Nelson's Trafalgar coat, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich - Nelson's Trafalgar uniform when he was shot, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Let's go and view Vice-admiral's undress coat worn by Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) at the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson's Trafalgar uniform (Nelson's Trafalgar coat) is displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (29 September 1758 - 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. He was noted for his inspirational leadership, superb grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics, all of which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm in the unsuccessful attempt to conquer Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the sight in one eye in Corsica. He was shot and killed during his final victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Back to the uniform now; there is a bullet hole on the left shoulder, close to the epaulette. The damage to the epaulette itself is also apparent. The coat is of blue wool cloth with a stand-up collar and button-back lapels. On the left side, Nelson's four orders of chilvary - Knight of the Bath, Order of the Crescent, Order of Ferdinand & Merit and Order of St Joachim - are sewn to the front of the coat and over the edge of the lapel so that it could not be unbuttoned. The sleeves terminate in an extremely narrow round cuff with two rows of gold distinction lace and three flag officers buttons. The left sleeve is lined with black silk twill, but the right is lined with the same fabric only as far as the elbow. At the end of the right sleeve is a small black silk loop which would have secured the sleeve to a lapel button. The tails and breast are lined with white silk twill and the shoulders are quilted with running stitch.

I saw this uniform when I visited. I was alone in that room too. Just stunning to me, the bullet hole is so clear and the jacket is rather small, I guess he was a smaller guy. I just stood there for a while, unbelievable to be in the presence of such history. That happens a lot in London, but this was special.

Us as humans have all got bigger.. If you vist old towns that are like 200 years old there's all houses with low doors just because people were smaller. Even in world war 1 people were smallest. If you ever get your hands on a word war 1 helmet you'll see what I mean
@holydiver73

Although people were smaller 200 years ago, Nelson was small even for his day, he stood at only 5 foot 5 inches.

As a midshipman in 1775, he became ill in the East Indies with what was probably malaria. he suffered repeated attacks throughout his career. He was described to be more muscular before contracting the illness, after which his body became more slight and he never fully recovered. That only added to what others mentioned of the average human being a lot smaller in the past and him being shorter then average even then.

Great video Vic My Father served in the Royal Navy so I thought I knew all about Lord Nelson. I have visited his tomb at St Paul's but I had no idea his uniform was on display at Greenwich. At the end of his life he had lost the sight in one eye, most of his right arm and numerous other wounds during his service. A true hero. It's hard to imagine the horrors of a naval battle in this period. I have subscribed.

You can see on his epaulet several tassles missing this is because a midshipman named George Augustus Westphal who was hit in the head was laid down next to Nelson and they used Nelsons rolled up Jacket as a make shift pillow , The blood from his head wound soaked into the tassles so much so that when the coat was removed they had to cut some of the tassles off,. George kept one of them for good luck and it must have worked because he went on to serve in many more actions becoming a commander and flag captain. He retired in 1834 and died in 1875 as the longest surviving crew member on HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar . He died at the age of 90 living in Hove East sussex and is buried in the family vault in St Andrews church yard in Hove.

@SNP Alba forever I’m guessing your very biased but Cochran was one of the greatest admirals but his battles where not as impressive as Nelson and Nelson saved the nation and secured the unparalleled naval supremacy of Britain for a century also I think it overstating the achievements of Cochran I mean he did play a major part in the securing the independence of Chile but no way did it by himself also Nelson is just more iconic and the wasn’t much of a cover up of his achievements I mean he was a great hero in his day

Great video but as an author on Nelson, i would just like to add a few comments that people might find interesting. Firstly this uniform was an undress admirals uniform so yes it wasnt the most lavish example of a coat that nelson could have worn. However Nelson was advised by several of his captains and even the victorys surgeon william beatty against wearing the jacket as they felt that the awards and badges would pinpoint nelson as a target. He refused to change to a planer coat before the battle. Regarding the large blood stains on the breeches, jacket and stockings of the uniform. This was almost certainly not nelsons blood but infact the blood of nelsons secretary john scott who was decapiated during the opening salvos of the battle. He died on the exact same spot where nelson fell when he was shot, hence the large blood stains. Nelsons uniform, shirts, breeches etc were removed immediately upon entering the orlop deck of the victory so the surgeon could access the wound easier. I saw some comment kismet below. Nelson never said this and this has never been recorded. He did say kiss me hardy as he needed affection from his good friend as he was dying. Kismet story was invented by the victorians as they were embarrassed by the kiss me scenario. Kismet is the turkish word for fate, but was not uttered by nelson at trafalgar.

This is the equivalent of the Shroud of Turin to Great Britain. It's a relic of unimaginable importance. Nelson's victory at Trafalgar directly thwarted an invasion of Britain by Napoleon. The battle also ushered in 'Pax Britannica', an era of British glory spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries in which Britain had total dominance of the seas and reigned over a quarter of the worlds landmass. Nelson is surpassed only by Winston Churchill as the greatest Briton of all time.

Many thanks Vic, I'd never seen Nelsons top coat before, that is fascinating, as well as very sad. I was at school with a direct descendant of Horatio Nelson. Some five of my ancestors who were born after his death bore his Christian name out of respect. None were in the Royal Navy but one, Horatio Henry Steel was a Surgeon Major in the British Army, part of his service was in Afghanistan. He died in the 1920s.

