This is our first time watching reaction to the movie Lone Survivor (2013). In 2005 Afghanistan, Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matthew "Axe" Axelson (Ben Foster) deploy on a mission of surveillance and to take out Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Though spotted by goatherds, Luttrell and his team decide not to kill them. But one of the Afghans alerts a group of Taliban fighters to the invaders, and a terrible battle ensues, in which the SEALs find themselves hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned.

Factual: About 5 yrs ago, the monument to Lt. Michael Murphy, (an engraved circular black granite stone), which was located in a prominent spot in his home town of Ronkonkoma, Long Island, New York was desecrated and smashed by unknown persons. The story immediately went viral… the local media, the local residents and the internet mobilized. Parents questioned their kids, neighbors talked to their neighbors and the police did their thing… within less than 24 hrs an individual was arrested for the disgusting crime. A huge go fund me was established and a local granite company replaced the monument free of charge. There is now a museum located nearby honoring Lt. Murphy and all his brethren… Bottom line, in this country, DO NOT disrespect our fallen heroes!!! RIP Lt Michael Murphy, the men of Operation Red Wings and all that have fought and died for what we are able to enjoy! ❤️ 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Interesting Fact: John Wick was loosely inspired on the true events of Marcus Luttrell and his puppy Dasy. He received a Yellow Labrador puppy to help him recover from the war. The puppy was named Dasy, an acronym of the names of his fellow SEALs - the ones that didn't survive the battle. Thugs killed Dasy and he armed up and chased them across several counties in Texas. Police apprehended the thugs but Marcus allegedly said “I spared them because I’ve killed enough people already.”

As a U.S. Marine, this movie is the one that has hit me the hardest. I have the utmost respect for SEALs and when I joined, it was to support and defend the Constitution and the brothers to left and right of me. I Always ugly cry when I watch this film, no matter how many times I've seen it because even if our fight was in vain, every one of my brothers fought for the same ideal. Peace and happiness throughout the world.

Obviously I've never been to war so I can't pretend like I know what I would do in this situation, but what do you think of the scene before they started fighting where they let those 3 go. Do you think that was the correct decision in the situation that they were in? Do you think it was a stupid mistake not eliminating them so they could of avoided that situation and ended up being able to attack from a better position?

The simple fact that Murphy is using the SAT phone tells them that planned communications are down and that there is a situation that has placed them in jeopardy, to the point that Murphy is saying, "COME AND GET US, NOW!"

The actual call used to be on YT. When he is all done he says, "thank you." The phone never turns off and latter you can hear him screaming frantically as he is being shot to death. Least we forget.

Some of Marcus' videos taken when he spoke to different groups are really good, talking about perseverance, etc. He was the team medic so knew how severe his own wounds were. The movie is close because Marcus was on-scene and helped with the training. Also when Peter Berg finally got him to agree to the movie, he told him to the effect "my guys died in this so if you #$^$ this up I'll kill you." Berg wasn't sure if he was serious or not, but took no chances. Marcus' brother was also a SEAL and always believed Marcus was alive. It took several days for Rangers to reach the site where the CH-47 went down the mountain and recover what they could.

His brother is his IDENTICAL twin. That's how he knew he was still alive. Supposedly when stuff like this happens, and one passes away or gets seriously injured, the other can feel it. It's pretty cool.

Marcus' "fuck it up and i'll kill you" line is great and all. However, it came during his and Berg's initial meeting. If you've read his book, its easy to see that Marcus eventually had to make a lot of compromises as to how the story was told. The movie does stay true to the core details, but a lot of the events and timelines have been heavily altered and bear only passing resemblance to the real story. In the end, Marcus was pleased with the final result. But like all good stories, it has to be so watered down for simple minds and general consumption that a lot of truly remarkable events are completely omitted or simplified to a point that they seem innocuous.

Saddest part to me is that the real thing was worse. You can tell in some clips Marcus feels guilty about Danny's death. When that happened, as Marcus turned, Danny caught a bullet to the head killing him, and i think the fall after that Marcus bit off some of his tongue. Super sad, their grit and determination in this is unreal.

Marcus now runs a podcast with his twin brother Morgan called the Team Never Quit Podcast. Its amazing to hear how much he has healed from this tragedy. In earlier interviews and public speaking events, you can tell he has a lot of guilt and sadness when talking about this event. Now when asked, while their is still sadness, the guilt isn't there. As much anyway. He talks about it a lot more freely now and actually uses his experience to help other GWOT Veterans heal from their trauma.

Went through BUDS winter of 2012 the year I graduated high school, my sophomore year i was as an overweight, Mexican, underspoken, underguided and unencouraged student. I retired from the navy last year after 11 years and now owe everything I have in life to the ethics and mindset of not breaking and calling quits the teams instowed in me.

Have this movie on DVD, in the special features one of the family members of the soldiers reads off how many gunshot wounds his son had and where they were. Surprisingly the son got shot way more than he did in this movie and was still going. Always surprises me when war movies that are based on a true story tone down what the men did or the injuries they had while doing it to seem believable and people think that they embellished it, then you find out that the reality was much worse than the movie version.

