@MoogerTuber dude thats awesome! Let em know I helped you make the decision I wont get any money but I’d love for them to know this helped you make the decision
I love that you demo pickups with some playing dynamics so we can see what they can do. I got a squier paranormal sj coming with jm neck and tele bridge. Great that you mentioned special T. 63 and special T might be right for me. You're a top notch player and gear reviewer. Greatly appreciate the work you put into this.
Absolutely awesome pickups - real clarity and feel.... precise somehow (can't think of a better way to describe it) - tbf there were certain instances where the 'spikier' sound of the stock pickups was great, but these can handle anything and the fact it inspired some bridge/gain playing was also a fun development! :)
Wait til you hear this with the Friedman! It became a bit much trying to squeeze everything I filmed into one video as I didn't want it to be a mini documentary but man, this guitar really does rip without losing all the sounds that I love Jazzmasters for clean. I am genuinely so happy and impressed.
@@AudiomoMusic that is absolutely amazing news man- so happy for you and cannot wait to hear that that’s for sure!!! What a beaut of a guitar all round now!
Thanks Staley! I felt the same way, I didn't dislike the stock pickups but I feel like this set of Lollar's really brought the guitar up a step indeed.
Awesome video! Not gonna lie, I prefer the stock pickups - they sound worn and aged almost brittle (a very acquired taste for sure). However I see now what you were going for, the Lollars definitely sound stronger and better in a "classic'' sense, also they bring the best out of your amp - note separation, atttack/decay, natural drive - all great. Yeah, that is one sweet, sweet guitar, what a vibe!
I also like it a bit better after the mod, definitely better clarity. That said, I wonder if a big part of that change could be due to the higher resistance value on the pots. I just bought a 1984 Fender Japan Telecaster Custom. The neck pickup is very dark, almost muffled sounding. But then I found out it has a 250k volume and tone pot controlling that pickup, so that would definitely have that effect. Either way, Lollar makes really good stuff, so if it's a keeper it's worth that extra money. It's also fun to customize it and make it your own. You also did right to move the whole electronics out. If you ever want to sell that guitar, the next buyer will prefer it stock + you can then simply transplant that new pickguard to your next JM.
I couldnt agree more Jim. Those Lollar pups sound amazing. Especially that fingerpicked jazzy part. There were noticeable differences in all the other samples, but in that jazzy part, bro, they sounded worlds apart different. I may have to look into a set of p90s for my SG.
That's awesome! The Fujigen ones are special glad you found one and definitely the only issue is every JM from that factory in the 80's and 90's outside of the JV in this video has strat pickups in JM housings so a proper set of pickups like these will truly bring it to it's full potential. Love this set.
I agree, the original pickups definitely didn't sound bad at all, but the rest of the guitar was so good that I felt it deserved to have some of the best possible pickups in it to match
Hi Jim, man first off that is one beautiful JM, love the red color and matching headstock! Even with its stock pickups I thought this was a great sounding guitar but am really digging these Lollar pickups, nice! Lovely playing and I also liked that more rocky, faster paced part at around 10:42. Was quite surprised how that bridge pickup sounded with that protein pedal, wow! Really dug it all though and congrats on the new pickups! Q) what do you think of the Fender VMod Jazzmaster pickups by the way? Thanks
The opening monologue was great, super professional. I know that's not guitar related but I've been following your channel here for quite a while and you've really stepped up the game. This was a super professional video. Nice work sir. Now on to the bad... Just kidding 😅 Japanese Fender, great guitars but such weak pickups. Is it possibly the music and the scales/modes they use in Japan that might lend to a thinner sounding pickup? They always choose those it seems but the Japanese mustangs always sound great to me. The MG65 I had was wonderful. 🤷 I definitely didn't care for the stock pups and the difference was so stark that I thought that Lollars were too much. Toward ethr end though, the tone grew in me and I quite liked it. Didn't scream Jazzmaster to me though, seemed to lack that airy and how gher dynamic fidelity that a JM pickup is known for--that fuller range. Sounded good though. It was easy to tell you were really digging them because the end, yeah man, you were grooving and playing differently. Reminds me of the Vintera II Mustang Demo and your playing for that. Sounded great and I love seeing you super excited about the playing and guitar. Congratulations sir, on the amazing guitar!
Bradford I really appreciate that man, I wanted to do things as professionally as possible for this video for Lollar and I'm happy it wasn't unnoticed. They do sound quite different from the stock pickups, much more immediate, in your face without being overbearing like a P90 in a jazzmaster would be, but still a lovely clean tone. I think the reason I was enjoying it so much towards the end was because it wasn't really like my gold Jazzmaster that is much more mellow sounding so it provides a different flavor pallet from a Jazzmaster for me.
@@AudiomoMusic I can't totally appreciate that, chasing that different JM palette. As great as the guitar is, there's only so much you can do with a few of them since they all sound so similar. I've found getting quite different pickup installations in mine was key to offering up a variety while still maintaining what I love about a Jazzmaster. I get what you're saying. 100%
New pickups sounded great, but I loved the aged covers on the other ones. 😂 Man the song around 11:00 was killer. Would’ve sounded better through the Friedman 😅
How did you know I got one of those?? Haha, I do intend on using the tele, this jv, as well as one or two hand made Japanese guitars that seem very fitting considering how that pedal was actually made.
The Lollars are much higher gain, right? They sound like they’d be better for rock. But they lose a little clarity if you’re looking to play jazz. The Lollars are warmer (which I like).
I wouldn't say they are much higher gain, it's just the original pickups were extremely low output by comparison which just accents the added output from the Lollars. They do sound great with rock but I like them a lot for cleans in the middle position which is super important to me
Hybrid ii's have pretty modern sounding JM pickups with a 250k volume pot so they sound a bit different than any traditional jazzmaster pickup like this one. These will sound far more clear, articulate, and imo take gain better too but it's all up for taste. I did enjoy the hybrid ii I had in for a bit but it didn't have the classic kinda jazzmaster sound - killer necks on those though.
