On this trip into the mountains I return to the colonial property once belonging to a loyalist during the American Revolution to do some metal detecting and discovery what history lays beneath the ground.

As Vermont declared itself an independent republic in 1777 and remained so until it's admission as the 14th US state in 1791, it was more tolerant of loyalists than the 13 original colonies.

Some of my 'loyalists' American ancestors roamed these parts when dealing with the more 'revolting' Americans : ) The 'Haldiman Papers', available on line and free for downloading, contain a great deal of information about Vermont events and residents of the time. Well worth a look if a non-Hollywood history has an interest for an individual.

You're so right about slopes. I often find things on them, and the 6 feet leading up to them. Every time you can't help but imagine someone sitting down and resting 200+ years ago. Times change, but when you peel back our technology, and slow down. We find ourselves stopping, and taking a break on that same slope our ancestors once sat upon. Great video and great finds Brad!

I am impressed how you figure. Out items you find. The Jaw harp something may have overlook. Grew up with antiques the pegged tables , Secretary, and Cabinets. Had some of those coins to play at myGrandmothers. How the land claims back is what gets me excited as well. Brad thank you once again sharing your knowledge with us. You are keeping History alive for many now and in the future. Amazed in many schools the lack of History of Our Country is not taught much. Stay safe and glad you ate documenting this.

Most of the copper-sized coins ringing up in the high 50s and 60s are colonial counterfeits; I’m pretty sure that’s what you’ve got and it’s a super find. I love those.

I found this fasinating... My family landed in Boston in the late 1600's. Later generations moved to Vermont after the revolution and stayed there until the early 1800's then moved to Canada. So it's cool to hear about loyalists in the Vermont area... Cheers.

A lot of these items you find may not be dropped or lost, but the house they were left in has just rotted away over the top of them. Like in the first find, you dug through bricks and roof tiles or something to get that trinket. I find it fascinating to think that there may still be old timers alive today (who we will never find) who may have seen some of these sites 60 years ago and maybe back then there were still some posts poking out of the ground or last rotting remnants of buildings visible on the ground. I guess we'll never know, but I know in my short life of 40 years, there are gnarled old, soft boards and posts and things I remember seeing as a child while out wandering, which I took to be ruins or something at the time, which are mostly gone now.

(for now) So I watch these video's of GMMD - I bought the CD of the music, which is awesome ! but the main thing besides all the buttons, - finding all the early coins, has got me interested in these compared to the many years of being a Morgan silver dollar collector, Brad has found coins that I never knew about, like the nova constellation coin, the Ben Franklin coin and many others ! really cool stuff ! thanks Brad !

The loyalist buttons were a new one on me and two, at that! It occurred to me that a peroxide solution may give you an opportunity to identify your coppers. Using a microwave bowl, warm hydrogen peroxide in the microwave. it just needs to be warm. drop the coppers into the bowl and let soak. you will likely see a reaction almost immediately. occasionally remove the coins and rub gently with a cotton swab. this isn't an instant fix. it may take a day for you to get where you want to be. rinse well. rub the coin with whatever coin preservative you prefer. I like Blue Ribbon myself. Great adventure and eagle eye finding an almost completely erased homesite.
