I love this song. No matter what your countries are, no matter what religions you believe, or no matter what your creeds are, you cannot but fall in love with this sweet and soothing melody.
Had not listened to this song for some time. Picked a good day for it to show up in my song list, as today is Dad's birthdate. This was my Dad's favorite song and he had a story to go with it. During WW2, he and about 3,000 other soldiers were on a hillside in Belgium. It was a bright sunny afternoon and they were singing this song as loud as they could. Dad reminisced that the sound was deafening but spine tingling at the same time. This made a lasting impression on him as he used to talk about it quite often. One of the brighter moments during a dark time.
N I E W I E D E R K R I E G !!!
Lolita, 'ditta' Einzinger, sings the best rendition of LILLI MARLEEN and I have listened to many versions. Her diction is perfect even though I speek not the German language. I abbsolutly love this wonderful song from the WW2 years. My father remembers it well when he served in Egypt in the RAAF. My dad died 30 years ago in 1990. I was born in 1949, I am Australian and this song has special meaning for me.
She was the first female vocalist I head singing this song. A pity she is long gone. She was good and a credit to Salzburg, Austria, where she lived and died.
Another of those fine songs in German I like and that my late Dad told me was a wartime song sung by servicemen of both sides in World War II. What makes it great is it is a song about a couple of lovers and love is Eternal really.
Germany would appreciate singers of bye gone days so too would people my age who were only children in the 1940'sso please remember Germany and Britain have strong relationships with Queen Victoria and her cobsort \Prince Albert who had 13 children so we are all cousins and distant cousins throughout the ages and now I am age 85, I am a man who knows and knows he knows that Europe including Britain will have a president based in Brussels.
I read some where once that during the war some REFM arm chair Col. ordered Arm Forces Radio that the song not be played. When Ike heard about it he was ptetty PO'ed and has the order recended.
