I hope you enjoy this cab ride from London Paddington to Hereford filmed in UltraHD during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown of summer 2020 by a friend who is a driver.
We journey for a total of 150 miles starting out in England’s capital and slowly head into more rural areas as we pass through the famous University City of Oxford, then through the charming scenery of the Cotswolds before hitting major civilisation again in the form of Worcester. Then it’s out into and through the Malvern Hills passing Great Malvern and Ledbury before reaching our destination of Hereford.
We resisted the urge to get the recordings done at the widest possible focal length, as, despite the gains in peripheral vision, you get a very false impression of speed and perspective. This detracts from the realism. The focal length chosen attempts to give the best compromise of a realistic view of what the driver sees together with a decent amount of peripheral scenery. You won’t see any ‘barrel distortion’ i.e. bending buildings here!
Throughout the trip, captions give information on the route - past, present and future - in a way that is hopefully informative without being too over the top and intrusive:
• Bottom right of the screen is the maximum permitted speed at any given location for the train.
• Bottom left of the screen in orange captions is the name of the line we are on, together with information on where the signalling is controlled from, mode of traction the train is using, and lineside gradients of 1:100 or more.
• At the top of the screen, station details are in red captions.
• Major junctions, selected level crossings and other significant infrastructure are in green captions.
• Diverging and converging routes, as well as other lines we pass over or underneath are in dark blue captions.
• Other information, such as historical details, possible future enhancements and other general information the viewer will hopefully find useful, are in light blue captions.
• Small inset video, at various points on the route, gives ‘flashback’ footage to a previous layout, or views from the side window of the train.
The footage was recorded on several different days using an unmonitored camera.
It is for entertainment only, is not an official GWR or Network Rail publication, and should not be used for route learning.

If they picked up all the discarded sections of old rails laying about dumped and weighed them in for scrap they could probably knock £20 off all the ticket prices. 😉

Ha ha! You noticed that too. I’m just horrified by the amount of what looks like scrap metal on the lineside. There is simply too much of it. As well as shrubbery that hasn’t been cutback/eradicated. Some of it looking like it’s going to damage so much masonry it’ll use up Network Rails CP Budget unnecessarily.

@@stevies.1975 I’ve thought that about the scrap metal laying around since I was very young looking out the window on train journeys. Always been loads left there after work has been done. It seems they never take any back with them.

Be better off using the track to double the single line sections. It's dumb how a major line has only a single track - obvious bottlenecks into Oxford and Worcester and for goodness sake, if you are going to make a new station redouble the track!

What an excellent video. Living in Worcestershire I've travelled this line countless times, so it's fascinating to see it from this perspective, and with your informative notes. The Cotswold to Hereford section is surely one of the most scenic runs in the country.

Same here - a fantastic video of a line I’ve travelled many times. I love the flashback footage and the side views! The subtitles are really interesting but sometimes the font colour makes them difficult to read.

Oh how the line has changed. I traveled this route on a regular basis from 1970 until the last time in 1995. The cluttered view of the overhead power lines is most noticeable but also the lineside development. Brave new world. Thanks for sharing

Yes. I used regularly to travel to Windsor and Oxford before 1985, and one joy of the WR was the uncluttered overhead.

I live near Hayes and Harlington and did this journey once back in the early 90s. We sat in one of the front facing seats where you could look out of the front window and get a similar view to this video. Thanks for uploading this. Brilliant

Thanks so much for posting this! It's brilliant! I travelled the section of line between Malvern Link and Worcester Foregate Street daily from 1972 to 1979 on my way to school. Many of us rushed to sit at the front of the DMU as the driver would not normally pull the blind down and so we could share the driver's view. I can still picture it all like the back of my hand. Living in Richmond now, I still occasionally ride the line from Reading to Malvern Link. It's incredible how the switch between electric and diesel modes on the Hitachi trains is so smooth.

Thank you for posting this splendid and very informative video. My heart always lifts when the Malvern Hills come into sight, for example at 2:02:00. Pity the bright sun makes it impossible to appreciate the delightful brightly-painted wrought-iron capitals in the columns at Great Malvern station!

Now,, imagine doing ot in the dark !! Still using Miles and Chains. Lonely bloody job. My Dad was a driver for 20+years, started as ,cleaner, fireman, then driver. Shrewsbury to Paddington, overnight stop at Old Oak, before return working to Salop. Also, overnight Shrewsbury to Newton Abbott. Cracking quality video. Thanks for sharing. 😁👍

As a longtime resident of Worcester I was fascinated by that section. I was once allowed to pull off the levers in Evesham and Henwick boxes. Appalled that they have not reinstalled double track between Evesham and Norton Junction. Great video

J'ai visionné avec grand plaisir cette vidéo, c'est un beau travail 👍. Les chemins de fer anglais ont un style tout à fait particulier, mêlant modernité (rames automotrices bi-mode récentes) et aspect vintage ( signaux mécaniques, architecture des gares), qui est plaisant. Great video but it sparks a thought. One of the criticisms that came out of both the Southall and Labroke Grove crashes was how cluttered the sight lines to signals were around Paddington due to all the clutter of OLE, bridges, wires, gantries nd overhead cables etc. Seeing this video really brings that home. I know all the signals are relayed in the cab desks now but all the same, respect to the drivers!

