@@chickendog57 good point. Small womery? These produce a liquid plant feed...Very clean and efficient. In the UK we have waste food collections (which is recycled either turned into bio fuel or compost and then resold) for those who can't compost, choose not to, or can't.

I have yet to buy a bag for it or change the filter I clean it with a little brush and only run it when full which is once a week. I’m disabled so burying my food waste for me isn’t feasible so I use this and then just toss it out on my grass or plants. My dog likes the smell of it and actually eats a lot of it I’ve noticed. The smell usually is of roasted veggies 🥕 i don’t like the price point and know real composting would be better but since I’m disabled and can’t always go outside in my wheelchair nor can I dig a compost heap this is what I use. I wish I could put a solar adapter to make it run more efficiently

Thanks for the review. You ask some important questions! I just got one of these things and wanted to offer my take. I was initially leery about talk of pods and filters, but after talking with another user, I was sold. Excited! 1. The unit comes completely surrounded by eco-friendly packaging: the plastic bags that come around the unit and carbon are all compostable in approved mode, and the carton itself can be added to cycles, too! 2. *Electricity use is nowhere near what is stated in this video.* It is a 500 W appliance, and the power consumption stats listed are in kWh total *per cycle* (no multiplication necessary): Eco-Express: ~0.5 kWh (over 3-5 hours) Lomi Approved: ~0.6 kWh (over 5-8 hours) Grow: ~1 kWh (over 16-20 hours) My local cost is $0.082/kWh off-peak, $0.113 mid-peak, and $0.17/kWh at on-peak times. Add some delivery costs and usual hydro bill shenanigans, and you end up with a cycle cost in pocket change. 3. *You do not need to buy filters.* The unit comes with pelletized activated carbon to reduce odours that is compost after its usefulness. This can be periodically replaced (or not) in the two *reusable* filters with bulk carbon from an aquarium store or other source, nothing that’s proprietary or that needs to be purchased from Pela directly. 4. I don’t live in an arboretum, but I am a plant guy, and yes, I do need that much dirt. LOL. I bought it primarily for enriching soil. *Output from the other modes can be composted, green binned, or trashed, but the point is that it’s at a significantly reduced volume (~25%)* and therefore more eco-friendly. 5. *The Lomi pods are a composting accelerator/soil booster that help in grow and approved modes.* They are not used for the express mode. Will be doing some tests without to see if there’s a difference, plus look for an alternative source of these, but they’re a small pill at about 45 cents. Completely agree with buying less stuff! I’ll see if this is a winner in time, but hoping this is a one-and-done purchase. Also noting that Lomi units are starting to appear in Indigo, Best Buy, and other brick and mortars, so maybe there will be less shipping that we think going forward! Cheers!

I debated getting mine from the cost. I finally got one for 400 dollars with all the trimmings. I am an apartment gardener so this this helps in a few ways. I don't have smelly garbage, because i put my eggshells, fruit scraps and left over veggies and the cook prep items right in my Lomi. I get get dirt that mixes well with fertilizer and I always have fresh dirt. If I am getting overwhelmed with dirt, I just put it outside my apt door for other neighbors to help themselves. Dirt is not a cheap item. So, I am helping the planet, reducing the methane gas and landfill, and being a good neighbor. My energy rating gives a good eco rating.

100% percent agree with your assessment. This product did inspire me to 'test' a similar idea using equipment that I already own, in this case, a Ninja. I collected the leftover veggies and coffee grounds and placed them inside the fancy 'blender' for less than 1 minute. This mush was definitely less than the original volume. I poured this onto my compost and it was a hit with the natural organism living in there. It will be converted to true compost in no time. So in short, I could replicate Lomi at a fraction of the cost without adding more unnecessary gadgets to the kitchen. Thanks for the honesty. Subscribed.

Your math is wrong. From their website, it uses 0.6 kWh - 1.0 kWh *per cycle* . A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a measure of *total* energy consumed, not a *rate* of energy use. Specifically, it is the energy equivalent to using 1000 watts (rate of energy use) for a single hour (duration). For example, a device which uses 1 kWh over the span of 10 hours has a rate of energy consumption of 100 Watts. Hopefully that clears things up.

