Logan died for his daughter. So she could get to a safe country and have a better life. And that's what he told her before he died. He told her to be better than him and enjoy her life, despite your past. Which he wasn't able to allow himself to do. Logan died for everything that he had left to live for. And he was at peace with his decision. Self sacrifice, one of the highest expressions of love. He never said he loved her, he showed her.

I didn't see it so much as the X-Men losing... the ending I thought was strongly hinting that what the X-Men represented was going to live on and be represented by a new generation. The idea of a group of young mutants all looking out for each other like a family was essentially Xavier's dream and goal right?

Grace, I love you but I have never disagreed with you more. I thought the third act was beautiful. Wolverine died saving those kids and essentially carrying on the torch that he reluctantly took from Charles after his death. He died doing what any other xmen would have done- protecting the potential future of mutants and humans living in harmony.

I like this review and the way you presented it, but I couldn't disagree with you more about the final act. I was so, so happy that there was no bullshit BvS 'dirt rising off the grave scene'. It was a ballsy ending, and guess what? If you felt unhappy at his death, congratulations! A piece of art made you feel something. Sometimes what makes a movie great is that it punches you in the gut, instead of making you feel great. Also he didn't die for nothing! The movie kept throwing in evidence that Logan was on the verge of giving up everything, even up to him openly expressing suicidal thoughts. In the third act he found redemption, remembered who he was, and died heroically.

Logan died fighting to protect his daughter because he loved her. Just like any loving parent would do for their children. Also, the young mutants sticking together like a family which is what Professor X and Magneto wanted all along. Lastly, if you truly are a comic book fan then you would've mention the "New Mutants" series that was a spin off of the X-Men after the X-Men.

I disagree with some of the points in this review. 1. Logan dying, it made sense for me since he was already dying from the adamantium in his body. I think he sees the new mutants as a way of their race to live on in Canada. Also, I think he really started to feel like a father to X-23 and gives up his life in order to save hers. (The movie could go in a different way but I liked this ending where he dies in one final act of preserving the mutants (like Xavier wanted) and also got a "real" family outside of the X-men. 2. The kids are refugees and not immigrants. BIG DIFFERENCE. They are literally fleeing for their life and I cannot see anything remotely SJW with helping refugees. 3. The kids killing without remorse. It makes them feel like experiments and we can't forget that they have had almost no interactions with people except for the lab-people. They are not good soldiers since they won't kill without any reason but they are still severely damaged by the experiments and upbringing they had. I share your opinion on everything else and i really liked the movie! Thanks for the review :)

Wolverine's death in this movie is what I should have felt when Superman died in BvS but I didn't because Zach Snyder and Warner Brothers didn't establish Superman enough. Henry Cavill as Superman was in 2 fucking movies before he died. Fucking 2. Hugh Jackman has portrayed Wolverine in 9 movies. Granted not all the movies were great but still 9 movies (17 years) dedicated to this character is impressive. 20th Century Fox had more than earned the right to do the death of Wolverine. Warner Brothers on the other hand had not earned the right to do the death of such an iconic character. And yes I know that Superman is technically not dead (and that also bothers me because it really shows the lack in confidence over at Warner Brothers) but still.
@AbrahamSuneet
@AbrahamSuneet 7 лет назад
Sean Kelley I agree. That my problem with warner brothers supes, they haven't really established him enough for me to care. Especially in that short period of time. They did make some very good moments( one of my favs being the court room explosion scene, where supes is of course left unharmed by the explosion and begins to reflect. The learning to fly scene, and Jor els speach) They really should of took a look at All star Superman it really fleshes superman out. I actually liked Superman returns more than i like man of steel and thats saying something(mainly because they did a good job on fleshing out the character and making us feel for him).
@conduitofthegospeldarrellb9154
Sean Kelley spot on. They are trying soo hard to play "catch up" that they aren't flushing out there characters properly... and could someone PLEASE give Henry Cavill a script were he actually acts and isn't a glorified Abercrombie model!! He's a really good actor! Give him something to work with!
@seankelley155
@seankelley155 7 лет назад
I don't believe he should have survived. It would have cheapened the movie. To see this man give everything he's got (his very long life) into protecting not only his daughter but the next generation of mutants is some pretty powerful stuff. His death only solidifies him as the hero we know he is.