The majority of Paddington area signals were lowered and re-angled to improve sighting in line with tighter standards in the aftermath of the Ladbroke collision. What drivers see today see is as uncluttered as it can be, given that all the most complex track layouts are in busy urban areas with many potential distractions. The train protection system installed in cabs is only an aid to drivers, and their responsibility to look out for and then obey each lineside signal. They certainly do deserve respect for a job that's more difficult than it looks!

I suppose it's not part of the caption writer's brief to mention poetry but the video at 1:16:06 is the site of Adlestrop Station, made famous by the poet Edward Thomas. His train stopped there "unwontedly" on 24th June 1914, although it may in fact have been a scheduled stop. "The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform ..." One of the station's original associated buildings can be seen on the left. The main station building was on the right, as was a siding and large goods shed. The station was closed on 3rd January 1966.

Absolutely brilliant video. I live just outside Evesham in South Littleton and have been on this route many times from the days of steam in the 60s to present day. Not been on the trip in one go but from Evesham to Paddington and Evesham to Hereford. Facinating to see what the driver sees as opposed to just what passengers see from the side. Extremely well produced and I like the realism of what you see and speed of train. Beautiful route especially through Cotswolds and on to Hereford. Thankyou...we can hear the train from our house at Littleon Crossing so will be reminded of what the driver sees every time I hear it. Just imagine if that type of photograph was available in the 60s with full steam running from Paddington to Hereford! I remember as a boy going to Honeybourne Station and watching the Castle class coming down from Campden bank in full steam as it did not always stop at Honeybourne! It was awesome!

Fabulous video ! Having travelled on this route over 500 times in 30 years (GMV to PAD and back pre covid). This gave me a different and welcoming perspective. Also loved the way the journey time is much shorter than my normal 2 hours and 35 mins. Poetic licence I suppose. Keep up the good work and thank you for a delightful couple of hours.

Many thanks for reminding me of my days on the footplate at OOC in the 70's and 80's. I knew this route like the back of my hand as far as Wolvercote. It has to be said that there have been a few changes since..! Especially leaving Paddington (the down main was once the up eng. and carraige), and Reading, what an improuvement, we used to nickname it 'Stopall Junction'..! I now live in France where fly-over and dive-under junctions are relatively common. The only eek if the catenary installed beyond Hayes, what an eyesore for a moment I thought someone had set up a scrapyard adjacent to the line, why they never chose something a little more discreet similar to that on the ECML beggars belief. I look forward to your next video.

I kept seeing the "Not for route learning" text in several cabview videos, eventually I asked around what that meant. I have to say, I am amazed at British trian drivers, that they have to memorize the entire route and such! I find this amazing as where I live, drivers can be dispatched to anywhere in the country, and they don't learn routes, we have everything that is needed to know displayed with signs and signals.

In switzerland you have a table with every speed that's allowed and only curve speeds are shown with signs. You need to remember where the speed changes are and where the signals are. I think (when i remember right) you need to drive with another driver at least 3 times per direction to be allowed to drive it. It's about safety and speed, like there are signals i heard, when the pre-signal shows warning, and you're a freight train, you need to brake with full force to stop on time.

My great grand parents would have made this journey in the 1880's. My grand mother was born in Hereford after the family left London. I enjoyed the trip very much and the quality is excellent. Thank you.

Enjoying videos from Vancouver. Went to UK June 1990 & got a 2 week BritRailPass 1st class & traveled all over. The timetable back then was over 500 pages. Had High Tea on the Cornish Riviera to Penzance. Went all the way to Thurso in Scotland. There was even a train to Tilbury dockside where I got on the 'Royal Princess' cruise ship that was christened by Princess Diana (no taxi required). It's a shame they got rid of British Rail. Also I flew to London on PanAm also long gone. Cheers,

Hello, British Rail returns next year as Great British Railways, and the old logo also returns. This means integrated timetables and ticketing and overall control of track and other infrastructure. Franchising continues but on different terms. I suspect these will eventually disappear and all operators will return to state control. Re-nationalisation by stealth, I'm sure many will be happy with this..

Superb video. The "Old Worse and Worse" has been a favourite line since I travelled it in the 1980's when it was in a sorry state, and I've got a number of well-watched videos of the "Cathedrals Express" steam era of the line. Amazed by the changes around Oxford station, which I last visited in its 1960's "contemporary" state ( I usually travel there by road nowadays). One small quibble, the excellently informative captions at the the top of the screen are up for too short a time , and blue against a blue sky background, so especially in Part 1 when there was so much else going on, I had to "stop the train" to read them fully. Thanks for your trouble in editing and posting.

I have viewed the line at different points many times over the years but only travelled the line from Worcester to Honeybourne and that was a long time ago. I used to watch trains disappearing into the tunnel after Malvern Wells in steam days.

Miss Marple took the 4:50 from Paddington. That was when she saw a murder in an adjacent train. What Miss Marple was doing up so early, i don’t know, but you know, old people love to get up before sunrise to get their tea and coffee. I know, from every cruise ship i was ever on.
