It constantly boggles my mind that you can turn just about any corner in London and find something interesting, how historically and nationally important monuments are just sitting, waiting to be noticed. A whole day could be spent learning about the previous occupants of a random street, or the amazing events that happened in a building on the corner.

His voice is more commanding, for lack of a better term. Like a teacher from yesteryear. As in, you hear it and it makes you pay attention. It's safer. The other digitised version is too placid. As in, it's asking you if you want to but you don't have to.

I love the graffiti in TOWER OF LONDON from KINGS,ROYALS, MILITARY LEADERS, DUKES,LORDS and QUEENS in the JAIL CELLS.They are so elaborately done and very well written.But what else can you waiting in a squalid smelly cell 24hrs a day while waiting to be Hung,Drawn and Quartered??

Great video. If you ever do a follow up to this one, you could include the National Covid Memorial Wall on the South Bank. Partly it's the freshness of the tragedy, but I find it really moving. And the way it just goes on and on and on brings home the scale of the loss. Or did you include it in another video? I think you might have.

Another brilliant tour with Jessica! Honestly, I could listen all day. So informative, compassionate and concise. London, and Britain in general, is full of the strange and macabre. It makes you wonder what kind of human being could think that someone screaming as they burned alive for the crime of believing in something different than you (which based on their religion would be punished after death anyways) is wholesome. Thank you Jessica for elucidating the matter of "drawing" in executions. I have listened to many history videos which confuse the dragging behind horses for drawing, as you mentioned. You'd think someone claiming to be a historian would know better. When I was a little girl, my parents killed their own chickens for eating, and when my dad removed the innards he said he was "drawing" the chicken, a process tiny me found fascinating. So I have always known the term.

I must say I'm English and I have been to London 2 times , I enjoyed it , but was too much for this country boy :) Also I always prefer hearing a foreigner (no offence intended) talk about the history of our country , as the enthusiasm and joy in sharing such facts makes me happy and seems more concise:)

I was born and raised in South London, yet it’s strange how little you take in as resident. It’s too easy just to walk by and never think about just how much gruesome and bizarre hidden history you miss. Shame really, but we over look it because Londoners just never get the time to think about that awful things that happened three.

Another bit of trivia, the phrase 'On the wagon' meaning 'Not drinking alcohol' comes from the trip by prisoners from Newgate Prison to the Tyburn gallows. The condemned had their last drink and then had to get on the wagon to continue their journey to execution, it was in effect their last drink.

Re: Beheadings: From what I've read, a big issue with regard to beheadings is that the axe is not a tool that's designed to be used in this fashion. This is why many beheadings (such as Margaret Pole's) tended to be rather...messy...affairs.

Perfect video for a raining evening here. I learned about Bentham in university (many years ago, since I'm old) and I've wanted to see his remains -- such an interesting character! My dad told me once that my great grandma on his mom's side came from England and her maiden name was Tudor. Can't say for certain how true that is, just from the stories my grandma told him. I've wanted to visit the country at some point and explore my possible history. And maybe apologize to all the wives Henry beheaded... Almost feels like something I need to do. But I'm a history nerd as it is and have always been fascinated with ancient and not so ancient history. Mainly foreign. So these videos help me scratch that itch I may never be able to scratch myself.

I remember having to stand to one side in the mid 1980s as Jeremy was wheeled to the committee room to cast his deciding vote. The old case was much nicer though and the head was in a box under the chair at that point. The story in our day was that sometime in the ?20s, UCL students stole King's College's stuffed gorilla during rag week and they retaliated by stealing Jeremy's head and playing football with it in Oxford Street. It was on a printed card next to the case.

16:26 This statue is the official centre of London. Road signs saying eg LONDON 20 miles (captial cities are capitalised) mean that's the distance to this corner of Trafalgar Square.

I think we become accustomed to hearing about these gruesome executions. I find it horrifying that a queen/king could order such an execution and people would picnic at the event.

I don’t know if this will be of interest but William Wallace wasn’t the only famous person on this list who was born in Scotland. Charles I was born in Dunfermline Palace in 1600 just a few years before his father would unite the Scottish and English crowns due to Elizabeth I dying without issue. Which makes him the last monarch to be born in Scotland, though he didn’t know until his brother Henry’s death just days before Charles’ twelfth birthday, that it was his fate to become king.

Speaking of Hanging, Salem Witch trial, they found, ( took a while) few hundred years), that the people of (Salem-Danvers), were found to be hung at Proctor's Ridge, right behind Walgreen's 😮 , in someone's backyard, Yup, my Ancestor, was Rebecca Nurse😢, this town is about a hour from where I live, the Strange thing is the judge who signed her death warrant, is buried, in Dorchester, and I passed his grave every day going to School, not knowing it, fast forward 1967, I moved to Stoughton Ma town named after him ( William Stoughton)! @@TheMuseumGuide I think the point being made is that you used a hard ‘a’ more associated with the US dish of Salisbury steak, rather than the softer ‘a’ that is typically used in the UK for the same place name.

@@TheMuseumGuide it’s an easy mistake to make, especially when you may be more used to hearing a pronunciation in one way or even if you are expecting the emphasis to be in a different place (a personal peeve of mine being the mispronunciation of Lomond in Loch Lomond) but essentially the the Sal in Salisbury rhymes with all, so it’s kind of s-all-s-bury with the emphasis on the salis part.
