This one's for all you media composers who want to speed up how quickly you can write for the ways in which virtual orchestral instruments can be played. Strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments can be bowed, plucked, blown, played with mutes, struck, stroked... the list of different articulations is frequently extensive. Articulation Maps let you set up a 'preference file' which can then be used within all of your Logic projects, creating a grid of key switches. These take each articulation and set it up for its own mapped key, meaning that you can select a whole range of notes and assign a playback style to them from a drop-down menu. This is a great way of moving between Legato, Pizzicato, Staccato or Muted playing styles without the drawbacks of using key switching, the 'old fashioned' way. Jono is ready to explain all.

Thanks Jono - you've just saved me $95 to buy an articulation list for Logic/EWHO. Here I've been able to copy you in real time and enable me to take my huge scores written with a different track for each articulation and start compacting them down to single/divisi tracks. Fantastic, thank you!

Thanks for explaining the Articulation sets. I've been running into memory errors due to my extensive huge scoring needs. This solves it. I can use a new template I can set up and don't have to worry about all the different short articulations, legato, longs, spiccato, et al for each sub folder , its all gonna be on one line. Much easier to deal with logistically.

Good video. I am on an older version of LogicX, version 10.5.0. The problem I encountered, a real bug, may be solved in newer versions. of Logic, but I do not know if, and when, it is solved. Ok, the problem: When you try to 'save as' an articulation set in the location 'music/audio music apps/articulation settings', that is the location where the articulation sets are stored, when you try to save your set(s) in folders inside 'articulation settings', it may happen that nothing happens, in other words, the articulation set(s) is/are not saved. After many frustrating attempts I decided to skip the folders and to save the articulation set directly in the map 'articulation settings', in the root of that map, and that worked! The set was saved. So the bug in my logic version is that articulation sets cannot be saved in folders inside 'articulation settings'. Afterwards, you can in the finder move that saved set to where you want it, inside whatever folder within the folder 'articulation settings'. You can of course save all your articulation sets in the root, but if you have many libraries and may articulation sets that you want access to, an organized folder structure within the map 'articulation settings' is a good idea, so that in the track inspector of a new project, an articulation set can easily be found. Unless of course you have predefined all the articulation sets in a template. I repeat myself: in later versions of LogicX the bug I mention here, may be solved.

Hi Harry, thanks so much for bringing that to my attention - that's incredibly frustrating, though it is useful that you've found a workaround. This does seem to be a bug that Apple have now fixed as I'm certainly able to 'Save As...' to sub-folders within the Articulation Settings folder in more recent versions of Logic.

Aaaand... Jono Buchanan, once again, serving exactly what I need when I need it. Thank you so much. Just started working with IK's MODO Bass 2 this week and thought, "Where is a video of JB explaining plugin articulations when I need it?" Quick question if you've got time (and maybe this will be covered later) - in the ominous window under the output tab > 'Activate Multiple Outputs' - when might this be used? In other news, I checked out your other compositions on Apple Music - great! I especially loved "The Onward Journey" and its play with time. The multifaceted intro percussion in 4/4 (8/8?) time with the rattle on the 7s, and then the keys coming in overtop in 6/8. Brilliant!

Dear Mr Jono! Love your videos. You mentioned you created one for building templates - I am about to start a large project for Spitfire/Logic and animation and need to make a template with articulation sets and instruments! There will be 30 or so scenes… Anyway I cannot find the template instruction video that you mentioned in the articulation set video. Can you point me in the right direction? Would be great if it was also polyphonic to play different articulations at the same time
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 5 месяцев назад
Hi. I think most libraries are configured to play only one Articulation at the same time as - usually - that's how orchestral sections will prefer to play, with everyone in the first violin section playing Legato or Staccato or Pizzicato, for instance. But you can absolutely double-up on Articulations if you want to. Set up 2 instruments with the two Articulations you want to play at the same time. Then select both tracks and put them into a Track Stack. If you then select the Track Stack and play notes on your MIDI keyboard, both tracks (and therefore both Articulations) will play back together. And you don't need to stop at 2 Articulations if you want to create a monster patch with 3, 4 or 5 Articulations playing together. Just add more individual tracks to your Track Stack. I hope that helps!