He didn't die for nothing!! He died for the kids he died being an x man for the last time. We wanted Arnold from t2 to survive at the end(although he was missing an arm) but he sacrificed himself so that the others may live and that's exactly what Logan did. He chose to take all the healing green liquid in one shot which he was supposed to ration for a while in order to save the kids. To be wolverine one last time. It was sad to see him die, but he didn't die as Logan, he died as wolverine. The message I get is no matter the adversary even though they may win, you gotta stay true to yourself and keep fighting for what you know to be right.

But all X-Men comics do have an underlying discussion about issues plaguing society. That's why they resonate. Maybe the director wanted to show that. Besides I will never forget the image on the news of South Americans crossing a river (making their way to North america) and there was a man with his baby just floating cause they'd drowned but the others had to keep moving on in this treacherous jungle. Haunting stuff real life is.

FCU no. Shared universe sucks really. All Marvel's movies are cohesive...and look at them! All predictable. All the same. Like, you can't kill a character in one movie, because he can be used in another one and shit like this. There wasn't real stakes going on on Civil War. All that fight in the end and it was so obvious that everyone was going to end up alive and well, and...I mean. It's such a huge creative block. If FOX give up on trying to be like Marvel, get rid of Kimberg and Singer, they should just do the movies and their sequels in separate universes. Logan and Deadpool are such good movies, and a breath of life among the flood of "Marvel Formula".

Very detailed review, Grace! I enjoyed it. A few points: Yes, I think Xavier's seizures did produce a variation of the telepathic "mannequin challenge" that he was able to use in the previous films -- but because he wasn't fully in control of his powers, the victims were both aware of it AND unable to breathe! Caliban reported how freaked out he was when it happened at their original hideout. Also, I think the kids were so emotionally cold because Dr. Rice wanted it that way. They were bred to be weapons -- which is why the staff was told not expose them to social things like birthdays, nicknames, and the like. Unfortunately, his methods were somewhat effective as we see in the end. Likely, X-23 will provide them with something of a moral compass in later adventures. Keep up the great content on this channel, Grace!

Nice review, Grace, but I must say I completely disagree with your third act problems. First off, I'm surprised that a seasoned reviewer like you was suprised by Logan's death. It was pretty obvious from the tone and all the behind the scenes comments by Jackman that this was always supposed to be "The End". I for one would be disappointed if they didn't have the guts to say, this is it --this is how Wolverine dies. It may be hard to predict how Fox is gonna go forward with the X universe (since structurally it's such a huge mess right now), but from the beginning everybody knew this was it's own thing. And they just reintroduced the main X-Men in Apocalypse, so it would be really weird if they didn't evelop them from that end (I would probably prefer a reboot --without Simon Kinberg, please--, but this seems unlikely right now). As far as the corporations winning... well, this is a distopian future, what did you expect? Do you know any distopian future where the evil governments and/or corporations didn't win? Maybe the problem is that we're pretty much already living in a distopia ourselves, so the point hits just too close to home. In the Force Awakens I think the problem comes from a completely different origin. And as much as I love that movie, J. J. really screwed this aspect from a narrative point of view. Because in theory at that point the tables are turned. The new republic (or whatever it's called) IS the status quo and the First Order is the group that's trying to rise above that. But because J. J. had to make the movie so ridiculously close to the OT, in the movie itself the First Order feels just like the Empire, when they actually are not in that position at all not yet, at least). In closing (sorry, this has gone too long already), I must say that when I was watching the movie and they said something like "this couldn't be done in the US and in Canada, so they went to Mexico" I immediately thought "well, that's offensive" (and no, I'm no SJW) -- because apparently, Mexicans have no laws or just don't care if you're gonna do cruel experiments on children. When you brought up this subject I thought, yeah, that bothered her too. But no, you actually thought that THAT was cool. And what was not cool was that mutants have to run away from the US? Because you're considering them only as immigrants, but they were being chased for being mutants (or "patents", actually, but you get my meaning). And in the X movies, the US has almost always been portrayed as mutants unfriendly -- something the X-Men usually are able to revert by the end of each episode, of course. And we all know how Fox is all about consistency in these films... ha! (though it's nice to have some every once in a while).

Mega MovieZ Well, Dr. Rice, who was the big villain behind it all, didn't die. Did he? (that's an honest question -- my memory is terrible). Besides, most of the bad guys who died were Reavers and some henchmen who weren't really "the corporations". And when everybody dies, both heroes and villains, I'd say the bad guys have won -- evil has, at least. But I was actually just commenting on Grace's remarks about this. You'd have to ask her what she really meant (or maybe just rewatch the video).

