Elections for the Lok Sabha are almost over, and now we wait for the results. In this week’s Let Me Explain, Pooja Prasanna provides a ready reckoner to help you understand what to expect in the coming days: a look at the 2019 parliament, the pre-poll alliances, and the possible scenarios post-results.
The situation is clear if the NDA gets more than 300 seats, but what if they don’t?
The Lok Sabha has 543 seats, and any party or alliance needs at least 272 to form the government. In 2019, the BJP secured the highest vote share at 37.4% and won 303 seats, while the NDA as a whole got 44.87% of the vote share, translating to 353 seats. The Congress, meanwhile, received 19.5% of the vote share and won 52 seats, with the UPA getting 26.74% and 91 seats. The BJP's decisive victories in 2014 and 2019 almost ended coalition politics, but much has changed over the last five years. Allies became rivals, and new alliances were formed. Here's where the current pre-poll formations stand.
