London tower block with 'non-compliant cladding' goes up in flames

A huge blaze engulfed a block of flats in Dagenham with “known fire safety issues” on Monday.
More than 100 people have been evacuated and two taken to hospital after a fire broke out in the building in east London.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they are carrying out a “significant search and rescue operation” after being called to the blaze on Freshwater Road at 2.44am on Monday.
Forty engines and around 225 firefighters have responded to the fire which engulfed the whole mixed-use commercial and residential building, including scaffolding surrounding the property and the roof, the LFB added.
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe told the BBC that the building “has a number of fire safety issues known to London Fire Brigade”.
Work had been under way to remove “non-compliant cladding” from the building, called Spectrum House, this month.
At around 7.30am, the fire service said the blaze was producing heavy smoke and advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

Was the block empty, like totally empty? People may have been moved out for the refurbishment, but if that's the case just think of their things that have gone up in smoke. I doubt any of them would have fire insurance. If a fund is started for them, give to it. Update: there were residents, it looks like they've all been moved out, but that also means that they've lost everything. The building was being renovated to replace the flammable cladding, which is a horrible irony. As I said, if there's a fund, give to it.

Fires safety assessments got shifted to the private sector instead of the public sector. They should be administered by a national body. Instead private companies compete to get building companies to pay them to get their cladding approved for use. Thus there is an incentive for the private companies to skimp on the testing to save money (they do calculations on a computer simulation instead of actually lighting it on fire to see how fast it burns) and there is an incentive to be generous to what they will approve because a company who is strict will not get chosen for the tests so will get less business. It's an insane system that show never have been allowed to happen.
@jordan8168

Maybe the cladding issue shouldve been addressed and not left down to the tenants to pay when they didnt order it to be installed........ Every building the world over was built by the cheapest bidder on everything and anything involved in the project, from the architecture, elevators, electric, drywall, steel. Even building codes are "least best" mainly because of material manufacturers. Make the engineered wood association mad, or the roofing tile manufacturers ..... Go ahead, the better way might cost 50 extra bucks.

Have we learnt nothing from grenfell. We need to start prosecuting people who build/install things that arent saftey compliant. Otherwise our infrastructure will be no better than a third world country.
