In 1927, pioneering filmmaker Claude Friese-Greene
produced "The Open Road", a journey through Britain
filmed with a specially-devised colour film process.
This remarkable film has been computer enhanced by
the British Film Institute.
This video is an attempt to recreate the London scenes
from the film as they appear in 2010.
The original film may be seen at • The Open Road - London...

Yes, even though people were poor in those days, they still had respect for their country, sadly, not very many people have respect, not only for our country, but for authority as well. As President Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country.” That statement should be drummed into our young at school.

I really enjoyed the archive footage. It had a lovely mellow tone to it as if every day was sunny. In contrast, the modern stuff was stark, cold, and naked. It was as if the camera had also captured a more human scale world, the buildings were too. Whereas, the modern stuff is overpowering and impersonal. It's facinating to see virtually EVERYONE wearing hats--rich or poor. and have made an effort to dress properly, unlike us scruffy denim clad gits. Great music too.

I love watching these old films but here I find myself looking back not at 1927 but to 2010. There seems to be more of a contrast between London in 2020 and 2010. London under this dystopian regime is now lifeless and forlorn and It upsets me remembering how wonderful and free our lives were up until 6 months ago. We need to stop this nonsense before we go back not to 1927 but to 1984.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, but I still think that there was a silent movie comedy element, which made the quick walking fashionably funny for a while, so that people sort of expected it. I would much rather watch something at about the correct speed(including variations) than speeded up to hide the individual frames.
@patcalutube
@patcalutube 12 лет назад
@navsports That was my original intention but, in practice, proved impossible. For example, have you tried standing in the middle of the road opposite the Houses of Parliament? :) Another big problem was the trees which were not there in 1927 and prevented me from getting exact views from the exact standing positions. I do not live in the UK so it required several trips to find the locations and I was working from memory while filming. It was a labour of love. Glad you liked it.

Greenwich is hardly recognisable now. London seems full of scruffy people today. But buildings are much cleaner. Life was slower then. The Docks and their jobs have gone. People “wandered” across London Bridge. Vehicles and their fumes didn’t infest every square centimetre of breathing space. As men passed the Cenotaph, they doffed their hats. Trafalgar Square was dirty but not over busy. Green Park entrance busy with traffic, now busy with traffic bollards. People just sitting on benches. Marble Arch gates removed. Peter Pan and his boating lake cleaned. Soho quiet by day!! Rotten Row had horsemen and horses. But the Strand looks unchanged - except for London Eye of course!

I really like the way the speed of the film in 1927 has been made normal...not speeded up like Keystone Cops. It gives a whole different reality to the film. All old footage too often has this silly look....people walking stupidly fast...why did they do that? Was it for comedy films in the first place?
@anthonyturton8091
@anthonyturton8091 2 года назад
the speeded up effect in non comedy films. is because the film was hand cranked ,or sometimes driven by clockwork. if the operator was tired or the clockwork was run down, the film recorded slowly when played back at the faster correct speed was fast and jerky

What a great film, whilst the past looks romantic and today looks shiny and cold, i think that is purely the type and quality of the film. Note the comment about hats and the apparent absence of women, whilst i am sorry for those who had to take the top deck of the bus in the rain ! Whilst many of the lovely old buildings have been lost (the blitz, 1960's planners), many were grubby and poorly maintained. Also note the traffic then was clearly a law unto itself and a danger to everyone !
