⚠️ WARNING: LOTS OF VIOLENCE, LOTS OF BLOOD, LOTS OF SWEARING, LOTS OF SLICING AND DICING, LOTS OF EMOTIONS, LOTS OF UGLY CRYING AHEAD
even whilst editing this reaction i STILL had tears streaming down my face
I finally feel cultured after finally watching LOGAN (2017 dir. James Mangold) only several years late. I see now why this film is hailed as one of the best superhero/ X-Men films, and this certainly bodes well for Star Wars knowinng that James Mangold was at the helm. Fabulous performances all around...and I'm emo now.
Thanks for joining me in my quest to catch up on some Wolverine and Deadpool action before their crossover this summer! Up next for some comedic relief after this gut punch: DEADPOOL.
What else am I missing out on that I should be watching? Let me know!

@@judeless77 What? Terrible take. What you said is true about someone not necessarily being a parent just because they are biologically connected, but you are completely neglecting the story that had their relationship develop. He wasn’t just some dead beat parent, and she isn’t just some normal child that never knew her neglectful father. Calling the writing “desperate” is ridiculous. This was a fantastic ending.

A small detail: in the movie that comes before this in Logan’s story, The Wolverine, a character tells Logan what she sees of his future and she says, “you will die with your heart in your hand”. It sounds grim and dark, but in reality it ended up being that Logan died holding his daughter’s (his heart) hand.

Logan was dying of Adamantium poisoning because of the fact that his healing abilities were diminished. He'd been poisoned by the Adamantium all along, but when his healing factor was stronger, it could protect him from it. Some people speculate that his powers diminished with age, others that the GMO food the Doctor created to suppress mutant genes, might have been the cause. The clone, X-24 was an imperfect clone according to director, James Mangold. He healed smaller injuries quickly, but when he was impaled on that farm equipment, he needed that injection to handle all those major wounds. They also used a much thinner coating of Adamantium on his bones, which is why the bullet was able to blow apart so much of his skull. When Charles said that he remembered what happened in Westchester. He was saying that he finally remembered that he'd had one of his seizures and killed all of the other X-Men

On a deeper level I feel like this film does a great job of exploring masculine fears: seeing your father figure die, growing old, failing your children, not being able to provide, not being as strong as you used to be, leaving no legacy, and confronting your younger asshole self (which happens literally in the film).
@CatherineLaSalle
@CatherineLaSalle Месяц назад
Wow, really fabulous points!! You touch on something really important here: I feel like a recurring critique of the recent portrayals of beloved franchise characters in their elder years (Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, etc) is that they’ve been reduced/depicted as “deadbeats” (not exactly my opinion, but just some of the discourse I’ve seen online), whereas this laid out EXACTLY what Logan was going through without, in my opinion, running the risk of portraying him in an unfavorable light. It didn’t shy away from those things, which makes his state of mind/demeanor all make sense. Garners more understanding and empathy from the viewer, really great points!!

@@CatherineLaSalleWe got Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes the same year and those films made us cry. Xavier’s death hit me hard because I love TNG, and I was there when he debuted in Xavier during the first run of X-men in 2000. It’s a rare gift to get an end for a character that sticks the landing. Not because he went out in a blaze of glory, but because his final story was speaking to something larger.

Such a great point. This proved that a legendary character’s death doesn’t need to have fireworks and be this “hype” moment necessarily, but it can still be SO impactful

That scene is incredibly emotional. The moment when Laura calls Logan “daddy” encapsulates all the love, connection and recognition of their relationship, right in their last moments together. It is an emotional highlight that highlights humanity and the deep affection between the characters, making the farewell even more heartbreaking. Tears are a natural reaction to a scene so powerful and moving, which marks the closing of a saga and the sacrifice of a hero.

Fun fact the comic books featured in this film are all custom made for this movie. Hugh Jackman himself called comic book artist Joe Quesada with the offer of drawing a few comic book covers and pages for the film Logan. Dan Panosian a comic book penciller and an inker was also working on the film as well who just happened to be Joe's first inker while he was at DC drawing his first comics. So Dan ended up inking Joe's pages giving birth to the comics we see in this film. Panosian stated that these comics were designed to look like comics of the 1980s his personal favourite X-Men decade. The comics themselves within the universe is created by the *X-Men Comics Group* instead of Marvel Comics who do actually exist within the comics as well with Marvel creating stories around real hero's instead of fictional ones. We don't know who actually creates these X-Men comics in the movie but I could see someone like Cyclops wanting to promote the X-Men and have something Mutant kids could read as entertainment and relate to while also showcasing normal humans that the X-Men are here to do good. I also love that these comics showcase more comic accurate designs to what we see in the X-Men films. We aren't sure if the X-Men actually wore these outfits or if there solely a creation of these comics but I personally like to think that this Logan did wear his iconic yellow and blue suit while the other X-Men got more comic accurate outfits as well moving away from the leather look of the 2000s films. One of the kids even has a Wolverine toy wearing the iconic yellow and blue suit so yeah I like to imagine Logan did wear this suit during his X-Men days. Also side note I highly recommend X-Men 97 if you want more X-Men content. It's by far the best animated show on Disney Plus and in general it's just one of the best Animated Series of all time just 10 episodes each amazing.

