No mommy this hairstyle is not appropriate it's buns! Everyone in every culture has wore buns!😄 culture appropriation usally kicks in when one race of people is either taking credit for something they didn't start or are getting praised for doing something another culture created while the people of said other culture are being shamed for it. Hope I explained this well! Loved watching you as usual! I adore listening too your rambles!💕
I think you explained it very well. There are even examples of hairstyles similar to space buns from the Middle Ages in Europe. I'm sure they are also found elsewhere.
The problem isn’t really about hair buns it’s when people start calling Afro puffs space buns. Afro puffs have been around for a long time & just because white Girls started to call their buns that doesn’t mean you can take a black hairstyle that’s already existed & change it. This is exactly why ppl were so upset about the Afro puffs in animal crossing cuz there was already a lack of black hair styles to begin with and when they finally added some ppl were referring to the obvious Afro puff hairstyle as space buns :p
No. Hair has been twisted up by all sorts of cultures over history. The same with braiding, curling, and crimping. We can’t honestly say where and when a style started. Most people who are screaming about appropriation don’t understand the definition of the word.
I'm definitely getting Moonlight BB, I have Spicy Babe and love the idea of Red and Blue girlfriends LMAO. And Freshest is going to be their adopted child. A rocker girl, a goth girl, and their vaporwave child.
Oh mommy! Sunshine gurl is absolutely my FAVORITE omg doll EVERR but I did have the same issue with the pants and that seems to be the ONLY design flaw with this doll. But it IS an easy fix! All you need to do is snip 1 or 2 threads at the back (where it wants to rip anyway) an they go on much easier! I have NO idea why MGA sewed it up just that much too tight but it IS an easy fix and she looks AMAZING with them on! I hope you try this because she is my favorite and I really want you to love her as much as I do! ❤💕
@@PorcelainJoy your right I guess but who knows? No ones got the exact answers so I am not blame and hope you won’t blame me cuz I just heard her say that it is cultural so idk?
her hairstyle is definitely not appropriation and it’s more just insensitive to associate space buns with Asian culture because they’re literally buns(anybody who does is giving scary otaku realness)- also I screamed on the inside when you cut that hair off even tho I’m the same way with cutting lil strands of hair :’D
I sort of feel like I didn’t explain well enough,, basically what I mean is if you are associating space buns with asian culture you are stereotyping asian people when the real authentic way their hair is done can be much more elaborate and beautiful and saying that sapce buns are appropriation reduces them to basic whitewashed styles.
it's not cultural appropriation. when you mentioned animal crossing, i knew haha. in animal crossing the "space buns" arent space buns at all, but afro puffs, of course being associated with black people's hair due to the texture. space buns and afro puffs are two different things.
In Japan you can go to a store and rent kimonos and walk around in them for some amount of time. If Japanese are fine with renting kimonos out to tourists regardless of color then a bun style is fine. Besides. As long as the person is happy to learn about the culture etc and not do anything bad in it etc the Japanese (or whoever) is happy for you to wear whatever you want.
Japan is just amazing with respect and stuff like that... While you have highschoolars pantys scented perfume on one side, you have all the respect and amazingness on the other and uurgh! the world would just be so much better if we were a little more like Japan
you can’t assume that because one culture is okay with others partaking in one part of their culture that all cultures are okay with that, or even that all Japanese people are okay with that. I don’t think the hair style is cultural appropriation but your example is totally irrelevant. You can’t assume that because one this isn’t offensive then nothing is offensive
I think a collective toy drive with a bunch of doll/toy RU-vidrs would make it more open for kids with different interests, plus the more the merrier. Some kids may be interested in dolls, dinosaurs, activity sets or crafts so each kid is covered.
