Dark Horse Comics' Gallery Edition of Lone Wolf and Cub, the classic manga from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, is a marvelous showcase of the tremendous craft and composition of the series. By presenting over 150 pages of original art reproduced in the original size and 'colours', this large edition celebrates the making of a comics masterpiece. This video features a close look at this book, along with a commentary and analysis on how not just fans but newcomers would be well served by the almost-unspoken thesis here: this was no accident; panel by panel over 8000 pages, Koike and Gojima crafted a lyrical, sorrowful, and cinematic comics epic. This includes a major-spoiler-filled look at the final chapter of this saga, reproduced in the Gallery Edition in its entirety.

I think I mentioned previously that Lone Wolf & Cub is by far my favorite manga, and I did not have to think twice about pre-ordering this Gallery Edition when it was first announced. I followed Dark Horse's other Koike & Kojima translations (Samurai Executioner and Path of the Assassin) and considering that Path of the Assassin was printed to be read right to left as originally conceived, I was really disappointed when Dark Horse released the omnibus editions of the first two series still in the left to right mirrored format. But the fact that Dark Horse translated both of those series in their entirety put them way above any of the other American publishers in my opinion. Over the years, I have accumulated some of the original Japanese editions (partial Bunko set from 1979, full Bunko set from 1995, single volume of the 14 volume King series), none of which features any colored pages. I wonder if the stories featured the color pages when they were initially published in the magazine "Manga Action".
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 года назад
Your collection sounds sublime! And thanks so much for that wide view on the absence of the colours. It would be great to find out if Manga Action did, in fact, have the ocassional watercolours. At the same time, I know there are processes of saturating colours in a photo before converting it to black and white, because it affects the grey tones differently, so maybe there's also something about how muted colours like this may show up in B&W? Just wild speculation on my part! 😊

Sorry for the inordinate delay, everyone! As I mentioned on the Community page, I tried a lot of new things in this video, which meant a much longer, trial-and-error-filled edit. I hope you enjoy this slightly different approach to looking at some special editions and I'd love to know of any feedback, reviews, suggestions and recommendations you may have! Cheers!

Huge fan of the Lone Wolf and Cub-series (and it WAS the first manga I ever read) and I guess watching this video convinced me to add yet another of these Gallery Editions to my collection. Now I actually even wonder what took me so long! :) They're great books (a little expensive of course but oh so worth it). The other ones I own and love are: Batman by Sam Keith, Batman by Kelley Jones, Superman/Batman by Michael Turner, League of Extraordiary Gentlemen by Kevin O'Neil and Hellboy in Hell by Mike Mignola... All come highly recommended! Thanks for another great video!

How I wish I could get my hands on the Hellboy, LoEG Gallery Editions in particular; they're all unfortunately quite hard to find, especially here in India. Maybe one day I'll get lucky on my travels! Let me know how you find the Lone Wolf GE!

@@ftloc Sorry to hear about the scarce availability of these books in India. In any case, I wish you the best of luck on those travels! :) Personally, I like the LoEG volume better than the Hellboy one. I love Mignola of course but his art style doesn't really benefit that much from a bigger size, in my opinion. However, the LoEG one is pure bliss for the opposite reason! In the meantime I also received my copy of the Lone Wolf GE... and it's a keeper, for sure! I especially noticed a lot of "nuance" was lost in those small pocket books from Dark Horse... Anyway, I was wondering if we can expect a video on that "Demon" series from Jason Shiga? That seems like an interesting title I never heard about but from you. Love to hear your thoughts on that! Thanks!
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 года назад
@@born2beblue Oh I can just imagine the bliss of the LoEG GE! I would expect similar joys from a Top 10 GE if they ever made one! I'm glad you mentioned the nuance in the Lone Wolf GE, that's the one that has probably enhanced my appreciation of the original series the most. I definitely want to cover Shiga's Demon, actually all of Shiga. A Jason Shiga spotlight is what I should do and hopefully I'll get to it soon! Thanks so much for watching and commenting - I love it and appreciate it! 😁

@dukstuf
@dukstuf 4 года назад
@@ftloc Miyazaki's masterpiece, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is in many ways, the Yin to Goseki and Kazuo's Yang, Lone Wolf and Cub. It is light where the wolf is dark, it's protagonist is empathetic and full of life where Itto dwells in a dark place accompanied by demons- both comics are among the very best works of their kind. Miyazaki is the master of comics about strong young women, in my opinion.

Years ago I collected all the original English volumes of Lone Wolf & Cub. Unfortunately I sold them on to buy something else. @ftloc
@ftloc 4 года назад
Thank you! The interesting thing about the flipping is that it maintains the pacing and rythm, for the most. If I get one long panel and two short going right to left, it'll be the same flipped and going left to right. The things that become odd is being right- or left-handed, and action and sports stories could be particularly affected, I imagine. But it doesn't often matter. If people have difficulty reading right to left, I guess I'd rather they read it flipped and enjoy the comic, rather than give up in confusion and frustration. Still, once I just got used to reading right to left, it's not that big a deal and I personally, would be fine with all translated manga to read in the original format.

@@ftloc True. It takes some adjusting but you get used to it fairly quickly. The margins are wasted? Just to make the book appear larger? Why were the westernized flip pages printed smaller you think?
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 года назад
The western-panels size puzzled me too. The only thing I could think of is that since those were scans/photocopies of re-designed and re-lettered copies, maybe the English pages were just that size? And depending on the quality of the copies, enlarging them may have broken up the images? Just guessing here. As for the margins, I believe they are proportionate to all other Gallery Editions, which show the entire art page as if pasted on to another , therefore larger, 'Gallery Edition' page. But I'll check and confirm that!

You talk about inspiring newcomers but the fact remains that it's almost impossible to get the entire run of LWAC and New LWAC because of deliberate nopreprinting, primarily by Dark Horse in the west. You can't even red New LWAC digitally. Unfortunately, this series will always be a fringe and known only to the hardcore Manga afficianados. Newcomers have no chance of experiencing this masterpice of a Manga because it simply cannot be found in book form.
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 года назад
Yeah, those omnibus reprints really fooled me into thinking that they were going to stick around this time but alas, I didn't even get to complete the whole saga myself this time around before many evaporated. I understand that there are a lot of volumes, and the added pressure of page count means things like digital/on-demand printing are not feasible here, but DH could have kept the first five in print for new readers I think, sporadically reprinting one or two of the others. Do you know if there were any rights issues that prevented that? Ah well. Luckily, I don't find it necessary to read every single issue in this series (barring the very end, naturally) and there's plenty that can really be appreciated and loved about this even with only one or two books (but the more the better!). Of course the ideal situation would always be the entire saga in continuous form, but unlike manga like Akira, Children of the Sea or even what I have heard of Berserk, the episodic/ adventures of a wanderer give it a timeless feel, allowing readers to come in at almost any point and enjoy the short stories and definitely the gorgeous artwork and storytelling techniques on display. So I'd still always recommend seek out whatever they can get their hands on, whatever one finds will always make you happy, I feel.