Logan died cause his plot point is about to stay and to love. Thats why he is dying. He states he knows why he is dying. But he is always on the run from himself and others- mentally and physically throughout the movie. Prof. X wants him to experience love and to stop running to stay. and Caliban also makes mention that he has to fix something inside. Him dying is closing the plot. cause they wanted the kids and Laura to go on without Logan. If he lived, he would have had to go with Laura. As he felt love and peace with her in the end. and he didn't need to run anymore.

I personally think they should have at least given Laura some more lines, she's almost completely silent and the bit she did talk was half in Spanish which keeps you from really getting invested in her especially when you don't know what she said. Being that I speak Spanish the lines she said were powerful and they should have at least subtitled it. When they were in the car he asks her why she never talked before and she starts screaming in Spanish, (this is a rough translation because it's been a while since I've seen it), " How do you expect me to talk to you when every time you talk to me you insult and scream at me and you're intending to abandon me."

Hmmm. I kinda disagree with the third act being so weak. For me at least it was great. It was the weakest part of it yes, but not nearly as bad as you make it sound. Probably because the demoralizing aspect didn't affect me or hit home with me. I thought the kids were cute specially Lizard Boy, and the way they used their powers was great. They were made to be killers. They were trained to be killers and they were killing horrible people that hurt them and were persecuting them. They were defending themselves. And X-23's performance when Logan dies was heart wrenching, specially when she call him daddy. And she knew him for what? Two weeks? Of course she isn't going to be all too devastated for too long. She needed to get out and follow the kids. I get it that the immigration is a big sensible thing nowadays but this is a more artsy type of film and they were clearly going for their vision. And whats art if not a mirror of its time period? I respect and admire the choice.

Wow are you overthinking this movie. Logan's narrative is about redemption. Xavier was the last part of Logan's humanity and that is why he was committed to protecting him. But then when he finds our about his daughter, Logan sees his younger self in him, which is why he rejects her at first. But then when X-24 turns up Logan gets to face his younger,more volatile self, and protects X-23 with the hope that she will grow up with the values that he and Xavier tried to install in her. And the ending wasn't without hope. The fact that these new mutants are now released, they can reproduce and regrow the mutant population. And they killed off the leader of the corporation that was responsible for the experimentation, so now the young mutants have a chance to win the war for them.

From what I understand: Xavier's power can shut down the part of the brain regulating involuntary functions: lung, heart, ext. : which is what causes the real issue. Only those with powers like Wolverine could survive as regeneration would automatically counteract the effects of suffocation and so on. In addition, if Xavier stopped someone moving fast enough or took over control of voluntary functions while people are in precarious situations...

I didn't understand this power in Apocalypse when Xavier paused everyone in the CIA office to see Moira. Can people 'see' him wheel by, or are their brains frozen so they see and hear nothing? What about people in mid-stride or drinking something? I'm sure in that scene someone in the background had an object freeze in mid-air with them (could be remembering wrong). It seemed to be more time being frozen than just people being frozen.

portantwas I thought that as well until seeing logan. in a scene where xavier is having a seizure and everyone is stopped in their tracks it LOOKS like time is frozen and only logan and x23 can still move freely(not easily though) but as logan approaches Charles and the mercenaries with guns drawn on him who triggered the seizure to begin with were VERY aware of what was going on around them including logans claws moving very slowly towards them, they just couldn't do anything about it

What I can't get around, is that the one of the reasons for Days of Future Past was to "right the wrongs" of the original films, to please the fandom and "save" the characters which died... shoot forward a year or two... and they're all potentially dead again anyway? What was the point.. no more chance for Jean to shine again etc. But then I realised, it's very subtle but kind of poetic, Beast (in DOFP) mentioned a theory in time travel about the ripples in a river... how you can create ripples in a body of water, but the course always corrects itself. We're led to believe that "enough ripples, you can change the tide entirely" at the end of DOFP... but has Logan showed us that actually... nope. The sentinels didn't kill all mutant kind, but [spoiler] then potentially did? Just thought it would be interesting to point out! The X-Men franchise for me has always been my favourite "superhero" series!

I don't understand where you think they lost. Nobody won, nobody lost. Logan sacrifices himself in order for them to cross the border. I agree the ending isn't a happy one, with Logan as well as not really knowing who exactly is waiting beyond the border. But I didn't see that as a loss. Just not a happy ending. Nobody wants to lose Logan but I though it was a poignant way for him to go, however brutal it was. And it was brutal, you don't leave this movie with a happy feeling.

