and reactions. The freaking key that can control people is so OP you would think they would use it to stop the Dodge, but nope.
While I do think the show could have been better, and the comic is better by far, I do think that a lot of what he mentioned in this video wasn’t worse, just different.
I agree with the first episode being boring. I actually fell asleep when I tried watching it. I couldn't get through it. Leave it to Netflix to mess up a comic adaptation. How exactly does one do that? I mean come on, the whole thing is already laid out for them!
Tbf, the Savini reference makes sense considering *actual* Tom Savini has a cameo part in the series, the locksmith. Not that I trust many Zoomers to know about him or anything else that was made in the last century, so I didn't really buy the 'fanclub' regardless.
16:36-23:57 it's one of my favourite issues as well not just for Nina's development but also because of how it takes advantage of the medium it's put in unlike the TV show
I think a better waste of time is to just read the source material I really like the graphic novels. But I'm not planning and didn't plan on watching the show when Fox released a pilot. Especially the majority of this tv series problem is the development hell it went through just to end up on a streaming service. Good video though.
I enjoyed the show and found it entertaining. I think if I had read the comics first I would probably share your perspective but it seems like you're just being hyper critical. Calling thier style of creepy "cringe", really isn't the best descriptor. However, I think you criticisms are valid for the most part. I would say though I disagree about the narration not fitting the medium. As Dexter did quite a bit of narration in it many years before Locke and Key came out. Granted it was Dexter narrating not everyone but it worked. Dexter of course wasn't a perfect show either but it was interesting. Based on how you explain it seems like it's best to watch the show and then read the comics if you're interested that way you get the most enjoyment.
After hearing about the difference from the show and learning the comic was free to read online I read the first volume and disagree with you on 2 points I find it to be much slower paced than the show and the mom to be much more boring than the show but other than those two I generally agree with you.
Jordan's a really boring character in the comics, but the show drops the ball regardless. There was room to improve and streamline as well as changing the "skin" key which has some really weird undertones and halfassed commentary by some nerdy white guy. I also find the ending slightly shits the bed in handling Rendell (no spoilers). I do recommend Locke and Key overall but it definitely could have been touched up in adaptation. Cutting all the violence and mature themes was a mistake on Netflix's part. It should have been 2D animated and rated R.
News flash. Adaptation is worse than the source material. Kind of makes me want to read the comics and makes me like the Netflix adaptation less? 🤔 Hmm. But in all seriousness great comparison though. Shocked that you have so few views and likes when you produce content this thoughtful. RU-vid is a harsh place eh? Must be the lack of anime girls..
I Did not like the Boys Adaptation.. First season was ok with the little changes. Then They just went crazy and changed everything . It sucks. The comic is way better.
I hated that series so much. I loved the comics, I discovered it not long before they announced the adaptation. I was really waiting for it, and I got cringy teenage drama, full of stereotypes and wooden acting (mummy Lock is specially horrible actress, if you put a manekin with voiceover it wouldn't made any difference). Why they had to fuck it up so badly?
This is weird. I had to change my comment because apparently certain terms are not allowed here... let's see if this works... The screen adaptation is written by someone with "strong political views". The female characters are better in anything they do, they talk down, lecture, and patronize male characters, except for the black teacher (because, you know, politics), while male characters are complete idiots and fail at everything they do.