Great reaction Cathrine. I love Logan having to be a dad. His line don't be what they made it hint that he doesn't want her to be viewed a weapon as he was...wanting a better life for his daughter. You are right he is a tortured soul...but that it what makes it beautiful as Logan never saw himself as hero..but to the children he was. The young boy holding the wolverine toy, the shaving of his beard to his iconic beard, the turning of the cross into an X. Shows how deep the children looked up to him. The "daddy" at the end just breaks you. :( Daphne and Hugh nailed this. To me of ALL the X-Men movies..this is my number 1. It was perfect. Dark but perfect. There was a line in another Wolverine movie that made the daddy line hit harder..when he was told "you will die holding your heart in your hand"...granted probably not what it meant..but god it fits.

I disagree. I think it's an almost flawless film, but there is one scene where the writing is bad, which takes away a point for me and makes it a 9/10 movie. The scene is with the phone; the recording that she made of that scene is terrible. They tried to find a way to give the exposition to the viewers, and they went with that weak narrative. In that scene, she is recording with that shitty phone, and the phone recorded audio through the wall to hear the bad guys talking. At some point, she was almost in their faces recording, which makes absolutely no sense, and then she was in rooms where there was no way she would have access, like the room where they were creating X-24, so yeah, the writing in that scene is horrendous, which takes away the film for being perfect. Incredible film, of course, but that scene can’t go unnoticed and takes a point for me. Spiderverse films are the ones that has absolutely no flaws, every filmmaking aspect is top notch, those two are probably the only 10/10 comic-book films for me.

Throughout the movie, Logan is driven by the need to protect and save Laura and the other children. In his final moments, Laura tearfully acknowledges Logan as her father, signifying the deep emotional bond they’ve formed. Logan’s death is a culmination of his journey to redemption. By sacrificing himself to ensure the children’s safety, Logan effectively saves them and, in doing so, finds a sense of peace and closure for himself. Laura’s words and actions at the end of the film reflect the realization that Logan has already succeeded in saving her by being the protector and father figure she needed. This mirrors the idea that Logan’s redemption and heroism have already been achieved through his actions and the impact he’s had on Laura’s life.

I appreciated the reaction, and how much you related to the characters. I’ve read literally very comic book that Wolverine has been in, and I knew before this movie that we were probably going the “Old Man Logan” type of storyline, it’s not the original storyline, but it’s own hybrid original content. Laura is a trained assassin and has been taught how to drive, fight, explosives, field craft, etc. She’s literally the perfect weapon and has been created as a child to be that. Laura’s claws are implants in the movie, and not all of her bones are coated in adamantium. So she can get broken bones and things from bullets, and it’s likely while Logan wanted her to get behind him when they were shooting. In the comic books, Laura’s mother was one of the scientists and they didn’t have the full genetic data for Logan, and so she used part of her DNA to create Laura (X-23). I loved this movie and everyone was crying in the theaters. It’s seriously one of the quietest I’ve ever seen people leave the movie theater. Great movie, and great reaction.

I use to have a big crush on her when I was really young lol, and I've always been a huge X-Men fan. Growing up with the movies was really special

This is a bittersweet movie. At long last James/Logan rests at peace. What you may not know or realize is that Logan was 190+ years old when he died. There really is no way to understand the pain he experienced throughout his life.

This movie perfectly captures what it's like to take care of an older person you used to be able to have great conversations with, but now their mind is slower and it's just frustrating. My mom is getting up there in years, so I feel like I'm not too far away from that. When you think about it, with the amount of ladies Logan has been with, it's pretty remarkable that he's only had a daughter with a woman he didn't even have sex with this late in his life at the age of 192.

what i appreciate is the gritty, realistic feel of the movie. it's a superhero movie but the director took the characters, their relationships and their histories from before this movie very seriously. if you followed xmen throughout the movies or even from the comic books, you know mangold got it. not wolverine and professor x, but charles and logan. no fancy light show and cgi extravaganza. i want more of THIS.