I think its a wonderful idea but not just dolls but toys in general. Its a small act of kindness but those are the best. (Storyline mode:) In 2005, Hurricane Rita actually hit our area on my birthday. I was 17 years old turning 18. I had already finished a (summer) semester in college. I was old enough to understand that safety came first. Still sucked though to be forgotten in the mess of thing but my family actually suprised me with a birthday cake at our excavation location (a family member's home). They had made a last grocery run and picked up a cake(had Happy Birthday, Scarlett!! on it too). It was such a simple thing but I will never forget it. I actually held onto that a simple act of kindness when we found out that the hurricane had flooded our area. All my belongings were destroyed (besides a few items that were high up). We spent a good while displaced ...living with a friend, then a borrowed camper, and then a fema camper until our house was lifted and fixed. (We were actually considered one of the lucky ones) I figured I could live through anything if there was someone out there willing to hook a girl up with a cake even if hell was descending on them. So yeah, I think some child may hold onto that toy like I held to that memory of that cake. (If you are in South Louisiana and are reading this: all my love and good thoughts to you and your family. Stay Safe! [Hurricane Ida hits tomorrow.] )
I wanted to tell u don't beat urself up over the knock off "reborns" I wish you would repost the vid...how dare ppl bully others. I enjoy any type of doll and definitely can't afford the reborns all the time. Almost every brand has a knock off lol. This is a cute vid. Pls give ur son love 🌈 I love being apart of the community
No it's not cultural appropriation. Who doesn't wear buns? My goodness... Not everything needs to be political correct. So sick of all this bs over who can wear what and when they can wear it.
I didn’t get Sunshine Gurl because of her crazy pants. I just don’t like them because they are cropped, then there’s the open top part. I just don’t get them at all. 🤷🏼♀️
Omg I watched Elvira today too she couldn’t get the pants on either. I actually got them on her over the shorts but it was a struggle. I don’t edit my videos so if I struggle it’s in the video 😂😂😂👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗 and it happens a lot yes so much waste these days my hubby is always like we throw away more than we actually got out of it 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I love you so much! I’m almost 18 and have recently gotten back into collecting dolls and toys and so many people judge me for it. It makes me feel a lot better to see you still loves dolls at your age. Also I use to watch mommy and Gracie a while ago so I’ve kind of grown with your channel! Send my love to Kaden ❤️
Same here! Turning 18 soon and growing up i've always felt like dolls were something I had to feel quite ashamed for for liking. Slowly trying to embrace things I enjoy even if they seem 'childish' etc..
I'm 54 and still collecting dolls! Never feel bad about your passions. There are many of us here to support you. I love Melissa's opening statement so much I hope she never changes it!
@@Mini_Moo Wow it’s like we’re having the same experience! Yeah it’s nice to be able to collect toys that I use to feel too old for or ashamed to get especially now that I can afford it a little bit better. Good luck embracing what you love!
I’m 55 almost 56 and I still collect dolls. Don’t give anyone else the key to what makes you happy, keep it for yourself, it’s worth too much, to give away for free.🥰
No they are not cultural appropriation, they’re not even remotely similar to what was going on in animal crossing, those were Afro puffs with corn row braids 🙄 Afro puffs aren’t buns they’re ponytails
The hairstyle is just a hairstyle. I can't tell you how many fellow Brits have that style..I've even had it (I'm British). Its deffo not cultural appropriation at all. I'm in disbelief that there are people out there who would find a hairstyle offensive and accuse it of being cultural appropriation. Its literally hair! Its discrimination to tell people they can't have a certain hairstyle just cause it originates or is popular in another country. People are idiots these days. As long as a person is kind that's all that matters not what hairstyle a person LIKES/chooses to wear. Different if people were taking the p**s of the culture but if you like it then wtf is wrong?! People need to get a life.. I'm glad your neutral though about all this. Shame about the Karens tho 😔😔 P.S Fantastic video from you as per usual. Love your lashes. I can't cope without my falsies. The bigger the better. You look absolutely stunning! Also love your make up 💗
i don’t really mind if sunshine gurl’s pants are tight & cant be worn bc i strongly dislike them 😅 i was planning on leaving her in her crop top and shorts, hoodie and skates, i wanna restyle her hair though
I think softer toys would also be important for those people! I mean, can you imagine how it would be to fly from somewere where people are being killed left and right to somewhere where you dont speak the language and people look at you through the corner of their eye? (Cuz lets be honest... a huge part states is still very racist, is still very not ok with helping people, they will not make this any easier) If i was going through this i would appreciate a plushie so much! I went through something similar, growing in the streets on my own, to going back to society and working on my trauma, the only item i had from home(aka my parents) was a small bambi plushie and even tho it was small and hard to hug i held on to it like my life depended on it! Then they found the dog i was with in the streets so the dog became the hugging support and basicly what keeps me upfloat, but the plushie was still there, and is still here!
