This is a really useful video, in that there's a lot of people (like myself) who are using and who want to work with the sounds on their external MIDI instruments. The main takeaway I got from this video was that after you record the MIDI track, you need to create an audio track whose inputs match the [audio] inputs of the external MIDI instrument. We're assuming that all audio is coming in through your USB-to-audio interface, which it most likely should be. Many modern MIDI instruments can use USB-to-audio, though, so you may actually be sending that audio back through your instrument to monitor it, in certain cases. Kind of confusing. I've found it helps to draw a simple flowchart of how the audio and MIDI signals are flowing in your setup, and which MIDI and audio channels are being used. Also, Apple's help page on the Logic Pro External Instrument is useful for an overview of how to use the External Instrument pane, which was in this video. support.apple.com/guide/logicpro/external-instrument-controls-lgcp12e7acdc/mac

You would have to change the volume of the input coming in from your hardware that's external. If the gain is low check the settings or you can always add some post processing in logic afterwards

External midi will send signal to outboard gear. External instrument is something you can set up so the output will come back in via the same format.

depends on your external instrument mine had a USB midi but if not you can easily get irregular midi cable and connected to your computer installed proper drivers and you can access it using the same as you would any other controller but you would also need an audio input as well either into your sound card or through your USB port whatever is supported by your external hardware

This is the best video ive found so far on this topic and the only one that has worked for me. The only problem im having is that when i turn the arpeggio mode on, logic no longer receives signal from my Roland FA-06. Do you have any ideas as to why this might be happening ? any assistance would be much olbiged

that is signal flow related in logic - it must not be sending out the arpeggio MIDI to external unit

hey man. i'm using logic pro x + a motif xs keyboard + scarlett 2i2 interface. Once i created my midi section in logic, how do i get logic to play the same midi section, but using the sounds that's on my motif keyboard ? Please help...

You have to make sure your input and output are set to your keyboard so your midi is triggering the sound in your keyboard and the output is from speakers

thank you so much ! i have been searching for a video like this forever. though i do have a slight problem, whenever i play a tone on my synthesizer while connected to logic, the tone comes out higher pitched and makes a completely different sound then how i wanted it to be. should i lower the buffer or is this because i’m connected by usb cable? any advice will help

Unfortunately this trick does not work for recording v-drums with USB input only. There are many variations which I do not know how to use. First of all I am advised to use external midi track rather than software track. Here you use software track. Why not external? And when external is used you do not get input channel options. I successfully record midi with v-drums and can change program while play because it all comes from v-drums but I can not get it into audio. I do not want to keep changing my input my interface inputs are busy with guitars. or I only use one input for drums but I want to record stereo drums?! I really need to understand how an external midi track can be bounced to audio, only using usb input.

I think I found a way though. First I changed my audio input in LogicX to TD-30, then, in midi environments there is a channel called preview, I directed external midi to that using inputs 1-2 which are actually from v-Drums, then I can bus out that to any audio track. what happens to quality I am not sure...

hey, I have a question. I have a Yamaha DGX-530. I think it is stereo. When I have to pick the name, the only thing that shows up is the all selection with nothing else. Do you have any ideas to fix this?

Hi! Thank you so much this helped me a lot. I just have one question. When I play the midi track I can hear the sustain that I recorded from my Yamaha P-115, but when I try to record that midi track (as explained in the video) the sustain disappears. Do you know how to fix that?

You mean, when you try to record the audio track (after recording the MIDI track), the sustain on your Yamaha P-115 MIDI track disappears? It sounds like the P-115 is not accepting the MIDI sustain signals sent from Logic. Be sure that the P-115 is set to accept MIDI control change messages. I'd suggest downloading the manual from the Yamaha website, "Computer-related Operations" (usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/329494/computer_en_rm_m0.pdf) and checking the MIDI settings, according to what you want to do.