I am so confused by this. Human presence has literally no bearing on how fast compost breaks down, so huh? My family has two containers for compost in a place only some of us visit on only the weekends. And yet it takes at most a year for the content of a container to fully break down. I'm pretty sure if yours takes longer, you might need to look into the local flora, double check what you toss in (stuff like kitchen towels, egg shells and bones break down extremely slowly) or maybe increase the warmth of the spot. Or break up the pile into two piles you switch between by year.

I initially thought this Lomi was a good idea. I bought in the crowdfunding stage, so it was (supposedly) cheaper(not cheap enough!)….. I didn’t see any videos to find out about it. I did not really research it(Duh!). I’m not so happy with it because 1)I have to keep buying filters and pills to make it work. 2) It doesn’t make dirt out of the green household waste. Like this video says, it grinds and dehydrates the contents. The “Grow” mode, in my opinion just partially processes so the end product can be completely composted outside in a compost pile or in the dirt outside…. which finally really does become compost. This process takes another 2 to 3 weeks. I got this info recently from a gardening website that critiqued the Lomi. 3) I am now concerned about the amount of electricity that it uses. The gardening website did say that it uses a small amount of electricity, I’ll see if that’s true when I look at my next statement! I will say that my kitchen garbage container does not stink nearly so much though. That’s a Plus, right?

Thank you for making this review. I’m trying to decide if I should get one. I have an environmental studies degree, and I feel like this product is not for everyone, especially if you own a home with enough space to do traditional composting/ live where you have access to a composting program. I live in a tiny apartment with a small patio that doesn’t even give me enough sunlight for most plants, let alone a composting bin. So I’m trying to decide if keeping organic material out of landfills is worth the extra electricity usage and carbon footprint from the creation of this product.
@eddieco
@eddieco 2 года назад
Glad you liked the video. For me, it seems silly to increase your carbon footprint while trying to be eco friendly.
@electric7487
@electric7487 2 года назад
The answer is probably right under your sink (if you use a municipal sewer). If you have a garbage disposal, turn it on and then throw your food waste in it. Garbage disposals can also process things like paper, and even peach, apricot, and cherry pits (yes, it will work, although it will be VERY noisy) if you really need to or want to.
@eddieco
@eddieco 2 года назад
@@electric7487 Not really. Garbage disposals dump all that good organic material into the sewer or septic system, where it then is wasted. While that IS a way to "get rid" of the items, it's not the least bit eco friendly. AND, garbage disposals can and will, with heavy use, over time, screw up a septic system.
@electric7487
@electric7487 2 года назад
@@eddieco Good point, but garbage disposals don't consume anywhere near as much electricity as a "rapid composter". This is because they don't have bulky, power-guzzling heating elements running for five hours straight, but instead run a motor for maybe 1 or 2 minutes at the longest. "Rapid composters" also dump the water in your food waste as humidity into your house's air and require you to constantly buy filters to avoid making your house smell like a landfill. Garbage disposals, on the other hand, move your food waste to your wastewater stacks, which is not only far more effective at getting rid of most of the stench, but also eliminates the need for you to buy filters. So although it may not be very eco-friendly, at least it's a lot _less unfriendly_ than Lomi _et al_ are. But you're right in that garbage disposals don't actually _reduce_ your carbon footprint. This is the entire reason why the first thing I tell people (mainly those scientifically illterate yahoos who try to defend these gimmicks) is that they should _reduce the amount of food waste that they're generating in the first place._ Because THAT is the bigger problem.
@eddieco

@@electric7487 Valid points, every one of them. Especially the last one about reducing the amount of food waste in the first place!
@educatetube
@educatetube 2 года назад
Exactly. You are correct. I think consumers need to be aware and not buy into the latest and greatest tech that will solve the world's problems. The best way to eliminate organic waste is to consume food immediately and buy just enough (pre-plan your meals). There is nothing wrong with a simple DIY organic decomposer (less than $50 to build). By the way, the smartphone only needs between 10Wh to 20Wh of power and the laptop only needs 60Wh to 80Wh of power to be fully charged. This Lomi machine is using too much energy and manufacturing it takes too many components (not very eco-friendly).

I don't. Composting requires heat, which occurs naturally when composting is done "the natural way". These composters simply speed up the process by basically breaking down the items into small pieces, and then heating them up to remove the water. They are basically a giant blender or emacerator, (not unlike a garbage disposal), mixed with a heating element. And they ALL use a LOT of energy. I know some people will put their compost in a 5 gallon bucket, and then bring that when full to a community garden, and put into their compost pile. You could just blend up your food scraps and put it in an oven or dehydrator to get the same kind of results if that’s what you want to do... but you’re just spending energy to make your waste weigh less, not really saving the environment from anything unless you otherwise had to drive it somewhere in your car every day or something crazy.