Haven't seen that interview, but I know Marcus was shot 27 times, broke his back in 4 places as well as his pelvis. On the first fall he bit his tongue in half and swallowed it. On the second he smashed his nose and broke both eye sockets. He also crawled for 2 days before the villager's found him. In an interview he talks about how he couldn't walk cause his back was broke, so what he would do is grab a rock and reach Infront of him as far as he could and draw a line in the dirt. Then he'd crawl till his feet crossed it, and if he was still alive at that point do it again. He did that for 7 miles. up mountains and then fall off the other side. He is Mr. Never Quit. His podcast is called Team Never Quit.

And in real life, he got a bullet to the side of his head. It blew the entire front of his skull off. They didn’t play that in the film and then they didn’t play the part where he actually died. The villagers found his body against that tree put another mag in the gun, they ended up cutting his throat

I think it's important to mention, as though to offer some kind of balm to the tragic deaths of those men. Is that afterwards, several platoons of the 75th Army Rangers, went onto the mountain and managed to recover all the bodies of the fallen SEALS. They did not leave them on that mountain.

Don't know if you know about this or not, but another story from those Rangers. One of the pilots that was killed was married. When the Rangers found this out they spent days combing through the wreckage looking for one extremally small and, to most people, probably insignificant item at the request of his wife. His wedding ring. They found it and then those men personally delivered it to that pilots wife. They could of went home day's earlier, but they stayed, at that crash site13000 foot above sea level, living on MRE's, doing a mindless task of searching through the charred remains of a CH46 Chinook Helicopter, an aircraft that has thousands of small metal parts looking for a weeding ring for his wife.

Here's the thing, after Marcus recovered, he re-deployed. After all that, he went back into combat. I read the book way back in 2008 and the movie is fairly accurate to the timeline of true events. If I remember correctly, Luttrell was hidden and protected by the Pashtun villagers for around two weeks. The villager who went to tell the Americans that they had Marcus was a very old man who walked for miles through the mountains to their base with nothing but the sandals on his feet and a walking stick. If anyone wants to know more about this incredible story, read Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell and research Operation Red Wings. This story has to be preserved and remembered.

The old man was not part of the actual story unfortunately, but reality is all the more incredible. During his 2 weeks in recovery, Marcus was able to create a sort of beacon that transmitted a radio frequency specific to what was on the americans radar. The americans picked up the signal, but were not sure of its origin. With the suspicion/possibility that it was Marcus, the groups of Army Rangers that were already searching for him and the others in the mountains began to close in on the signals location (potentially being days away with no feasible landing zones near the village). At this point the Taliban had caught wind to an american being held at the village and were on their way. Because of this, a group of the villagers put the immobilized Marcus onto a stretcher and proceeded to carry him miles through the mountains toward the US base where somewhere along the way they ran into the search partying Rangers.

Marcus Luttrell also has an identical twin brother (Morgan) who is also a SEAL. Morgan is now a Congressman. He represents Texas 8th Congressional district.

I’m so far under impressed with his brother in Congress. I’m a big Trump supporter since 2019, I was a very liberal Democrat, so what drew me into the party was the populist/economic nationalist platform of Steve Bannon and “Drain The Swamp” which was one of my biggest issues as a Democrat, the revolving door of Washington and government corruption, and the rogue intelligence apparatus and War Inc., Morgan Lutrell seems like a status quo establishment Republican, so not my cup of tea.

These are our secret seal teams, six being the best, that do these missions to protect this country at all costs. God bless all our past, present and future operators. 16:57 in the book, Marcus says that after that first fall he broke both legs, cracked a few ribs, broke his back, and partially bit his tongue off. And still kept going.

After seeing the vid of them strippin Mike Murphys body, I realized these people do not have respect for any form of human life. Such disrespect to the man’s body 😢 you see a lot too 😔 things like Mike murphys last facial reaction (you know he fought until his last breath) and his charred remains. You can actually hear Mike Murphy screaming and hollering in such desperation for Marcus right before they kill him too. 😣😢 💔 Respect to these warriors.

I was 10 years old when my father went to Vietnam. Back then we would exchange letters and cassette tapes. Once we did get e phone call, there was no email, no digital cameras, no cell phones. Only information we got was from the evening news. Only thing we could do was pray that a military officer would not show up in the driveway.

Some people say, well this was exaggerated. Luttrell said it was worse than the film shows. And if you watch the first ever recorded (as in drone footage) Medal of Honor and listen to what happened to him. This film is absolutely realistic.

It’s amazing how unbelievable the combat scene was. You think Hollywood dramatization. But in fact it cuts back on how horrible it was. Like Marcus having to crawl for, I believe the book says 7 miles before being found at the creek.

26:08 Murph’s “thank you, sir” is real. The real Mike Murphy said that in the rescue call. Shot to absolute hell, broken, bruised, literally dying, and he still thanks the TOC officer for his help. Very truly “distinguishing himself by conspicuous gallantry and valor at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action against an armed enemy.” And exhibiting the words engraved on the Medal of Honor he received for these actions, “Unwavering devotion. Conspicuous gallantry. Extraordinary heroism.”

