When you first said you were outside the locks and would be going through them I looked it up on Google earth. It was a surprise when I found out that the waterway goes right through Loch Ness. I did not know boats could sail into there like that. Oh my god you’re an educational channel!! oh well I guess I keep my subscription anyways.

I Googled "Holmes" it's a Scottish name, literally meaning "someone who lives on an island surrounded by water". It's derived from a Viking word.
@SteifWood
@SteifWood 2 года назад
You can translate a 'holme' in Norwegian with an islets. We have 1000s of 'holmer' (pl., 'holme' sing.) here in Norway, and ofc depending on location, few have been settled (with propper houses) as they are too small and not much safe during winter storms. Also, we have 'øyer' (islands) and 'skjær' (rock), but ofc you can find 100s of different names/variations given our many dialects and 3 official languages. I'm sure we can find a 'holme' here in Norway Mr Holmes decides to stay during winter and not migrate to Sweden as he hinted (but who does that? move from Norway to Sweden?)

That was great! The people asking if you'd crossed the Atlantic, the other boats, the canoes, the country, the locks...it's all good! A few months back I went to the Ballard Locks in Seattle, they still have the manual set up for moving the doors there too. When you really need to open the door gate.... I'm looking forward to seeing the monster :-)

Excellent video of transit though Caledonian canal, well worth the the money. Scenery outstanding, we live in Scotland and visit the canal every few years. We love fort Augustus which is really scenic. We base ourselves at the Inverness end and use our cycles to travel along the canal towpath. You still have some lovely sections to come. You also have the rail bridge to negotiate at the Inverness sea lock end. How have the ‘midges’ been, they are the bane of our lives in the west of Scotland……..can really make life challenging. Can’t wait for your next posts as we still have loads of your journey to catch-up on. Enjoy living the dream, stay safe and favourable winds. Colin

When I went through Fort Augustus locks the second time there were some tourists watching. I got 2 of them to take my lines & they loved it. I let them come aboard & let their friends on a coach take photos of them & they had great fun. It made it easy for me. On the last trip When I got to the last lot of locks at Inverness I tied up to the barge you showed on your video. It is a holiday one ( there are 2 of them) & they took me through & I spent the time chatting to the guests.

Back in the 1980s it was even better because when you bought a pass you had 3 months to traverse the canal. Onr year I spent a very leisurely (and economical) few weeks at the end of a cruising summer on the West Coast heading back to my home port of Nairn in the Moray Firth.