Does or would the articulation mapping work for key switch instruments so the articulations can be mapped to the notes? Instead of having to start back at the beginning of the phrase for it to be triggered?
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic Месяц назад
Hi Rob, yes that’s exactly what Articulation Mapping does. Effectively, it gives you a chance to assign a key switch to every single note of a phrase, meaning that you can start playback from anywhere and the correct key switch will have been assigned to each note. Thanks!

Why can't I see the piano at the bottom of the BBC orchestra patch in my logic session?
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 8 месяцев назад
Hi Sofia. The interface for that plug-in can be expanded/collapsed by clicking the icon with the two arrows facing each other in the top right-hand corner, next to the instrument name. I hope that fixes the issue for you.

When using this method, Will the key switches be unavailable in the midi editor? To avoid accidentally hitting a key-switch when transposing a chord progression for example? Sorry if I missed the answer somewhere in the video.
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 2 месяца назад
Good question. The key switches remain active - the Articulation Map effectively IS a series of key switches which trigger a MIDI message when used. But usually, the active key switches are far enough outside of the likely range that you'll play on your keyboard that the situation you've described shouldn't happen too often. Also, using Articulation mapping like this will over-ride any inadvertent key switches you happen to trigger by accident.
@royzilbersher3228
@royzilbersher3228 4 месяца назад
so you have to make different sets for bass instruments as well? because the keyswitch is in different session
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 4 месяца назад
Hi Roy. You might well have to do that if the key switches for the samples you want to use are allocated to different keys, yes. But do remember that the Articulation Set is saved as a Preference file, so once you’ve made it once, it’ll be available to all of your future projects.
@AndreaTarquiniMusic

Hey Jono, sadly it looks that the Articulation Set manu in the track area on the left is not available on Logic 10.2.3 but it's a newer implementation. Do you have any suggestion/solution? Thank you very very much, this video is absolutely useful! Grazie.
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 4 месяца назад
Hi. True, Articulation Mapping was introduced in a later version of Logic. You can still change Articulations but you might be best using regular key switches. That means entering a MIDI Note just before you want a new Articulation to take effect. Compose the musical part you want and then either trigger the Articulations in real time by playing the keys to which the required Articulations are mapped, or draw them in with the Pencil Tool in post-production. I hope that helps!

Sir have a problem maybe You can help “ByThis is a sound design question /music I recorded a blowing through metal tube and trying to the sound in to a musically key looking for result of Key of D what is Your approach of taking any sound that has any type of tonal element to and tune to a key so You can build on that ? I've tried I've tried meladine 5 , Auto-Tune and re- pitch I tried eq out frequencies But I cannot tame enough to key of D What do you use?
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic Год назад
Hi Brian. There is no fixed single way to detect the pitch of a recorded sound and it sounds like you've already tried out some of the best options. Some sounds, particularly those with complex overtones - like blown instruments and bells - avoid obvious pitch detection because the core of the sound (usually referred to as the fundamental frequency) and its overtones/harmonics differ from more straightforward, obviously pitched sounds. In other words, the root of the note might be a D, but its overtones might imply a different note altogether, making it hard to fit into one key. One thing you could try would be to sample the recording and then to play it up or down a few notes, ideally alongside the track you're trying to fit it to. If you trigger it up or down every single chromatic key of an octave, with luck, one will 'feel right'. Otherwise, it might just be that the core sound is too harmonically rich to fit into one scale.
@BrianCraig-bh1mo
@BrianCraig-bh1mo Год назад
@@jonobuchananmusic so if the sound needs a fundamental frequency can I just add one in meaning record me huming a d note or play a one d note from a sythn ? And if I did that what are ways I can seemless blend or combine in to the original sound blowing through a metal tube so it sounds like one whole sound?
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic Год назад
@@BrianCraig-bh1mo You could certainly try that - layering sounds is always a rich sonic experience and it will certainly help tie the sound to your chosen key. In terms of blending them, volume balance between the sounds, using a shared reverb/effect on them both and EQing them into similar sonic territory will all help bring them together. This is the joy of production and what makes us all make records in different ways - try some things out and see what works for you. Good luck!