Great video but having some issues. I have the software track running external midi and for the test I played a C on the beat for four beats. Simple. I created an Audio track and hit record and for some reason it goes nuts and plays three sixteenth notes for every one quarter note I played... any thoughts?

hi I don't have any midi interface but I have USB midi cable through which I have connected my Yamaha MM6 with logic pro .Am able to play software instruments but somehow am not able to trigger my internal Keyboard sounds i. e from my Yamaha MM6 through Logic Daw. can u help me to play the normal keyboard patches with the help of Midi through logic. what I mean to say is that I want to use the sounds of external device i.e my synthesizer by using midi track (not audio) Please help me as am breaking my head for last few days n getting frustrated time n again

Some keyboards are only able to send midi through USB and some can send audio! I would check out the manual for your keyboard and see if that is feasible :)

Hi I have recorded a midi track into Logic, now when the midi notes have finished my Synth carries on playing, how do I make it stop when the midi notes say it should stop? also I can't alter the midi notes either, whenever I press play in logic the synth plays which is not useful when making a track, please help

It helped me out a lot but I encountered a new problem ... Now when I want to select a software track to use the software instruments in logic, I have my audio from my digital piano playing IN the software track and I can't mute it. When i hit mute and lower the volume all the way down, only the software instrument mutes but I can still hear my digital piano. I've looked all over to stop it from doing that but I couldn't. The only thing that fixed it was closing down the whole Logic file and starting up a new one :/

Looks like somehow your recording or MIDI track that has routed midi/audio from digital piano is still in "input monitoring" mode. Its def frustrating and has happened to me before too. Try that out.

Great Video. Thank you. This is a long shot, but here goes: I'm running Logic Pro X 10.6.1 and an M-Audio Venom synth. I've followed all of these instructions, I've managed to get the synth to play through the 'External Instrument' track, I've managed to record the audio into an audio track and I've recorded the MIDI notes that I played into the 'External Instrument' track, but for some reason the MIDI will not control the external synth after I've recorded it when I hit PLAY. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

If everything you're telling me that has worked most likely it's a midi routing issue. Look into the midi setting of logic if you're using another controller look into the settings of that and also any kind of routing for a midi.

i literally just need to figure out to press play in logic and make my digitakt and synths play so i can multi track always starting at the same time instead of pressing record in logic then pressing play on my synths and having to realign them. I have not had issues w/ that - generally keep the buffer speed lower if you are having latency issues!

You will have to save the sound via playback after you do midi recording of the playback. For using it as midi controller - you will have to check the manufacturer settings :)

I got lost at 1:10. I set up my MIDI keyboard using the steps that you laid out but I'm not understanding how you got the drum sound to start playing right after that. That's where I'm confused because I didn't see the set up for that, it just started playing. Can you explain this to me? Because I want to choose a unique sound to start playing too. Thanks

You need to have your audio routed to logic to be coming in as an input. Mine was at input 3 and 4. This is why it started playing. Do you know how to create an aggregate device in logic x?

I have a korg m50 connected to my focusrite 4i4 interface. Is it true that I cannot convert the midi to audio using the korg as an external device? From what I understand the conversion can only be done if I'm using soft synths. If I wanted to record the korg as audio I would need to connect the korg directly into my interface as I would with say a guitar or mic? Thank you.

Correct the audio of the Korg had to be added as an input and recorded on logic as an audio track be it mono or stereo. Midi will trigger and midi will record but not audio by default. I would make a new track with record enabled and inputs selected where the audio is routed.

@@SoniqSounds I don't believe the Korg has that function, but I'll double check that. I went ahead and connected the Korg directly to my interface's instrument input and boom, recorded audio. Edit: So I figured out how to use my Korg to record audio and midi separately. Only change I need to make is turn midi local control on for audio and local control off for midi on the Korg. Leave local control off during playback and I hear both audio and midi together. Pretty cool considering I'm not that knowledgeable with this stuff yet. Edit: I found a way to record the Korg M50 in midi and convert to audio, after googling for hours and it's so simple. I insert new midi tracks, select the Korg's bank and patch I want to use, go ahead and record. I tested this creating three different midi tracks. Then I insert a new audio track. Set the output on the three midi tracks to my interface's output. Enable recording on the audio track, begin recording with the three midi tracks playing. Powered off the Korg just to be sure where the sound is coming from. Played the new audio track and voila! Midi converted to audio! Well maybe not converted but recorded the midi tracks into an audio track. I can't believe it took me so long to find this solution. I searched and searched and finally found a post from 2010 where someone explained this process. I'm over the moon that now I can record and edit in midi, then dump the finished product into an audio file. If something sounds wrong here, or a potential problem doing this, please let me know. you have to record it on a new audio channel! you have to add audio track and then add the input of that as the input where the sound is coming from.

