I drove to Kevin Kimball's workshop recently (February 2021) to check out the progress of my Lockheed Vega project. As you remember, we re-started the restoration in 2019, and Kevin and his son, Kallin have been rock n' rolling on it since - even through this crazy time! Well, let me tell you, I was extremely surprised, and pleased by the progress. Come along and check out what I saw. Part 1 we view and discuss the fuselage frame work. In Part 2, we'll talk about the making of the fuselage skin. Pretty Cool!

Absolutely fascinating. So complex for a 100 year old design. What a piece of art. Only bad thing about this video is that it is only part one. Heck of a teaser for part two. Hopefully it comes out really soon. Thank you so much for sharing your aviation journey.

Kimball is without a doubt a master! Absolutely spectacular what he's recreating for you. Is this the Vega that Dave Jameson from Oshkosh owned back in the 70's? Such a glorious aircraft! Next to the P-35, the Vega project is THE project that interests me the most. As you walked into the hangar with the rudder and vertical, I thought I saw a early Bonanza fuselage and what looked like a Clip wing Monocoupe wing; Is that correct? Thank you for your commitment to preserving these old airplanes and aviation history for all to enjoy for generations to come.

Love all of your videos - fully engaged! But can I just add that it’s a shame you sometimes allow your language to slip with “oh my friggin God” stuff. With sincere respect, this is not necessary and doesn’t enhance the video one jot. And for Christian believers like me it’s particularly jarring although I’m sure you don’t mean to offend folk. Keep up the great work and never lose your passion. I hope you manage to get FoF profitable again.

:49 Need a bigger airplane? 15:01 Good idea to get those parts out of your SUV. It would certainly mess up your day to be half way home, look in the mirror and see the parts still in your ride. (I've been there, done that, several times!) 28:59 I feel so old and out of date. You're doing a great job in saving these 'planes Kermit. Also three cheers to the people of the past who thought "That's a neat old aircraft to keep".

Will Post wearing a sea diving suit in the "Winnie Mae" discovered the "Jet Stream" by going for the altitude record at the time. The jet steam moved the Winnie Mae over the ground at over 350 mph!. Just ONE of the many discoveries and "firsts" with the Winnie Mae...Moses

Hi, I have a dumb but interesting question to ask. I have watched a number of videos relating to the rebuild of this plane, and today was offer one about the Smithsonian Museum setting their 'Winnie Mae' up for an exhibition in 2013 . Registration appears to be the same, but the Smithsonian one was fitted with long range tanks. I suspect that the Smithsonian does not normally sell off exhibits that appear to be in reasonable condition and of historical significance, so that begs a couple of questions. 1. Were there more than one Vega's named Winnie Mae (i.e. maybe one damaged and replaced with a similar unit painted up the same). 2. If not, presumably one plane is the 'real' Winnie Mae and the other is another Vega decorated to represent the Winnie Mae, so which aircraft is the original and which is the tribute plane?
@KermitWeeks444

Looking forward to your clarification.

Always loving a Kermit Weeks upload. Thank you Kermit. :) Edit: You know...that actually looks like it will be rather heavy in the long run. That`s a lot of laminated wood and glue. Add a heavy 300hp engine, six people, all the fuel, and everything else it`s amazing it could get airborne. I see the strength in all the bulkheads but longetudinally not so much. It just amazes me the amount of time, research detail and work that goes into these. I`m just a lowly retired car mechanic with a curious mind. God bless you Kermit weeks.

you can use the CAD 3D data you have on the metal fitting that is cracked - and there are mold makers/services houses that will 3D print you a sand mold so you can cast those parts - then machine them - that is really much cheaper than the old process of sand casting with a wet sand mold of the old days. Plus the cast parts can me stronger than the machined billet parts once heat treated after machining - and of course more authentic as well...

Some cool building skills. Hard to believe the original was from1927! So great that Kermit has the interest and the wherewithal to do this and Having the Kimballs there to make it happen. Wonderful aviation history being saved and shared. Kermit, each time I see you I have to grin! Years ago an old guy from Ohio came to see you about selling you some scrap planes he had collected. Walter came in and asked for you and was told that he had just walked right by you mowing the grass in front! He was not impressed! (as told to me by his son, Wally)