I love your videos because we are about the same same. In our Fabulous Fifties and your stories take me down memory lane. Earlier today I played Rod Stewart and made an old fashion banana split. My great nephew and niece were dancing and eating. We laugh so hard that I'm sure like I worked out. The Good old days🥰🥰🥰❣
Love your videos... I opened this one recently was so disappointed the Velcro was not sewn well and the pants do not fit well and the raw edge was frayed.. contacted MGA but no word.. Love Moonlight she is one of my faves.. totally regret getting her BFF. EDIT : I received a new pair of pants from MGA in yesterdays post. They are no better than the first pair do not fit and are poorly sewn.
I struggled with her pants too! For my doll, the belt wasn’t buckled but was fully on the pants and I put them on the wrong way at first then struggled with the belt and had to take it out of the loop myself. I managed to get her pants up and over her shorts but struggled with that and then found that I couldn’t even close her pants. I thought it was because my hands were weak bc of my disability but my mom couldn’t fully close them either. This is my third lol omg doll where I couldn’t get the clothes to properly fit them and it made me so angry.
Love your earrings and your videos!! Been watching you since I was 12 years old, I'm 19 now. Thanks for always reminding us it's okay to do what you love no matter how old you get. You're amazing and I love you!!!
I dont know the answer either but as a male with long hair... I LOOOOVE a braid. and i just learned how to french braid... and cornrows! its just sad that we have to take the fun out of everything in life. I just want to express myself and look cute! and i will!
I've always assumed that since they have the name 'space buns' there was some inspiration from Sailor Moon. She's always the first thing I think of every time I see them as a hairstyle, and now that people who grew up watching the show are adults and influencing hairstyle trends, I really think that has something to do with where it came from.
I am pretty sure we called them Odangos / Dumplings ( most fans used to call Sailor Moon's buns , may be some still do , I don't know.... ) I don't know when "Space Buns" became a thing but I think it's a cute thing to call them. For Chibi Moon we called them Heart Buns or Double Buns.
Sunshine girl is 100% my fav Omg doll!! Me and my boyfriend have started to Do “matching dolls” , we both have One of the Bff’s (he has spicy, I have sweets) and we also Matched with Amaya and River , and so when I saw her and realised they were bff’s I was IN LOVE!!!
Mommy those are spacebuns and they are for everyone. The ones in animal crossing are puffs, which are for more textured hair types. But those are spacebuns. 🥰
Sunshine is litterally my fave omg doll so far so this makes me really worried to get her. Ive seen other reviews though where the jeans fit perfectly, so maybe the one you got was just faulty
I think hers was faulty mine was a little hard to get on as well but eventually I got the pants on... don't mess with the belt!! I was trying to stretch the belt to get the pants on but I noticed it had a buckle and I unbuckled it and the pants went on pretty easily
From what i know, The animal crossing controversy became controversy because the twitter user was specifically not in good faith/ character and used the buns as fuel to be acting “innocent” and playing a victim while spreading very hurtful things. Ex: “what are people attacking me??” > kicks a puppy “I don’t understand!” >throws plastic into the ocean “how dare you treat me this way! I didn’t do anything wrong!” >sets a kid’s park on fire (a very hyperbolic, embellished example but you get what i mean)
We use to go to my Uncles and Aunts house in Long Island 45 mins felt like 2hrs lol we leave at like 11 to make good time lol and before I got my first Walkman we listen to 50’s and 60’s music and country music OMG thinking back I so miss those days
I love the LOL OMG dolls, but I seriously consider whether I'll be able to pull pants up the new dolls before purchasing. I still can't get the pants up Snowlicious, but other dolls I've been able to. So I'll pass on Sunshine here.
