All of us want non-stop supply of electricity and a range of products from food items to furniture to cars to non-stop internet etc. All those things have a carbon footprint and hence pollution. It is as simple as that.

London has had a reputation for a century for two as being one of the most polluted cities (The London Smog Tragedy of 1952 that killed thousands of people over a couple of days is one example) It's sad to hear it's still one of the worst cities for air quality. At times the air is as polluted as LA or Mexico City according to some studies.... very alarming

A variety of things could be done to help improve the air quality in London. Travelling around by bus instead of a car will help. One bus could potentially keep about 30+ cars off the road at any one time.

I lived in London for 7 years, the air always felt toxic. I had medical issues with my eyes for the last few years that I lived there. I didn't link it to polution at the time, but after moving to Sweden my eyes have been fine. My case might be anecdotal but since health issues have been linked to polution like this they really need to get their finger out and ban all combustion engine vehicles really soon! Corruption will likely hold it back tho :(

My grandmother was born in 1887 in London and suffered from bronchitis. In her 60s the family moved in the countryside and her health got better. She lived till the age of 92.

Pardon me if I sound smug! I live on 6+ acres in rural South Carolina and surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodland. Greenery is so abundant that even a 'tree-hugger' like me has to occasionally cut branches or sickly trees. Most of the land is untouched on my property. Air is FRESH! And I am not too far from the amenities of life if/when needed. You make your bed and live in that! Move!

Maddeningly, there is a solution which will reduce the amount of cars on the road, shorten many journey times and completely emission free. But it's (still) illegal! E-scooters should be legalised.

As someone who spent my early childhood in England with occasional trips to London, it's so sad to know that this European city is now in the same sad polluted state as New Delhi, Bangalore, and here in Chiang Mai, Thailand (although here in Thailand is mostly for a different reason, burning). However, I don't like the emphasis on using this problem as a way to force people to buy newer vehicles or new types of engines, as well as excuses for more and more authoritarian-type controls and reducing people's freedom. People are always trying to do this now, use environmental issues as a way to force people to buy or adopt newer technologies or products that they may not like or that may work less reliably than the older products and technologies. Trying to use the same thing, whether a vehicle or any other item, is basically an environmental idea because it saves from contributing to the world's garbage - and a vehicle is a large item! Same thing happening with those LED and fluorescent lights that cause cancer and stress, do not show work areas in fine detail like the older lights do, and are far less aesthetically beautiful than the older incandescent lights. Yet they are being pushed by governments as GREEN but really just so lighting companies and "GREEN" investors can make a profit. I think other solutions besides forcing people to replace older vehicles are better here. Like 1) use more public transport, electric vehicles, car pooling. 2) planting trees, suggested in other comments. 3) what about factories, aren't they also responsible? Maybe factories can adopt more environmental technologies to control their polluting output. Always, it seems that ordinary people who use everyday products are being blamed for environmental problems when it is large companies that are really responsible for them!

I used to walk like 20-30 minutes along the main hi-way of West Kensington Central London to Hospital where i work as a frontliner but then when i started to notice that i get short of breath and my Oxygen saturation went down from 100% to 95% on room air then that's when I started to take the bus instead thinking that the reason i desaturated was because of the polluted air i inhaled when i was walking.

Been complaining about idling vehicles increasing pollution on my London walks (it is illegal to do this but nobody follows it up) & the general pollution is horrific in London. To replace the ICE engines in vehicles with EV engines can be a solution. At 79 I am very aware of the risk to children And older people or/and all those with health problems.

cycling has boomed in London since the pandemic like in many other cities. If London was serious about it like in Holland it could reduce alot of small car journeys within the city. Weather is basically the same, streets are wider if anything, and its pretty flat so perfect conditions

Here in the East of England like Cambridge. motorists are objecting congestion charges by there local Council and air pollution is pretty bad round here, we need to stop people from taking local journeys and get people to use public transport instead.

The plants are good idea but those air purifiers often are spray-painted and have vocs if they are going to have air purifiers need to make sure that they're stainless steel hundred percent and no vocs no spray paint a lot of schools have products inside the school that have vocs in them

In England and in London the AQI (air quality index) stays between 20 to 60 throughout the year and these westerners are so concerned about air pollution 😂😂😂😂😂😂. Over here in northern India and especially in New Delhi it says between 300 to 600 for 5 months a year and on some days even close to 800 to 900.Its 444 today in New Delhi.

Out of date London has already greatly extended its' Ultra Low Emission zone. The problem of diesel particulate emisions was not helped by vehicles from Daimler Benz and VAG being programmed to cheat emission tests