You should watch videos of Marcus tell the more in depth story of what happened and what he went through. The movie does not do it justice honestly. IRL the Afghan man Gulab went with Marcus on the helicopter when rescued. Today Gulab and his family have immigrated to the US and live in Texas as well.

He did not go with him on the bird. That would of been a breach of security. He stayed in Afghanistan for several more years. He has since, with the help of Marcus and several of his contacts, immigrated to the US and does live in Texas.

I read the book when I was a teenager and I believe the battle itself was even more gruesome in the book. Like there were actually 4 or 5 cliff falls; Marcus describing how he could hear Murphy (who was awarded the Medal of Honor) screaming for help while he was dying after he made the call but he was too paralyzed/shocked to do anything about it; and Marcus was actually not able to walk and was crawling through the wilderness for several days before he encountered Gulab. The only big “Hollywood-ization” of the movie I think would be the final battle in the village. That didn’t actually happen, although the part of Gulab refusing to give him to the Taliban due to their traditions is true. Other than that, veterans have said this movie nails the feeling of actually being surrounded by the Taliban on their home turf and being pinned down in fire fights.

Ive read Lone Survivor and Axe fought, after being separated for the final time from Marcus, for a very long time after being KIA. All men were a true testament to grit and Marcus credits his team for his survival!

The guy wearing the beanie who spilled the coffee and asked Patton (new guy) to clean it up is the real Marcus Luttrell. After the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down, Army Rangers were deployed along with Air Force Pararescuemen to search the crash site and recover the bodies. They later went on to rescue Marcus Luttrell in the village.

I recently told another channel that watched this.. if you liked the movie then read the book because the movie only tells a small fraction of the whole story.. Marcus told the director when making the movie that “if you dishonor my brothers in anyway, I’ll kill you.” This story is insane and we have a statue of Danny Dietz here in Littleton, CO cause he’s from here

I'm glad I read the book before this came out but it didn't prepare me for seeing it live action. Lived not too far from Marcus between his place and Waco. His upbringing was like a lot of ours. There's a reason Texans make up over a third of the Marine Corps and a good portion of the other services. Ooh-rah, squids. Don't let your meat loaf.

Lt Michael Murphy was known for being an insane fit sailor. No one could beat him at anything. He was even awarded the Medal of Honor. The one thing that every military member knows, is that in order to stop a SEAL, you have to kill them, because they never stop until their mission is complete. Another 5 star movie about SEAL’s is “Act of Valor.” They even use real SEAL’s.

Marcus lives just down the road from where I lived until I moved last year. I never met him but I know people who have and who have done work for him on his property and I’ve heard nothing but good things. He’s apparently a really chill, down to earth guy. Well, as long as you don’t shoot and kill his therapy dog. You do that and he may go John Wick on you. Also, some people actually went and got the guy who saved and helped Marcus, and his family, and got them out of Afghanistan and brought them to the US so that they wouldn’t be killed for what they did. He and his family were attacked and ambushed many times after they helped Marcus, and I think a couple of their family members were killed, but eventually some folks were able to get them out and bring them here. Last I heard they were living about an hour or so from where I live now. Many of the Afghans who helped or worked with our soldiers weren’t as lucky, and many were killed or left behind in Afghanistan unfortunately. Many of them got completely screwed over by our government, but I don’t think anyone would be surprised to learn that.

The Apache helicopter is an essential part of that air attachment, for it has cameras for low light and heat vision capabilities to detect enemy troops on the ground where the gunners in the Chinooks only have their eyesight

Marcus Luttrell did a podcast with Joe Rogan awhile back talking about the whole experience. Some elements of the film are taking liberties. For example Axe was already dead, and Marcus was unconcious by the time the Chinooks arrived for the rescue... and they were on the other side of the mountain. There was no line of sight. Also, one thing that really blows my mind is the actor playing Axe, Ben Foster... You've seen him in something recently. The Thomas Jane Punisher. He plays the neighbor guy with all the piercings. What a transformation. After I learned that, I rewatched Lone Survivor again, and there is one shot where his younger persona creeps out for just a moment. Axe crawls up to the other guys and says "That sucks." I was like, that really is him, holy crap.

Fun fact: The person who shoots down the helicopter was 12 years old in real life. This was confirmed in the book and by multiple witnesses in the other chopper.

The Rangers who recovered the bodies and Marcus Luttrell spoke on a documentary series called "The Warfighters". They had to recover all the bodies from the downed Chinook as well as Mike, Danny and Axe...definitely worth checking out.

First time seeing your reaction and I love how you guys are really emotionally connected to the actual events. You must read the book..they actually went through way more difficult stuff and despite the unfortunate loss they held it down and eliminated a bunch of bad guys , but the US Army no matter the branch are all trained to deal with these kinds and types of heavy and complicated extreme situations.. have you guys seen BLACK HAWK DOWN. ??.. keep the reactions coming.

I remember when all this started and people saying "Kill them all!" But this film shows us the bravery of our military personnel and also that there are good people on all sides of a conflict.