Another subtle scene that I really liked was near the beginning when Logan is back at his compound and he has to manually extend the one claw from between his fingers because it didn't extend fully - so he pulls it out and there's just all this blood dripping down his hands and then there's a cut to him bandaging his hands after. It just goes to show how much older and weaker he's gotten and how the mutant healing factor ain't what it used to be for him. So beautiful!

I'm not sure why a downbeat ending constitutes a third act failing - I thought it was a logical, satisfying conclusion to this most atypical superhero movie, one that plays out like a revisionist superhero movie, like a 70's western, and if you don't think the hero dies at the end of westerns, I give you McCabe & Mrs Miller, or Ulzana's Raid. In fact, the great strength of Logan is its relationship with the other X-Men movies (or superhero movies in general) which is that of the revisionist western with the traditional western - The Wild Bunch as opposed to Rawhide.

Awww, you got all teary eyed. It was tough to see both Professor X and Logan die but it was the end of an 18 year and what 8... 9 film run. It's unfortunate but, the end comes for us all, eventually, and this was the part of the story where their end was told. Looking at it that way, it would seem weird if all parts of their story was told except the end. So I'm happy we got to see this bit, because it is so often not told.

I really enjoyed the creative decision to give Pierce such a grim and horrifying death at the end from the hands of the children. It really helped signify one of the major themes of the show; that violence has a dark and cruel price even if done for the "right" choices. Choosing to portray the darker side of the children's moralities added complexity to the film's themes which only heightened it for me luckily.

To the point that this movie is demoralizing I have to say that it is not really. I mean the set up x-23 and the other kids and I rather have Logan and Xavier die like this then some bullshit happy ending. I mean it made me sad, but it is the right choice regardless. Also he killed the dudes from the cooperation so he actually kinda stopped them. And If you want to take it as a comment on companies having too much power it is more a warning to do something about it now before its too late.
@Jefe86
@Jefe86 7 лет назад
To touch on a couple of point I (slightly) disagree on/would like to add to: Xavier's death is made all the more poignant in that he has a moment of enlightenment. He acknowledges how great it was to have a night in a home and how he didn't deserve it. He remembers what happened in Westchester and realizes why Logan refused to tell him and why he was always kept drugged: he experienced the pain for a minute that Logan has carried for a lifetime and got it. Logan's death is fitting in that he died in the same way. Moments before breathing for the last time, he came to realize what it is to have a 'home' per day and experience life in saving the daughter he now had. For the first time in his life, he had a true reason to live, to fight, because Laura, unlike Gene Gray, was actually his biologically and he could, for the first time, feel the kind of incomparable love one feels for their children and the sacrifices one is willing to make for them. It is very fitting that both characters die finally understanding the other and 'getting' them after a lifetime of trying to be on the same page. This was a fitting and truly appropriate way of sending both into the sunset, better than letting them live. Lastly, on the kids not being personable. I agree. I also feel that this movie makes a commentary on traditionalism vs realism. The nurses are with these kids from birth and treat them as children, even though they are being trained to be weapons. They have a traditionalist view of them, blinding themselves from the reality: they are being brought up protected from outside influence and without emotion. That is what you see at the end of the movie. While I do agree that they aren't very likable, this is a byproduct of how they were created and brought up. The facility had no intentions of creating children, but rather weapons, highlighted in the exchange where the head 'doctor' says to Gabriela that she should see them as objects instead of humans. This is the reason they seem so stone-faced. At the end of the movie Laura begins to learn emotion when she acknowledges Logan as her father and holds him, almost nurturing him, as he dies. In this way, she has been given purpose in life and will, like Logan before her, lead the X-Men of the future. She will avenge her father, and will use her first real sense of emotion as a driving force towards the future, because it is an emotionally powerful moment in her life. The kids, being exposed to the outside world for the first time, will slowly learn about life, begin to feel emotions and finally go through the normal growth process and become more humanized. I believe that if this storyline carries forward, we will see more developed individuals who are still working through the tortures of their past but willing to avenge them and fight to put it behind them.

Quick question: 'Logan' is supposedly set years after the happy ending showed in 'Days of Future Past'. However, by Wolverine and Professor X referencing the Statue of Liberty incident (X-1) and Wolverine having the Japanese sword from 'The Wolverine', does that mean events from the original trilogy did happen?? Thoughts??
