Both sounded great - I preferred the Standard pickups, on-the-whole, but particularly enjoyed the out-of-phase tones with the Mustang Specials. The extra jangle sounded great.
I have an original 72 fender mustang that I bought from someone’s garage that was in disrepair for 30 years got it fixed and the pickups were very low output and muddy sounding getting so got the neck mustang special pickup just to see how I liked it and what a difference it made now I just ordered the bridge pickup really puts guts into mustangs!!
I love the sound of the regular neck pickup, would it be a good fit with a special in the bridge? Or would you recommend keeping it uniform one way or the other
Yes, that would be a great combination if you're looking for a little thicker bridge that can push the front end of the amp a bit more. It's very similar to what folks are doing with our Special Sixty-Four Stratocaster sets.
While we can't make any definitive statements regarding the combination with other manufacturers' products, we can safely say that the Special is a good choice when combining with a humbucker.
They aren't a direct replacement, for various reasons. For starters, two neck pickups will not sound good in two different positions, the one closer to the bridge will sound thinner and weaker and the two won't hum-cancel, like a true neck and bridge combo would when combined. Also, the two styles of pickups are different sizes. Depending on the pickup rout in the body, you *may* be able to drop the Tele pickups right in, but the hole in the pickguard will be noticeably larger than the size of the pickup. That being said, sure, you CAN do it, but it's not really the best idea.
I have a fender cyclone Single coil in neck/bridge (24.75scale) that came with lace sensor golds. Replaced with fender noiseless. Would these be a good match for this guitar?
They very well could be the perfect complement to that instrument. They will make the guitar sound more like a true vintage-inspired Fender. But it won't sound exactly like a Mustang, due to the different scale length, which, to me, is actually all the better -- it's longer than a Mustang but shorter than a Strat or Tele. So, you'll have a more unique sounding guitar that can still cover those more traditional sounds as well.
What you're hearing is not the pickups, it's environmental - EMI, RFI, etc. They're singlecoils, so they will pick up some noise from the environment they are in, as is the case with all singlecoil pickups.
