As you can see on the screen, the bevel cutter and 8 ply cutter are mainly made of metal. These are not perfect, but work fine. However, the straight cutter is entirely made of plastic, and the rail guide has a gap, so it shakes. It is almost impossible to cut the material to the correct size using a straight cutter. In addition, it is much harder to cut the cutting surface of the material vertically. This product cannot be used if you want to do accurate straight cutting.
Hello, the 701-1 straight cutter was changed 10 years ago to no longer be a fixed blade tool so that the blade is exposed only when using the tool. This changed the composite make up of the tool to a nylon plastic however that did not cause any issues whatsoever. I am not sure what you mean by the guide rail having a gap. I made my mind up after much research to buy this mat cutter ... I watched this video and read the comments, I then went out and bought one beleiving the comments to be tripe ... and I was right! This is a really great mat cutter ... I have cut dozens of mats and "Art Bak" backing boards without any issue ... It does not over or undercut and it is still perfectly square. It is 1/3 of the cost of the mat cutter I thought I wanted and I'm glad I saved my money!
I just received my 750-1. I’m having trouble cutting through my mats and the corners tear instead of drop out. Any recommendations to get a clean bevel cut?
Hello. Make sure you change the blade often, always use a scrap mat board slip sheet under the mat you are bevel cutting, adjust the blade depth so it barely passes through the mat board and only scores into the slip sheet and stand so you are pulling the bevel cutter directly towards yourself. Hello. The 750-1 Simplex Elite comes with the 701-1 Straight Cutter that cuts up to 3/8" foam board and the #5000 8 Ply Bevel Cutter that cuts 8 ply mat board. Thank you.
I have to say i purchased a 760-1 Simplex Elite and i have yet to get a clean cut. Its always undercut or over cut. Terrible Design and a waste of money. Theres a reason they are so cheap in comparison to other mount cutters!
Jamie Williamson Sorry I did not see this post earlier. Have you called us for technical support? So long as you are using standard mat board for framing, have the blade depth set properly and understand how to mark the border lines and start and stop on them, there is no reason why this machine should not work perfectly for you.
Hello, Yes the mat guide does lock in position over the mat guide scale using the two black knobs that you tighten with your hands. See this starting at 5:26 in the video. This sets the width of the border you are cutting from roughly 3/4" to a little over 5". Any borders wider than what the mat guide will go to, remove the mat guide and mark the borders out manually using a pencil and a T-square. Thanks.