One of the most fascinating exhibits in that Museum.. The Guardian recently published an article saying that Nelson was pro-slavery (which I did not know)...
@daneelolivaw602
@daneelolivaw602 10 месяцев назад
@@VicStefanu A bit late i know, but i feel i should answer the pro slavery thing. The only evidence to support this is a forged altered copy of a letter that Nelson had written, and it appeared after his death. And of course it would be in the Guardian, where else. If he was Pro slavery, why in 1799 did he secure the release of 24 black slaves that were being held in a Portuguese ship.? If he was Pro Slavery why did he support the RN in taking on any escaped slave, signing them on to the ships company, and paying them wages, and refusing to hand them back to the slave owners.? If he was Pro Slavery, why in 1802 when it was proposed that slaves should be replaced by free, paid chinese workers did he support it?. If he was Pro slavery why did Nelson rescue a black Hiatian General, Joseph Chretien and his black servant from the French, they asked if they could serve with Nelson, and Nelson recommended to the Admiralty that they be paid until they could be discharged and granted passage to Jamaica, they were both Paid and granted passage. The Generals mission was to end slavery A fact of which Nelson was well aware.? If he was Pro slavery why did he have a free, paid, black servant called Price, Nelson said of him "he was a good a man that ever lived" he suggested to Emma that she invite the elderly Price to live with them.? I wonder if the Guardian article mentioned any of those facts?. i bet it didn't.

+John Foreman "England"? You mean Britain. By only referring to England you miss out the other countries which were part of Britain in 1805 (and still are) - Scotland and Wales. There were Scottish and Welsh sailors in Nelson's fleet, as well as those from England (and a few other nations as well, it happens). Nelson was a Vice-Admiral in the British Navy.There was no such navy as the "English Navy". (Yes, I know the signal he sent to the Fleet before the Battle was "England expects..." etc., but he was wrong.).

Very interesting video of Admiral NELSON'S coat when he died in Trafalgar (1805), GREENWICH (LONDON). Vice-admiral's undress coat worn by Nelson (1758-1805) at the Battle of Trafalgar. It is displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. He was shot and killed during his final victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. the uniform now; there is a bullet hole on the left shoulder, close to the epaulette. Very interesting & informative video.

He saved England and probably the world from Napoleon's madness. And he didnt have to fill fields with unmarked graves of young men to do it. They were the tough and the brave and they got lucky if they earned enough for a comfortable middle class life. And the depridation and suffering he endured was beyond belief. Good video. I've seen a lot of blooded old uniforms (and a few scalps...) in museums. Very poor choice of combat apparel. I think if I was in charge at Trafalgar I'd dress like a mess mate. Snipers always aim at the officers. In WWII a lot of US Army infantry officers carried M-1 rifles like the lowest ranks, removed their insignia, so they weren't showing bars on their collars and helmet, with nothing in their hands. NATO doctrine is 'decapitate command and control' which has always been the case in war (except maybe in the middle ages when it was, kill all those other guys, but save the guys in fancy armor for the ransom they'll bring.) I'm pretty cynical about a lot of the British hero stuff, but Nelson executed an efficient, devastating and decisive battle plan. Mike Tyson famously said, 'Everybody's got a plan. Until they get punched.' Nelson's plan worked even when the French and Spanish punched and punched first.

Yes, you're right that makes no sense. What he said was "... according to the staff here at the museum he was not wearing the most conspicuous or obvious uniform..." Therefore, he's saying the staff don't know what they're talking about since the coat we see with the bullet hole is indeed conspicuous and obvious.

@toff358
@toff358 6 лет назад

@lorddaver1935
@lorddaver1935 6 лет назад
+skybluelemonade Wrong. Nelson never achieved the rank of full Admiral. He was promoted to Vice-Admiral of the White on 23 April 1804. On the same date, Collingwood was promoted Vice-Admiral of the Blue (a slightly lower rank of V-Admiral). It pays to check your facts, not to make assumptions...If you don't know about the sub-division of the various ranks of Admiral (Rear, Vice and full) into Blue, White and Red squadrons in the Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries, then you don't know as much as you apparently think you do.
@lorddaver1935
@lorddaver1935 6 лет назад
You, and Wikipedia, are both correct. Nelson was promoted to a Vice-Admiral of the White on 23 April 1804. He never made full Admiral.
@AML2000
@AML2000 4 года назад
Promotion among the admiral ranks in the Royal Navy was by seniority and somewhat automatic as older admirals died. The promotions continued even after retirement. Up to captain, promotion was primarily by merit which is why Nelson made captain by 20. He was not any way near the most senior admiral, thus his lower rank.

No, the bullet did NOT go through his chest. It entered his left shoulder in a downwards trajectory (he was shot from above, remember) and travelled down to enter his spine, causing the fatal injury that killed him two hours later. The bullet hole in the shoulder of the jacket is clearly visible.

You've seen too many Hollywood films. It wasn't a large wound. The blood oozed into the inside of his jacket and his shirt. What killed him was that the bullet entered, and broke, his spine. Even then, it took him two hours to die.
