The Doctor Who story Logopolis was clearly set at Jodrell Bank observatory, a radio telescope in Cheshire, but for some reason uses a model instead of the real thing. The Season 18 Blu-Ray updates this with new footage shot at Jodrell Bank, however its updates are appropriately gentle and just swap out the model for the telescope (very convincingly). I wanted to have a go at going a little further, transforming the shot into widescreen and incorporating the telescope at a more realistic scale.
I used an AI image extender to elongate the original shot (minus the telescope) to the scale of the widescreen format I was aiming for; and to extend it upwards a little. Using traditional photo editing I merged together two versions of the AI extension because both had some problems, and and then I edited the telescope into the shot. This is not the place for a discussion of the use of AI for video-editing, however I wanted to make it very clear how and where I have used it.
There are a couple of effect overlays to bind the shot together. I don't have the skills to make it look like it wasn't filmed in the 1980s, but I think I've achieved a scene that would have been possible in the 1980s with a higher budget and filming permissions, which was the aim.