People say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, " but really, most everything is. Sure, there are a few idiots out their who purposely mock other cultures, but I think the majority are just, "omg this is beautiful, can I do that?" My parents were very strict about what tv we could watch, so when I did "space buns" in my hair back in the 70's, it was just because I had hair down below my waist that got in the way - had nothing to do with any culture, and in fact, when you asked that, I didn't even associate it with any particular culture. I do remember desperately wanting a dashiki as a kid, as I thought they were the most amazing, beautiful thing that all the cool people (they must be cool, they were on the news lol) wore, but I never had one. I usually hear "cultural appropriation" referring to white people doing/wearing something associated with people of African descent, and it's often hard for me to take it seriously when so many straighten and bleach their hair or wear wigs that look like Caucasian hair. I hate that we are hurting each other over this, and look forward to the day where we stop defining people by one aspect of their makeup and everyone can celebrate and enjoy the differences and share them.
@@lennon7511 omfg it literally is french braids , fishtail braids all hairstyles made by people with white hair and part of their culture but you don’t see them crying about it
I love mine! Yes her outfit was tight. But I took my time and got it to fit perfectly!! Her hair was a bit of a mess on my doll, but the buns were fine.. the details on these dolls are amazing!! They got me collecting again.. ✌❤🌈
I think what you meant with Animal Crossing is just the thing, that the buns are textured hair and not straight/just curly or wavy hair. Tbh, I didn't really remember what the hair looked like so I thought that "Yea, non black people can also have these hairstyles since curly or wavy hair exists" then I realized how it looks on the scalp and thats black culture lol. But straight/wavy space buns would be nice tbh More wavy and curly in general ngl-
What I had to do to get the pants on my sunshine gurl is. I had to hold the shorts down while I was pulling up the pants. I don’t know if this we’ll help you but it did for me. And you can ask mga for a replacement on the belt for the doll too :)
My favorite color is Pink so when i saw sunshine girl i had to get her. But i also had sooo much trouble getting her jeans on. But i did get them on and they look great. It took me a while but i had to be very very slow and patient lol. But i do adore her. And i havent got moonlight bb yet but i plan too! Love ur vids! Side note...i never wanted a fail fix doll until i saw u unbox and review them...and now i legit have every single one. U made me love them! Amd as a gayan who plays with dolls you are such a joy to watch amd although u dont know me and i dont know u i feel ur support! Love u!
Awwww...I think I need to take off her shorts if I want to get her pants on. And I love the shorts. So I think I'm going to ditch the pants and keep the shorts on :-). I'm so glad you feel my love....I really am trying to send it out!!!!
Sunshine girl is my favorite omg but her pants were a a big disappointment I leave her in her little shorts or this cute Barbie dress I got in a fashion pack but yeah her pants are impossible to layer with her shorts !
You can wear your hair any way you want !!! Regardless! It’s damn hair. We all need to just stop hating and let people do what they want with THEIR hair. Let’s stop the hate 🖤
Dolltubers I watch, besides you: MyFroggyStuff and NextGen/GBTB. You could do a series of reviews in which the dolls are donated at the end, on top of whatever money you raise. Get with them other tubers and brainstorm! As creative as Toya is, the possiblities are endless!
I might be one of the only people who didn't struggle tremendously on the pants, I just had to take off the belt and I was able to get them on with only a little bit of struggle lmao
I would love to join to help try and raise money! I don't have a huge following at the moment, but I would love to do what I can 💖 I love your cause so much, it really hits close to home with me. And I love how you use your platform to educate and open people's minds being an ally. You are so amazing! 💖💖💖💖💖
those are just buns!! the problem w the animal crossing ones was that nonblack people were using them and calling them space buns when they were actually afro puffs
I don’t technically understand how hard it was for you to get those pants on because I just got this exact doll today and it was like really easy to put her pants on they didn’t rip or anything
I was able to open mine without perforation by cutting all the tape and sliding all the paper slots out, there is a long strip of cardboard at the bottom on the inside that hooks into the actual doll part of the box that can be unwrapped or cut.
