#Whanganui #EastTown #KiwiRail DL 9066 exchanges an empty log train for a loaded one at East Town yard on the Marton - New Plymouth Line in New Zealand.
At about mid-morning, DL 9066 hauled Train 560, which consisted of empty log wagons, from Palmerston North to East Town. 9066 placed the empty wagons on a siding next to a stock pile of logs that had been delivered by truck from the forests north of Whanganui. 9066 immediately coupled up to a loaded log train and moved it to an adjacent road.
At about mid afternoon, three trains make their through East Town utilising the mainline and loop for passing each other. Train 565 has departed Castlecliff behind DL 9452 and is conveying containers bound for Wellington, many of which will be for export. The southbound 565 waits on the main for Train 534. This mainly empty northbound train is headed by 9423 & 9446 and is bound for a large Fonterra Dairy Factory at Whareroa on the MNPL.
After 565 has moved onwards, it's place is soon taken by DL's 9164 & 9170 with Train 535 which is heading from Whareroa to Palmerston North.
To summarize, one northbound train has headed up the main and two have headed south. Late in the afternoon, the locomotive our video is focussed on, 9066, takes loaded log Train 567 southwards when the section of line is clear.
The KiwiRail DL class was manufactured by CRRC Dalian 中车大连机车车辆有限公司 with engines from MTU. Introduced from 2010 onwards, they are the most powerful diesel-electric locos in service in New Zealand. The class represents the first order for a Chinese-built locomotive from a western country.

Now, big question: did those ducks make it thru the hunting season just gone? Thanks for that Mark - filled the gap nicely for what happens further on up the line when I see all of these trains pass by almost every day.

The Ducks stayed on the ground and did not seem worried by the train. I too value videos from elsewhere on the system and elsewhere on the MNPL. My plan was to catch the log train arriving and leaving and anything else that went through in the meantime. I was hoping for an 'off season' work train, but alas, turns out that happened on the following Friday. I was also hoping that the trains would cross at Ruatangata or Kai Iwi so there would be less 'mucking around"at East town and more consistant straight through movements. Tricky thing is to work out whos getting there first and which end of East Town to be at.