Get in touch with a local expert, find a community garden, ask around. I have been using the local climate to dehydrate banana peels, but they're still attractive to flies when they get wet again. Vermicomposting is the best understood method to use indoors.

just by looking at the design, it looks to be catered to a high end market that is "conscious" of the "environment'. The same crowd that will tell you that teslas are eco friendly- and they 100% arent. Thanks for the honest review and pointing out the fact that buying and rebuying products is supported by gas consumption through delivery, plastics manufacturing etc. Hopefully more people see this and not guilt themselves into "just doing it". P.s. throwing food waste in the blender/ food processer is essentially the same thing.

1. I live in Canada and 95% of the energy is from Hydro which is eco friendly. ( and so does a lot of cities in the America) 2. the filter that it uses are carbon and you can dump it at your garden and soil and it is eco friendly 3. yes for the 2 modes u have to dump the waste to the bin but it is shrined 80% less in volume 4. the amount of time and energy used to transport waste to the landfill is not eco friendly is it should be accounted for as you are talking about eco friendly 5. the bags that came with the device are composable by Lomi itself

Thank you for this!! I was honestly considering it because of where I live. We used to have a monthly subscription with a small business that picked up our composted goods weekly. And it was working okay for our circumstances; It quickly became odd to see food in the trash bin. But that all changed when we moved. I'm still looking for a way to compost considering where we live and I was seriously considering Lomi.

If it used microwave oven heating technology it might be somewhat “efficient” as in not take so long to do what it does and since it’s not edible food the output wouldn’t be too dangerous... but then the device itself would be way more expensive and a bit of a hazard itself.

I'd like to add that Lomi is not a composter but an imposter because it does not compost but rather it dehydrates food scraps and grinds it. So the final product is not compost and can't be compared to compost beacause it does not have any nutricious value for plants or microorganisms to fix soil structure. A total waste of time, money and energy :(

Wow! I didn't even consider the energy usage. Maybe Lomi and others like this are a good fit if you have an outdoor garden, though I'd have to look into it more. The energy usage is a concern and it sounds like it would almost need to come with solar panels to make up for it's energy use, crazy! I also became suspicious when I saw it had a subscription plan associated with it. Thanks for the video.

This would be a great review except for your understanding of the electricity usage is wrong. They have calculated that one cycle will use about 1 kilowatt total energy use. Your math is based on one kilowatt per hour which is a lot more comparable to charging an electric vehicle at home off of your wall outlet or running the microwave. The review is very misleading as it is focused on electricity usage and no actual test are being conducted to see how much is actually being used, for example no watt meter was used.

So hopefully they do better next gen.

I find it interesting that this man is going to explain how this unit is not eco friendly when he doesn't have all the facts. Such and the cost of running a cycle. How much does it cost to run for 5, 6 or 8 hours? It is eco friendly with regards to not putting out methane gas. It is eco friendly with the conversion of trash into dirt. Large volume to small output. It is eco friendly compared to the energy efficiency of a washer/dryer, oven, or refrigerator and air conditioners.

There are also many bad reviews stating even that function doesn’t work properly, the machine would get stuck and break. Just throw the garbage…in a garbage bag and call it a day. And if you have the means and time then do a proper real compost in your backyard that uses zero energy and where the bacteria etc… break down the food.

This review is very misleading. I own a Lomi, it works great. It uses far less energy than this reviewer indicates. Yes, you can put the end product in the trash and that makes some sense because Lomi reduces the volume by 75% or more. Yes, the filter material (activated carbon) needs to be replaced periodically (every 3 to 6 months). This filter material, along with the compost from the Lomi can be put in (and is beneficial to) your garden soil. If you are like me, do not have the space for an actual compost pile, do not like the smell of a compost pile and hate throwing food waste in the trash, you may like owning a Lomi.

First of all the treatment of the food waste in the Lomi is to help reduce the amount of methane being produced in the landfills. Second, you don’t run it daily, you make it sound you will be composting 24/7. I have not noticed an increase in my electric bill. Third it does not require bags. And the filter is activated charcoal. Lastly, treating my food waste to store between bi-weekly organic pick up is so much more convenient/pleasant then holding onto rotting, smelling, garbage. PS: the bag is compostable!!