I’ll be honest, I was in my mid-40s when I first saw this film. I am now 49 going on 50 and I’m being straight up honest, I went into the film knowing that possibly Wolverine was gonna die. I was actually OK with it, especially towards the final battle with him taking on his younger, more vicious self! He went out like a boss and went out probably the way he wanted to. But when Laura was crying over him and said “daddy“, I will admit a tear left my eye! And I can say as a witness, I wasn’t the only man that shed a tear. I even heard a couple of dudes even weeping at that scene. Logan is one of my favorite X-Men films and Marvel films in general. But yeah, after you watched that film, you need a good comedy after that just as a pallet cleanser!

This movie had me in various emotions when I saw it in theaters in 2017 and Wolverine’s death absolutely destroyed my soul since it was the last X-Men movie with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine plus he’s been my favorite X-Men character since childhood and Hugh Jackman was born to be The Wolverine

Logan is the epitome of what a superhero/comic book story should be. Not rly about the fighting and the saving but an incredibly detailed character based story. What makes this movie great for me is the genious of the writing and to be able to see characters we've been so familiar with for years as superheroes be broken down to basic humans, being sweep by the currents of life.

It's a pg-13 version of Deapool 2 with extended shots and scenes with Fred Savage being held hostage while DP tells him the story of Deadpool 2 in a Princess Bride style.

Great reaction Cat as always . Don't worry your reaction is anything but lacklustre , Logan has exactly the same effect on me to especially the " Daddy " line at the end . I absolutely love this movie it is easily the best of the solo Wolverine movies and may even be the best of the X Men franchise though I still really love X2 but I think as Logan has a more mature content and is R rated this nails it for the top spot for me . I can remember watching the first trailer which used Jonny Cash's hurt and thought that it looked really good , everything about Logan works so well making it R Rated was a very smart move giving the fans what they have always clamoured for Logan going berserker on the bad guys , the violence is extreme and looks incredibly painful as it should . All the performances are top class Hugh , Patrick are amazing as always , Stephen Merchant as Caliban is great bring some dark comic relief , Boyd Holbrook is great as Pierce being very vicious and Richard E Grant is great as Dr Rice a very sophisticated villain but honestly the most impressive performance has to be Daphne Keen who is so so great and a real little spitfire . Logan is both heart-breaking with the incredibly emotional ending two major characters demise and its truly tragic seeing Logan and Charles reduced to this , the brutality really works so well . If you don't shed a tear at the end you must have a heart of stone . This is very loosely based on a comic story from 2008 Old Man Logan where Logan is responsible for killing the X Men and has left the hero life behind and lives life as a simple farmer when he is approached by Clint Barton - Hawkeye to travel across the US and deliver a package , traveling across a US that is controlled by all the villains who have wiped out the heroes the story is written by Mark Miller and is very dark and twisted in places especially involving the Hulk Gang inbred descendants of Bruce Banner obviously the X Men characters were owned by Fox at the time and all the Avengers were owned by Disney so hence why Logan is a very loose adaptation . Its a real shame they did not end the X Men franchise at Fox with this going out on a real high instead the final Fox X Men film was the very poor New Mutants , it will be very interesting to see how they go with Logan in Deadpool and Wolverine .

THANK YOU for admitting that you love XMEN Origins so openly. It's not as weird of a thing as some people who don't think for themselves make it out to be. It's not one of my favorite movies, but I sure do like rewatching it. It also has some pretty darn iconic Logan shots. Rotten Tomatoes should be avoided like The Plague by everyone. WHY WHY WHY give a shit about what strangers thought about films? They've got NOTHING to do with you, the viewer. Young people need to always taught that don't have to dislike a movie just because it's critically less well received and that it's okay and I SAY should be encouraged for people to like things based on their OWN tastes, not what people tell them is bad. People are not all supposed to like the same thing. That's how autocracy culture is created. Be original people. Like what YOU like everybody, not what your friends or The Internet bullies you into thinking you're supposed to like and dislike!
@CatherineLaSalle

This movie hit the hardest when it was supposed to be the "end" of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. After 17 years of movies this really was the end of an era. This movie especially hits if you've seen Logan's key outings (the good ones) like X-Men, X2, The Wolverine, and Days of Future Past. I still love The Last Stand and Origins but they're not as key to the story. Apocalypse and First Class are also still pretty fun but Wolverine only makes cameos.
