A bus vid now from 1998 of London Buses in Romford. Plenty of Titans and various other vehicle types with tendered operators (Grey Green, First Capital ect). I get a feeling it was quite cold when i filmed this but a nice, crisp day for filming. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Epic video and well taken for time! I remember Capital Citybus routes 348 & 349, both went to Lakeside but the 348 went via Hornchurch, while the 349 went via Harold Wood. Only the 348 was the only one out of the two routes to survive after being sold off to Eastern National on 07/2/99, but then was withdrawn the same day before coming back by May and replacing the withdrawn 351 between Romford and Lakeside, and continued to operate until I believe December 2001. I also remember the 351, 370, 373, 251, and even the 324 for a while as well between 1999-2000 and 2001-2002

Ah, yes. Seven Kings & Hornchurch garage's. Seven Kings was the last all RT allocated garage, until it was rebuilt it couldn't get anything larger in the place. Once it was the RTs disappeared quickly. And Hornchurch was the first all OPO garage, and the first to get Titans allocated as well......

Yes, strange to think it is now a south London route...... along with the 62, the 87 was the last to run RTs. Booked for one on a Saturday although they would cover for RMs whenever needed.

I remember Romford from back in the early 1970s, a bus trip on the 86s to visit Romford Market on an RT or Routemaster if an Upton Park bus. The first part of the ring road hadn't long been open back then and the place was a mixture of new SMS buses and classic RT & RM types with the odd Eastern National Bristol FLF!

Nice video demonstrating how buses were in Romford back in 1998 fast forward 21 years later to 2019 and Romford has changed alot (the town centre not largely) but the buses definitely have changed alot like eg no alx400s and all step entrance buses but one thing that hasn't changed is stagecoach Londons dominance over Romford they have lost a few routes in that area in recent years but stagecoach still operate a majority of services there and gaining another route the 128 currently owned by arriva London
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

In my childhood days in the area it was mainly RT and RM buses. My favourite was green RT's on route 370 to Tilbury as Romford was the only place apart from Green Line services l saw them. Saturday's always meant a ride to the town on an RT on route 87.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
I grew up with RTs in the 70s, luckily East London held onto them until the end. Seven Kings garage was too small for anything bigger until it was rebuilt so Ilford was full of RTs on routes 86, 129, 139, 148, 150 & 193. Once the rebuild was finished the DMS's soon flooded in!

I moved out of Romford officially the year before this. 87 and 175 were my local routes, but my bus back from college was 248. I could have taken the 252 but it used to go “round the houses”! There was on RM that ran on the 252 for about a month in the early 90s by Ensign. Managed to catch it once!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
The 252 originally ended at Elm Park in Morecambe Close just off South End Road. It was extended 'round the houses' when the Airfield estate was built up and Airfield Way connected South End Road to Suttons Lane near Hornchurch St Georges Hospital (i went there once one Sunday on an SMS on route 66B to see where St Georges Hospital actually was!). I will have to upload my film taken of Titans & Nationals in Upminster & Hornchurch on the last day of Hornchurch Garage, taken way back in 1988!

Absolutely love this video....this is the Romford that I knew a proper mix match of liveries and bus types yet still dominated by the Leyland Titan. Shame you didn't concentrate on the Thamesway National a little longer but still excellent work. Believe it or not but I spotted at least 3 buses that are in preservation T4,T6 and CCB National 2 750.

Another reason why I think this is 98 is that Ensignbus took over routes 324 & 348 which saw a return of the blue and silver livery to Romford and their collection of Metrobuses from all over the place certainly made things more interesting.
@AndreiTupolev
@AndreiTupolev 5 лет назад
That was definitely the most interesting time, London bus wise, up to the end of the 90s. First and Arriva branding was just beginning to appear, but plenty of old liveries still around. I'd forgotten all about that shortlived Arriva (or was it Cowie?) livery on that Metrobus at 5:55. And Grey-Green Volvo Citybus 131? Must have been a refugee from the 24
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
Yes, the Volvos were a transfer from the 24s and i have seen quite a few Metros with the yellow bands at the end although not always the Arriva circle as well.

The 87 was an East London route for over 100 years until TfL wanted to use the number in south London to get rid of suffix'd routes (the 77A), they extended the 5 and abolished the 87. The second from last RT operated route as well.....
@ace-paidinfull5240
@ace-paidinfull5240 4 года назад
Soi Buakhao ok.. interesting to know. I thought it was just one of those ridiculously long routes originally from south london like most routes that come from a particular place. Like for example one of the buses i drive (14) always went putney, but also went as far as hackney at its opposite end
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
@@ace-paidinfull5240 I know what you are getting at, lots of routes have been cut in half. The 14s never made Hackney (that was the 22, also a Putney route) but Hornsey Rise, just north of Finsbury Park. Still a fair old run though! I once worked the 185 back in 2002/03. A fairly long route, and very busy but it was a nice change from my normal east London routes i used to drive.....

My favourite memories of romford are when it was a green bus "mecca" with such services from all over essex, and a green bus ",mecca" probably just as much as what Croydon and Kingston was, but with both eastern national and London country running in, being especially busy on market days From memory, I can remember the services as:- Bishops stortford/harlow/epping (339 "express"/500 "Express"/501 "express"/712 green line)- various service changes in the 1980s saw route numbers change Chelmsford/basildon/southend>brentwood 2/251/351/400/403(?)/451/511/551 I think the 403 was an eastern national to basildon Grays/tilbury 370/371/373(?) And the 2/251/400/551 onward runs to walthamstow and London Not to forget the independents thames weald from various destinations in Kent, and boardabus 8 from waltham cross And then, with deregulation, it seemed that anything could turn up, I seem to recall capital citybus even had ex-west Midlands metrobuses running with (whoever they were beforehand) Now, there are just red buses, and very little variety Even the market, which passengers primarily came for, has been decimated, but that's another story
