The KC 135 and the SR 71 do not burn the same fuels. This means that the KC 135 cannot use the fuel in the refueling tank to power its own engines.

It must have been so cool for the guy who mans the boom to refuel the Blackbird...I hear that the tanker had to go about as fast as it could and the Blackbird so slow that it was almost in a stall from going too darn slow in order to accomplish the refueling! What a machine!!

Because it is a ramjet, it has to go fast in order for the engines to keep working. Iirc, it doesnt need that for takeoff, but once it hits speed, it needs to remain at speed until it lands.

@Velereonics lol.. how does it take off, then? The J58 is not a ramjet in any way, shape, or form. There is no gas path that involves combustion that doesn’t pass through either the compressor or turbine.

@@calvinnickel9995 I looked this up again to make sure I had it right. this version that we're looking at of the SR-71 probably had a normal engine But with a modification that was basically a cone that would open once the pressure got to a certain level and then it would cause the engine to behave like a ramjet essentially, but it could take off under its own power. other versions and other ram jets currently in use take off in tandem with another, larger plane that gets it up to speed. if you Google exactly what you asked people seem like people don't have the same opinion on which version it is that you're seeing in any particular video. so I don't know. I just know that both actual ramjet versions were created and hybrid pseudo ramjets as well hypersonic missiles are essentially ramjet engines, And also have to be fired at speed, and a fighter jet would get it to that point so it's the same concept I'm assuming the disadvantage of having the hybrid one is that it's heavier and probably also slower because it's not a ramjet at that point just emulates one