Hi, I am a beginner, and only beginning to build my studio - can you please tell me what I need in order to achieve what I want. I have a problem because i have a yamaha tyros 4 keyboard, imac 2015 and pro logic x. I want to use the sound from the keyboard and record it into logic. it looks like you have everything that you need do you have a good computer you have logic Providence has all the sounds and you have a keyboard as well. does your keyboard have a midi connection that you can connect it to your computer with. If you do then you should be able to use the control from your keyboard and pull up sounds and logic pro and make music. I say first focus on getting the sound into your computer and start playing around and logic before building your studio more. as far as you have a good pair of headphones or decent speakers you should be good to get started

I have set up my motif xf keyboard just like your vid and record piano to track 1, but when I change the keyboards to, say guitar or drums and record track 2, track one now use that sound instead of the piano previously recorded as midi

@@samuelmaylor6634 On your keyboards - are you ensuring that the sounds are not loading on different midi channels? eg channel 1 vs channel 2? that is the only way I can imagine this not working as it should. If that is the case then check your keyboard settings OR the midi settings on the inspector and which channels they are playing.

well, I am coming across and issue where when I record from external instrument and put it on a audio track. The audio track is much lower in volume than on external instrument track. I tried to find a normalize function but I can't find it. The only way I can for the moment is when I export audio into MPC Studio.

I have a roland rd700nx connected to my mac with logic pro. The external instrument option works for piano but sounds a little dull. but if i change the voice of my roland to string, i still hear piano. I dont know why. Please do reply

Make sure you dont have any instruments loaded on the midi channel! Sounds like you may have a piano patch loaded in logic or it is being triggered :)

How do I sequence multiple external midi devices on diff channels at once in Logic Pro X? I have my MPC sending midi channels 1-10 to sequence my ASR10 (ch 1-8) Emax (ch 9) and SP1200 (ch 10) I want the MPC midi data to "pass thru" Logic and be recorded onto a midi track so that I can edit midi event on a larger screen the videos Ive seen on using external midi instruments are convoluted at best, and most only show one device being trigger from a midi controller at a time

You just have to make sure you have an interface that can handle different midi channels and set each track up to do the same on correlating midi channels - it should work

I have a Unitor 8 interface, I understand signal/data flow just not how to actually go about routing a midi input thru Logic to a external midi destination with both the in and out being set to specific midi channels and devices in my AMS setup..ie in Pro Tools on a midi track I can simply select the input & or midi output for the midi track , is it that direct and simple in "Logic"?

Fretless_ness Of course - Are you using logic? Does your keyboard have MIDI and Audio output? If so - have you setup logic so it sees the input of your sound card where the audio from the keyboard?

I am using Logic Pro X. I have a Korg Taktile which has a Usb and Audio output. So, I can hear all of the notes being played and it does actually record in red (with the red r clicked), but after the recording, I cannot hear any playback.

Looks like there is a MIDI output issue from your Logic to your KORG. I would look at the manual on how to set up the MIDI out properly so you can hear the audio

***** Okay, but let me ask you. I'm plugging my keyboard into my mac via USB and using an auxiliary output to an adapter which is USB as well. Do I have to use a MIDI cable in order for this to work?

Looks like your keyboard is a MIDI controller so it sends MIDI data to logic, etc. However, you need to load sounds in logic to play your keys and trigger sounds. This tutorial is for keyboards that have built in sounds and MIDI interface. Hope that helps. -EastWestBeats

2 possible issues 1) output is in mono 2) audio channel you're recording on is mono (sometimes you need to use both of your mic pre inputs eg input one 1 for L and input 2 for R) - Hope that helps :)
