Fantastic!... You got me back into playing guitar. Great lesson. I'm practicing on my 1966 Harmony Broadway.

I got back to this and pulled out my telecaster this time... Such innovative ideas the ideas for the time that this came out.. Grady looks like he was having A-blast in the video. Big smile, just having lots of fun.

My first electric in the early 1960s had flat wounds - we all thought that all electrics used flats in this days?

Ade that’s Stella work absolutely fantastic So how do you know Grady played flat wounds and are Ernie balls flat wounds?👍👍👍 Also is this classed as Ionian mode or is this not modal at all and uses the rockabilly scale with added #b’s ?
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 3 года назад
Thanks Michael!! I wouldn’t think of this one as modal, the minor pentatonic over the major thing is a law unto itself! That’s the shortest answer possible 😝

Also, the flat wounds - when I first started playing in sun rising I was using an Es175 with flat wounds, and when you hit the lower strings hard through a cranked clean amp they make a certain thud, it’s very distinctive - I’m hearing the same thing in this recording. Could be wrong, but my guy says it’s right! And my ears too!

What are your favorite settings on the Memphis Sun? I find I can’t use any of the dials past noon on any setting without it getting washed out or over modulated.

I think I covered this in a video about Scotty Moore stuff but I’ll have to find it! I also had a friend/fan send me their communication from Robert keeley which was most helpful. Ill see if I can find that too!

Interesting that Grady Martin played guitar on this track - I always thought it was Paul Burlinson? Very interesting mode?
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 2 года назад
Yes definitely Grady Martin, very much minor blues with some kooky extra notes like the natural sixth (Dorian inspired etc) hope you’re enjoying the lesson, it’s a big one!

Speaking of flat wounds....back in the late 60’s and very early 70’s the only strings I’d ever played on the white falcon were flat wounds. Smooth and silky and it came with flat wound strings when my mom bought it for me used in 1966. . . $400. Frankly, that was an excellent flat wound assumption.

Such a great story Al, your mum was a special person. I still recall you telling that story - was she a waitress? You mentioned she wouldn’t have been earning much, such a big commitment to make for her son! Just amazing! Thanks Al, do you hear flat wounds?

@@AdrianWhyte Yes.... I had been using a guitar we bought at a department store . It was hard to plat but who knew any better I was 12 when I'd gotten it. When I stopped in the guitar store with her to buy strings, this was on the display wall and she told me to try it out. My first NON-BUZZING barre chords were play that moment.

@@knuckle47 that story still just blows my mind, knowing how hard that must have made things, but also how it would have set you on the path that, as all paths do, leads to here! Really cool when you think about it!
