Die London Underground ist die älteste U-Bahn der Welt und besitzt die größte Netzlänge europäischer U-Bahnen. Sie erschließt neben der City of London besonders nördlich der Themse weite Teile der britischen Hauptstadt London sowie einige angrenzende Gebiete.
Der erste Streckenabschnitt der Metropolitan Railway (die heutige Metropolitan Line) wurde am 10. Januar 1863 als unterirdische, mit Dampflokomotiven befahrene Eisenbahn eröffnet. Obwohl von der Metropolitan Railway die weltweit häufigste Bezeichnung für eine U-Bahn - Metro - abgeleitet wurde, wich dieser Begriff im britischen Englisch bereits Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts der Bezeichnung Underground. In der Umgangssprache der Londoner wird die U-Bahn Tube (englisch für „Röhre“) genannt.
Insgesammt gibt es 11 Linien und 270 Stationen.
