Logitech Blue Sona Mic Review / Test (vs. SM7b, RE20, Podmic, AT2040, MV7)

Today I review a microphone from Logitech, the makers of webcams. This is an XLR dynamic mic with an inbuilt preamp and it offers a darker and smoother sound which is not what I was expecting from them. I think it sounds quite good if that's the sound you're looking for, and many people will probably enjoy the sound. If you're looking for bright and exciting sounding mic, this is more of a soft sound.

PiXimperfect's channel is, as far as I know, the highest subscribed English Language channel run by an Indian out of India. He is making us Indians proud 🌝 ! Meanwhile, kudos to Bandrew as well. You are perhaps the only youtuber, alongside Curtis Judd, that I trust in terms of Audio Reviews, and I like yours more anyday. My only request to you would be not to do any sponsored videos, e.g. like the one you did for RodeCaster Pro 2. That device came with bugs galore, and the internet was full of people complaining about some issue or the other, to the extent that the launch was called a disaster of sorts by some. I myself received 2 defective units - the original as well as the replacement, both. Had to finally ask for a refund. Your review didn't throw any light on users reporting so many issues. This was also the case with the Elgato Wave XLR, for which you again did a sponsored video, but the device had issues, reporter bt many. I experienced this myself as well. Doing sponsored videos for products that are being criticised by multiple users for quality issues makes your credibility take a hit. So please don't do any sponsored audio equipment reviews, cause then the neutrality isn't there anymore. Have sponsors from other segments instead, which you don't review on the channel. That's my humble request. Also, if possible, please try and review the Sanken CU-41 mic , as well as the Elgato Wave DX dynamic mic that has just come out. Following are the links to both of them :- sanken-mic.com/en/product/product.cfm/3.1000700 www.elgato.com/en/wave-dx-dynamic-microphone

Did you notice bad electronic shielding on the Logitech Blue Sona? I have the same issue with the Sona as with the Shure MV7X but even louder. The moment I turn on my studio lights (regular budget boxes) and the mic points in a specific direction I get quite an audible mid frequency humming noise. It also happens with my LED lights but not as loud. The distance to the lights doesn't seem to matter, it's there 2 feet or 10 feet away from the lights. I'm pretty sure I didn't have the issue with the SM7B I had for a short while and none of the other 3-4 dynamic mics, only the 2 mentioned before. Is there a way to get rid of it? Because I can't seem to find out other than pointing in the direction where it doesn't hum, which isn't really a solution though. Thanks in advance
@dandruff7807

I have not tried this but it may 'possibly' help.......Connect a short wire from the negative part of your mic element to the internal metal housing/shield of the microphone.

@Podcastage Год назад
I did not personally encounter any shielding issues while using the Sona or the MV7x. It’s possible that I just have such low EMI in my space that the issue does not present it self. I may have to start looking into ways to test shielding.
@TheNitpicker
@TheNitpicker Год назад
@@Podcastage I guess you have very good shielding and my room has terrible shielding. I often have a hum or a ground loop, so it must be my room and my power cables in my house.for example I plug in an aux cable from my computer to a mixer and have a terrible ground loop but when I have both devices plugged in the same power outlet, it's gone. Thanks for your reply though, i guess it's just the problem of an old house and bad wiring

Yeah agree 100%. The price is in steep competition. SM7B, RE20 and now the Ethos makes this a tough acquisition. But at $200-$250 it would disrupt the market. The sound samples I heard everywhere are pretty dang good imo. I am very pleasantly surprised. But it's just not enough for me to buy it when I can get the Ethos or SM7B.
@CocaineCobain
@CocaineCobain Год назад
The issue with the Ethos and SM7B are the price increase when accounting for something like a fethead/cloudlifter. This microphone put up against the SM7B right out of the box seems to be a great option and honestly picking it over the SM7B (currently the king microphone amongst streamers) makes a lot of sense.
@Dracomies
@Dracomies Год назад
@@CocaineCobain I'd say the statement would be true if we were referring to interfaces that were older. But these days an interface like the SSL2, MOTU M2, ID4 Mark 2 and even cheaper models like the Elgato Wave makes this less of a non-issue. But yes, if you have an older interface, ie Scarlet Solo Gen 1 then for sure. But interfaces these days can handle an SM7B quite well imo. It's case by case I think. That being said, if I had to choose between the two they both sound fantastic.
@CocaineCobain