So instead of producing methane in a landfill it is produced in the municipal compost that it goes to. The only way to avoid it producing that methane (which could be captured and used as fuel) is to burn it, going directly to CO2, which is considered to be a lesser GHG.

CO2 lasts 300 to 1000 years in the atmosphere. Methane last around 12 years in the atmosphere. CO2 is a much worse greenhouse gas due to time in the atmosphere. Methane though is a powerful greenhouse gas but not that long lasting. Unless you have Solar and or wind for all your electricity it makes no sense for these reasons and all the reasons in the video. Average electricity mix is well over 50% carbon polluting sources i.e. coal and natural gas. Compost outside and regularly stirring the pile very little methane is released. People need to consume less. If you live in an apartment bring your gardening friend your compost.
@redsquirrelftw
@redsquirrelftw Год назад
So this is basically a glorified compost, seems you'd be better off just setting something up outside. If you want to speed up the composting process you can probably embed a rocket mass heater in it or something and burn a small batch of wood in it once in a while. Also dumb that it has consumables that are disposable, kinda defeats the entire purpose to me. Even if you used solar power to run it, it's still not eco friendly compared to a regular compost.

It’s not a horrible product and i personally use one and the “plastic” bag is compostable by the way but i see you didn’t know that. It’s similar to an electric car and if your house runs on fossil fuels then it si defeating the purpose of an electric car and its only eco friendly if your house runs on renewable energy.
@SchwaAlien
@SchwaAlien 2 года назад
By this logic anything run in a house with renewable energy would be considered eco friendly despite how wasteful it actually is. Technically I have renewable hydroelectric energy, so my baseboard heaters are “eco friendly” but still pretty bloody expensive to run, so we burn the renewable resource wood for heat which is not nearly as expensive and very natural, local and eco friendly since natural decomposing wood creates methane which is supposed to be worse than the CO2 and water burning it produces. I’d rather not make the smoke pollution but that’s where inflated energy prices are going to push people in reality.
@pattycarljackson
@pattycarljackson 2 года назад
@@SchwaAlien No it’s pretty different. A Tesla is definitely more eco friendly then a gas powered car but it doesn’t mean it’s the most eco friendly option but currently it is for most people. You’re reaching a little bit there pal and trying to make a point that doesn’t make sense. We all know gas powered cars and things that are dependent on fossil fuels are not environmentally friendly but an electric car is better. Everything on this earth that humans use creates waste we need to find better ways of transportation and making products that create less waste and have less dependency on fossil fuels but I assume you don’t quite understand that.

This is not a good review. You complain that they compare the lomi to the stove which you claim isn't a good comparison because the stove uses a large amount of energy. But then go ahead and compare the lomi to an LED light bulb? Please tell me how that is a fair comparison? Furthermore, you say it wastes to much energy 1000 kw an hour. In my state that amounts to a little over 15 cents an hour, which I really do not think is a lot. You than complain about how you are eventually going to run out of plants to put the fertilizer in. If your a gardener you definitely won't. And even if your not a gardener you can throw the fertilizer on grass. Now even if you did run out of places to fertilize you say what is the point if your just throwing it away. Well I'll tell you 1 the economy mode is much quicker saving energy and 2 even though it is going into the garbage it has already been broken down, therfore it won't be releasing the harmful methane and other chemical compounds into our atmosphere increasing global warming. Instead those harmful gases are absorbed by the charcoal(the disposable filter you complain about) which you can also just throw in the garden to be safely absorbed into the earth and used by your plants. Overall I think this review is misguided at best. I personally love my lomi, and I find your arguments to be weak.

@allwayne
@allwayne 2 года назад
you're obviously not an engineer because you've got your units completely mixed up. the device uses between 600 watt hours and 1,000 watt hours per cycle. it does not use 1000 Watts of power. so when you're comparing it to a light bulb you're not comparing it correctly. when a cycle takes 20 hours and it uses 600 watt hours that means it's using 30 Watts of power at any given time. if it's using one kilowatt hour or 1000 watt hours per cycle and a cycle takes 20 hours that means it's using 50 watts of power. A watt hour is consumption a watt is power. your video would have been more compelling if you had your data correct, but unfortunately because you had your units incorrect the scale of the environmental impact from electricity use is vastly over exaggerated. personally, I suggest you reshoot the video with correct data figures and use real emissions data rather than leave this video up when your data is completely bogus.
