I agree splitting wood is good exercise until you get older and it starts tearing up your joints. When the time comes - a log splitter like this is a blessing!

Excellent, Glad you got the gas model vs electric. Given your there year round and heat only with wood this will make your life that much easier. Once you get to know the subtlety of how it works you will move faster through the piles

Funny I just split some wood yesterday. One of the things that I would recommend is NOT using the 4 way splitter thing (personal preference) because you will have more control over the size of your splits when you don't use it. Also when you run your ram out hold and steady the round being split it will keep it from riding up the base on you. I'll have a video out of me using the spitter within the week and you can see what I mean.

I am a faithful follower. My Huskee log splitter has been splitting Hickory knots for years and I found my weakest link is between the motor and the hydraulic pump. It has a rubber gear that gets replaced every year. I've heard good things about Wallenstein.
@Nortekj
@Nortekj 4 года назад
The most likely cause of you having to replace the coupling cushion is due to engine to pump mis-alignment causing it to constantly shift as it revolves. The engine is either too high or too low and offset to one side or the other, you will have to do several measurements to find where it is offset and use shims on the engine or oblong the mounting holes of engine base to correct the problem, if engine is already too high either have the bottom of the mounting machined to make it sit lower on the mounting base. also, you can test the spacing between the two coupling halves WITHOUT using the spider cushion by measuring the distance between them, and also use a tiny square all around those two halves to see if they are parallel to each other that will give you a fairly close idea as how thick of shim to use on engine base of how much to oblong the mounting holes if it needs to be offset to one side. Hope this doesn't sound too complicated but once corrected, you will never have to replace a spider cushion again.
@captpeady2176
@captpeady2176 4 года назад
@@Nortekj That sounds right, the last coupling I had to drill out to make it fit and I was slightly off center and that one failed after several days of use. This info is very useful Thanks...

A tip when using the 4 way wedge; if you notice a taper or bulge on one end of the round, put the larger end toward the wedge or the bulge up away from the bottom. This will help prevent the firewood from getting wedged tighter and tighter on the bottom as the wedge progresses through the round of wood. Not always because the grain can be all squiggly inside and have unseen knots, but, more often than not.
@digbyodell2924
@digbyodell2924 4 года назад
Oh, and cut yer rounds square or they can load up at an angle and if there's a knot hanging tough, when it pops, a piece of firewood can snap off the top like a rocket!

In Canada is very expensive, we paid only $ 999.99 whit free shipping, but is 18 years. We use this machine every year, never had problem. Now cost about $300 more. 37 ton cost 1599.99 with shipping. It is very god investment.You will be happy with it.

Hello Russell, great log splitter. Your beast costs 3223€ in Germany. A very good tool. No matter if vertical or horizontal, with 20000 Kg power, there are 196 KN. For such a small machine, a brutal power. Also very safe, the hydraulic stroke, is limited by the length of the hydraulic rod about 15 - 20 mm before the end. Saves limit switches, which often break down. Good simple concept, very well manufactured. You have bought something very good. Enjoy it. Greetings from Frankfurt and stay healthy.

Congratulations Russel, that seems to be a great machine, and it will make the wood cutting job much easier. I always were gloves to avoid splinters in my hands, and a few times the glove fastened, but not my finger inside.. be mindful about logs closing up again.... :-) Also we have a rule that the one person who puts logs on, also operates the lever, so as no misunderstanding and hurt to the other... who will only pick up logs. We chuck them into our hanger and put it in the stack when the hanger is full. Best of luck Russel! Thank you for sharing!

Grab a milk crate to toss the slivers of wood into to save as kindling. You will have tons saved up quickly to the point you are trying to give it away and end up just burning it. With the splitter making firewood easier it sounds like you need a project that would take advantage of it and the easy one to do is a wood fired oven for things like pizza and breads. This is the perfect build for an exercise ball dome pizza oven but would depend on what you want to haul in vs have local on the final look of it.

I took a full sheet of heavy grit sandpaper and glued it to the flat surface and the chunks didn't slide up and it lasted quite awhile. Anyway, no matter what, it does save you time and spent energy, you will get enough of a workout lifting the rounds.

I'm in love with "THE BEAST".....I wish I had something like that when I lived in my other house in the prairies... You can do all the logs you need in winter in one week... your body wil notice that.... your hands...your back...your bones...no more accidents...I had 10 or more...too much for me We can wish nothing bad would happen to us...but sometimes shit happens... You can put it vertical ---- NEAR THE SHED----- not walk too much split and stack the big pieces all in one..... and make a second split with the ones that need to do so... One thing I saw thats important when you cut the losg you have to do it straight if they are crooked th splitter spits them out

If You split to max. 4 inches You'll get a more clean burn in the stove (saving firewood). The 4-splitter can quickly make kindling, and some of it You can get 'free' while You split normally. Only split wet wood, it's the safest and easyest. And now You maybe can increase the length of the woodpieces? Or stop the piston on halfway?

Your beast is awesome. Like I wrote a month or so back get a 20 ton gas, get city girl and you and you can split and stack a bunch of wood real quick. A little trick to keep logs from potentially sliding up is to put the flat side always against the back stop. I split oak most of the time, then mesquite also. Get a good chair and sit down and get in a rhythm, she will probably split and you stack lol. Love your films always looking forward to the next one. A couple of things, I think we need to call that splitter the "Shawn James" because it is going to make fast work of that chore(and all tanks need names). The price, 3100 sounds like a great deal but besides the wear and tear on your body you can now do a chore that would have taken weeks to accomplish in the past in just hours allowing you ENJOY being off grid more. That's not too bad of a log splitter the only thing I don't like is the handle mechanism for forward and reverse. The one that I use as soon as you let go of the handle it automatically returns back to home position instead of having to push it back and put it in that locked position that's going to be a pain in the ass lose the 4 way split also single will work way better

Use the 4-way vertically with serious stuff. Use the single for everything else. Easier to control the sizes you want.

Russell, a covered Wood storage shed /lean-too that can also cover the Splitter would be handy. You could split wood on rainy days

I have the same unit, mine is older and says Surgmaster on it. I have yet to put a log in it that it didn't split. I like the 4 way Wedge, I should get one of those.

I'm torn on the 4-way wedge. I'm gonna try without and see how that works.

If you want equal pieces take that for way bit off and use the single. I would never use that for way bit with a 20-ton on oak you will wear that machine out. My dad had a 37 tunner with a two-stage cylinder and was certain hardwoods he would still blow hydraulic lines. One other thing sometimes wood will explode if it's super dry and and make sure you're prepared to catch wood headed towards your body LOL

I have never enjoyed the 4 way split. Personally preference is just a wedge.

BTW, you might check your manual to see if the cylinder will atomaticaly cycle through when you are splitting your wood. AND, after a few days you still have all your fingers!!!

Looks like a good machine but I see a couple of things I dont like. #1 the splitting wedge should have a removable cross wedge for splitting smaller pieces. #2 I don't see anything to remove a piece of wood if the wedge gets stuck.

That one piece came up on you cause you put the angled end towards the block instead of the cutter, always put any angled ends towards the cutting blade.

Good thing but in my opinion, it has no automatic splitter return, you need manually return it every time. Thanks for the video.

Glad you didn't buy one from Cambodian tire or princess auto and got Power-fisted. Not many companies take pride in their products anymore , wallenstein products are a bit pricey but I'd rather pay more for quality and reliability.
