Time for another pointless journey! In this episode I travel from the mainline station at London Liverpool Street to the underground Elizabeth Line platforms, exclusively by train!

Wonderfully pointless yet fun journey! BTW, the ‘FROM UNDER THE GLACIER’ thing is one of the three Darren Almond art pieces, in this case "Time Line", that was commissioned for the station. As for the meaning, as per the TFL Art site: "‘FROM UNDER THE GLACIER’ reminds us of a much slower passage of time: how our journey through this network of tunnels has literally cut through geological time itself." So now you know :)
@NickBadley

Ealing Broadway Elizabeth line to Ealing Broadway Tube station will take an entertainingly long time depending on the route you take. One such example route: Ealing (Liz) to Paddington (Liz), Paddington (Praed Street) to Earl’s Court (district), Earl’s Court (Piccadilly) to Acton Town (or Ealing Common), and finally Ealing Broadway (District).

Actually this method is useful for escaping the extra fare due to exiting a national rail platform. For example, if you want to go to Canada Water (Zone 2) from Cheshunt (Zone 8), you could tap out at Liverpool Street and change between National Rail and London Underground at Liverpool Street directly, charging you £4.4. However, if you do this "pointless journey", you wouldn't need to tap out at Liverpool Street, and TfL would only charge you £3.6, as your journey would be regarded as "not via Zone 1".
@JoshLStuff
@JoshLStuff 26 дней назад
To be fair, with that particular example its probably about 10mins quicker to get on a direct train to Stratford from Cheshunt and also, dont you need to exit the national rail platforms at Liv St from cheshunt to get to the other half of platforms towards Stratford?

Here's another pointless journey in London: From Waterloo low-level to Waterloo mainline: 1. Take the Jubilee Line from Waterloo (low level) to Westminster (5 mins) 2. Take the River Bus from Westminster Pier to North Greenwich Pier (45 mins) 3. Take the Emirates Airline across the river to Royal Docks (20 mins) 4. Take the DLR from Royal Victoria to Stratford (10-15 mins) 5. Take the London Overground from Stratford to Richmond via Gospel Oak (1 hour) 6. Richmond to Waterloo (mainline) on Southwestern Trains (15-20 mins) Total journey time c. 3 hours but you get to see an awful lot of London and use 6 different modes of public transport!

If you're ever in Glasgow again, there's potential for pointless railway journeys there and it's not easy to pick one, as you have Glasgow Central, Glasgow Central (low level), Glasgow Queen Street, and Glasgow Queen Street (low level) all in rather close proximity to one another. From The Glossary magazine: Almond’s other two pieces - ‘Shadow Line’ and ‘Time Line’ - are based around the tradition of naming early British locomotives with cast bronze nameplates, though these ones bear the poetic phrases ‘Reflect from your shadow’ and ‘From under the glacier’. All three abstract works, say Crossrail, serve to remind the passenger about the mechanics of time and place, and the daily rhythm of the station: descent, ascent, arrival and departure.