She is very cute, but I think that I'm gonna skip her, because I like more her BFF. I had the same problem with the pants of 4K DJ, I had to remove the "panties" because the pants were too tight in the waist/thigh zone.
i never knew lol omg dolls had snap joints (not sure the name -- but i'm sure you know what i'm referring to) until seeing this video, and i have 4 of them! i guess it doesn't matter much since i only display them anyways, but still, thank you for this. i feel so dumb ^^"
@@lightworker221 because of your reply, i went and grabbed one of mine (pop b.b) and tried to snap bend them. they wouldn't budge! maybe i didn't apply enough force, but then i'm concerned about breaking it. i haven't tried with any of my other dolls yet, but that's super weird.
Wow i just moved houses and we went to a little town to visit and i saw sunshine gurl and started to save up im glad buy it thank you so much My World But the colour skem its really cool cause it has the Pansexual colours
I actually own this doll, and I love her sooooo much and I’m still trying to get moonshine bb, but I hated the belt and pants so much when I first got her!
i had just as hard of a time as you getting her pants on, and i was terrified of breaking the belt. i ended up getting them on her without damaging anything, but it took a lot of wiggling and strength than i feel like should have been necessary. she has a very cute outfit but she is just too thicc for those jeans, they needed to make them more stretchy at the waist for sure
I can help you put on the pants I have that doll because she’s my twin but we have differences because I don’t have pink hair in a lot of things I don’t have from her but we both had the same nickname😄😄
I have Sunshine Gurl and I can honestly say that I feel your pain!! I did a live stream unboxing of her and I struggled for 10 minutes and couldn't get the pants on. It was such a train wreck that I deleted the live! I absolutely love her but what a hot mess 😫😩
I hope that the end of this year I can start my youtube chanal for hunarian doll collectors and share stories and many interesting things, just like you❤💖
With the Afghan situation? I am angry that we have US citizens still stuck there. All-The people left behind will not survive. But with the Afghan new citizens I think any way we can help would be awesome. How scary it must be to be hauled out from your home and the poor children. Just horrific. Anything we can do! Do it! 💖🌈🇺🇸
You might have gotten another one that doesn't really have good quality. I ordered Sunshine Gurl and her pants fit just fine! I don't know what happened to yours though. My fav part of her is she underoutfit! (Also her pants didn't rip for me)
The holes on her jeans are not meant to show her skin it's meant to show her shorts. You would have to make sure the shorts aren't riding up and you stuff them down before pulling the jeans up to buckle them.
Her hairstyle isnt at all, because its just buns, nothing cultural about it. The ACNH one was being talked about because it looks like locks that were tied up in buns, the locks are cultural appropriation, the buns themselfs not so much. (This was the explanation my gf's mom, who has come from Africa to Portugal abooout 5 years ago told me. Its not my culture so i dont feel the right to say whats right or wrong, im just passing the info i got from someone i trust more then random white people on the internet)
Melissa: “I’ve got a Deuce who's wearing Barbie pants that we can’t get the Barbie pants off Deuce.” Me: Melissa, I think it’s Clawd Wolf who is wearing Barbie pants not Deuce. I remember from the old classic video that you and Kaiden showed us that Clawd is stuck wearing Barbie doll pants. It’s Clawd not Deuce who is wearing Barbie pants. Am I right or wrong? That’s all I can remember from the old videos.
You are totally right. And I’m just screwing up names as usual. I was seeing Clawd in my head and still said Deuce. Ahhh, the mysteries of the human brain 🧠
It’s alright, thanks for the reply. I love watching your videos ever since you started the channel. You’re an amazing inspiring RU-vidr and your videos are great and fun to watch.