Hey Bandrew! Great video! I personally love my SM7b, I thought the Logi Blue Sona is comparable. Although in my opinion it has a more modern and articulate sound, not as smooth through the frequencies and it sounded like the low end was not as controlled. I think I won't be switching from my SM7b! but this might be good if someone maybe doesn't want to by the Shure? Oh also the cadence of your song being in a minor key, but then ending in a major key or on a major note, is called a Picardy Third!

Thanks for the really in-depth review and comparisons - it really helped me because I looked at all of these mics (except the Neumann one ) and it was really difficult to find the "best" one for my purpose - a mic that works for voice recording (for work) and a little bit of hobby music playing (I like recording myself playing so I can see where I can improve). I think the Blue Sona sounds pretty much the same as the Dynacaster, SM7b, and RE20 - Neumann U87 Ai does sound a tiny bit better but for such a much higher price point... Overall I think I like the Blue Sona's smoother sounds watching through the different mic showcases a few times, I noticed the other mics are picking up those plosives? a bit more (the S sounds) and overall the Blue Sona dampens those sounds so it sounds better to me (this is including the legendary SM7b). Acoustics-wise, I think the guitar part sounded good - it's not studio level but it's good enough for playing

Awesome review. I was thinking about picking up the blue Sona for spoken word, I currently have an SM7B and an RE20 but after hearing your review, I am going to pass on this Logitech mic. Honestly all the mics in the $100 range competes with the Blue Sona, sure it has a built in preamp but at that price point it's honestly not worth it. Also totally agree that the EQs are not usable; sharp, unnatural and unpleasant to listen to when enabled

It's sounds very nice but a tad expensive and you can get an sm7b for just a bit more. Thanks for the great review as always Bandrew.

But why would you get the sm7b? It's already 50$ more, you need a cloudlifter or something similar,and the sound is comparable

@@superblitz2274 well its a mic that doesn't lose value. How much will this be in 5 years?

@@QuantumGamingUploads idk,but I don't really factor that into my purchase,the value by the Sona is so much better

@@superblitz2274 I do. I don't buy things that will be worth junk prices in 5 years. For the price is that the best mic you can buy?I don't think so. If you do your research you will find so many equal to it at way less.

@@QuantumGamingUploads yes,but by that logic the sm7b is also overpriced as heck? I don't think the value of selling it 5 years later makes the sm7b worth 400$ at all Obviously,I agree that there are even better value mics out there,but between the sm7b and Sona only,I'd get the sona

Dynacaster so good you forgot what mic you were reviewing? X-D this mic actually sounds great without the eq! Props to Logitech, although it seems to pick up a LOT of noise off axis.

The black colored option is on sale for $299 right now. A bit more appealing, but I totally agree, $250 would be great.

It's called the Picardy 3rd when you end in major from a minor key. It was a late renaissance church preference to not end the song in the minor mode. Too sad!!!

I typically think most mics >$100 sound ok when you test them, but I didn't like this one very much at all. Sounds like it needs a lot of eq reduction in the low end, and the rolloff when the high pass filter is turned on is a bit too aggressive and makes it sound thin. I also didn't like how it responded with the proximity effect test. Granted everyone's voice and preferences are different, but I thought the Dynacaster and SM7b sounded way better. I think I'd even rather use the V7 or SM58 based on this test. Also surprised the market can seemingly support yet another $300-$400 dynamic microphone.
